Ahmedabad is one of the easiest big cities to reach Mahakal from. The daily Shanti Express leaves Ahmedabad Junction at 7:10 pm and halts at Ujjain at 3:45 am, so you are at the mandir gate as the Bhasma Aarti crowd is going in.
By road it is only about 400 km through Godhra, Dahod and Ratlam, and from September 2026 GSRTC runs its own AC bus from Gita Mandir. This guide compares all of them with current timings.
Ahmedabad to Ujjain is on the Ratlam line, so several long-distance trains pass through. Two matter for planning: the daily Shanti Express, and the Sabarmati Express on three days a week. The rest are weeklies that help only if the date happens to fit.
| Train | Ahmedabad departure | Ujjain arrival | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19309 Shanti Express (to Indore) | 7:10 pm | 3:45 am next day | Daily |
| 19165 Sabarmati Express (to Darbhanga) | 11:10 pm | 6:50 am next day | Wed, Fri, Sun |
| 11463 / 11465 Somnath–Jabalpur Express | late evening | about 2:30 am | select days |
| 19335 Gandhidham–Indore Express | Monday evening | Tuesday morning | Weekly |
Shanti Express (19309) is the one to book. 3AC for families; sleeper fills a few days ahead on weekends and in Kartik.
Sabarmati Express (19165) reaches at a civilised 6:50 am and is right for Yatris who do not want to arrive before dawn.
The return Shanti (19310) leaves Indore at 11 pm, passes Ujjain at 12:15 am, and reaches Ahmedabad at 8:20 am daily, so no hotel is needed on the way home.
Timings move at every timetable change; recheck on IRCTC the week you travel. If you are combining Ujjain with other cities, our how to reach Ujjain overview covers Mumbai, Delhi and Bhopal.
Ahmedabad is unusual in having a state-run bus to Ujjain. GSRTC's AC seater leaves Gita Mandir at 7 pm daily, runs via Godhra, Dahod and Indore, and costs about ₹1,181.
Book on the GSRTC site or app, or at any ST counter.
Private operators run the same corridor overnight:
Non-AC sleeper: roughly ₹470 to ₹650.
AC sleeper: roughly ₹670 to ₹800; Volvo-type coaches a little more.
Journey time: 8 to 10 hours, arriving at Nanakheda bus stand or Dewas Gate, 2 to 4 km from the mandir and a 15-minute auto.
A bus wins on price and on boarding near home, but you arrive at a bus stand, not a station, often before dawn. For elders the train is kinder.
The drive is 390 to 420 km and takes 7 to 9 hours with a meal stop. The route is Ahmedabad, Godhra, Dahod, Ratlam, Badnawar, Ujjain; some drivers go Ratlam, Nagda, Ujjain instead. The Jhabua–Dahod stretch is the slow part, with trucks and ghat sections.
Leave by 5 am and you take darshan the same afternoon, with Shayan Aarti at 10:30 pm.
A new four-lane Ujjain–Garoth highway (NH-752D) was reported 90% complete in 2026 and is meant to cut this trip to about five and a half hours once open.
Driving makes sense for a family of four or five, or when Omkareshwar and Maheshwar are on the same trip. For two people the Shanti Express is cheaper.
Flights exist too: IndiGo and Star Air fly Ahmedabad to Indore daily in about 1 hour 15 minutes, and Indore airport is 55 km from the mandir. For most Ahmedabad Yatris, the overnight train makes the flight unnecessary.
The 4 am Bhasma Aarti is why most Ahmedabad Yatris come. Passes are issued only on the temple's official portal, at ₹200 per person, and open about a month ahead. Hotels, agents and touts cannot book them.
The Shanti arrival has its own reward: the hour after the aarti, from about 6 to 8 am, is the lightest general queue of the day. If your pass date is sold out, the ₹250 Sheeghra Darshan ticket helps later in the day.
See the Bhasma Aarti booking guide and what you get without a pass.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
With elderly parents: Sabarmati Express for the 6:50 am arrival, or drive with two halts. Avoid the pre-dawn bus stand.
On a budget: non-AC sleeper bus down, Shanti sleeper back. Travel under ₹1,500 a head.
On a tight schedule: Shanti Express Friday night, Saturday darshan and Mahakal Lok, Sunday Bhasma Aarti, return Shanti Sunday at 12:15 am from Ujjain. One hotel night.
Family of five from the western suburbs: GSRTC bus from Gita Mandir, then a car in Ujjain for Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath.
Avoid Kartik Mondays, the Diwali week around 8 November 2026 and Kartik Purnima on 24 November 2026, when the general queue runs three to four hours.
Day 0, 7:10 pm: board the Shanti Express. Dinner from home; sleep after Godhra.
Day 1: Ujjain 3:45 am. Drop bags at the hotel, general darshan from 6 am. Rest, then Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath in the afternoon. Mahakal Lok and the 10:30 pm Shayan Aarti.
Day 2: Bhasma Aarti at 4 am. Sandipani Ashram and Ram Ghat after breakfast. Shanti Express home from Ujjain at 12:15 am.
Three days? Add Omkareshwar, 140 km south, and fly or bus back from Indore.
Stay within a kilometre of the mandir so the 2 am walk to the aarti gate is short, and so a 3:45 am arrival means a bed within minutes. The temple's bhaktniwas and Mahakal Dharamshala are cheapest and fill with the aarti passes; book the day your pass confirms.
Our where to stay for Bhasma Aarti guide lists the lanes to choose.
Book the aarti date first, the Shanti Express second and the room third, and Ahmedabad to Mahakal is a calm two-night yatra. Har Har Mahadev.
