The pass sold out and you are wondering whether the trip is still worth it. It is. The Bhasma Aarti is two hours of a day that Mahakaleshwar keeps open from about 4 AM to 11 PM.
Everything else, the general darshan, the ₹250 Sheeghra Darshan queue, the evening aartis and the Mahakal Lok corridor, needs no pass at all.
Here is what a Yatri without the pre-dawn permission actually gets, with the times, the fees and the one trick that still puts you in front of the Jyotirlinga at dawn.
The temple does not close between the morning and evening rituals, so a Yatri can choose almost any hour. The pass only governs the two hours before 6 AM.
| Time | What is on | Pass needed? |
|---|---|---|
| 4:00–6:00 AM | Bhasma Aarti | Yes, ₹200 online |
| 6:00 AM onwards | General darshan reopens, morning shringar still on | No, free |
| around 7:30 AM | Dadhyodak (Bal Bhog) Aarti | No |
| around 10:30 AM | Bhog Aarti | No |
| around 5:00 PM | Sandhya Pooja | No |
| around 7:00 PM | Sandhya Aarti | Seat ₹250, or free moving darshan |
| 10:30–11:00 PM | Shayan Aarti | Seat ₹250, or free moving darshan |
The sanctum itself, the Garbhagriha, is closed to all Yatris on ordinary days. Pass or no pass, everyone takes darshan from the railing in the Nandi Hall, so you are not missing an inner view that pass holders get at other hours.
Both lines end at the same railing. The difference is time.
General darshan: free, enters from the Mahakal Lok side near the Triveni Museum. Expect 45 minutes on a quiet weekday, 2 to 4 hours on weekends and Mondays.
Sheeghra Darshan: ₹250 per person, booked online on the temple's official portal or at the temple counters. A separate barricaded queue; roughly 45 to 60 minutes most days.
Shravan 2026: the Sheeghra fee rose to ₹300 and the general line ran 6 to 8 hours on the Mondays.
The Sheeghra ticket does not include the Bhasma Aarti, the Garbhagriha or any personal pooja. It buys the shorter line and nothing else. Our free versus paid queue guide compares the two hour by hour.
You cannot sit in the hall, but you can watch the ritual as it happens.
Live darshan online: the temple's official portal streams the Bhasma Aarti every morning from 4 AM, free, from your hotel room 500 metres away.
Screens inside the temple: the ritual is projected on screens in the darshan areas, so the morning queue sees the ash offering while it waits.
Tatkal pass: a small online quota opens at 8 AM the day before, at ₹200 per person, on the official portal. Worth one attempt the morning you arrive.
If you want the full rules for that last option, the Bhasma Aarti booking guide walks through it.
Since 19 February 2026 a seat in the hall for the Sandhya Aarti or the Shayan Aarti costs ₹250 per person, booked online the same day. Sandhya booking opens at 12 noon with last entry at 6 PM; Shayan booking opens at 4 PM with last entry at 10 PM. Both enter through Gate No. 1.
Without a seat the free moving line continues through both aartis, passing the sanctum from the Kartikeya Mandapam. On a weekday evening that line is often shorter than at noon. For the full timeline see our Sandhya and Shayan Aarti guide.
One day from Indore, no pass: leave at 4:30 AM, general darshan at 6, Kaal Bhairav and Harsiddhi by 10, back in Indore for lunch. The Indore to Ujjain guide has the road and train options.
With elderly parents: the ₹250 Sheeghra queue at about 11 AM, then the Sandhya Aarti seat booked at noon. Two short lines, no 3 AM start.
On a budget: free darshan at 6 AM and the free moving line during the Shayan Aarti. Total spend: zero.
Staying one night: try the tatkal pass at 8 AM. If it fails, the 6 AM darshan the next morning is the fallback, and the Mahakal Lok corridor the evening before.
Avoid: arriving at 10 AM on a Monday without a Sheeghra ticket. That is the longest free line of the week.
Skipping the trip because the pass is gone. The pass covers two of the temple's nineteen open hours.
Buying a "Bhasma Aarti seat" from a tout at Gate 1. Fake passes are sold for ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 and fail the ID check.
Paying ₹250 for Sheeghra at 6 AM. The free line at that hour is already short; save the ticket for midday.
Expecting the Sheeghra ticket to open the Garbhagriha. It does not, for anyone, on ordinary days.
Missing the 6 PM cut-off for a Sandhya seat. Arrive at 6:30 and you join the free line.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
Without the pass you do not need a 2:30 AM alarm, but the 6 AM line is still the best of the day, and that means a bed within 1 km of the temple. The Mahakal Road and Harsiddhi lanes put you at the gate in ten minutes on foot.
Those same lanes work if the tatkal pass comes through. Our guide on where to stay for the Bhasma Aarti lists them by walking distance.
The pass is two hours. Mahakal is the whole day. Stand in the 6 AM line, take the Sheeghra ticket at noon, book the Sandhya seat, and you will go home having seen more of the temple than most pass holders do. Har Har Mahadev.
