Mumbai to Ujjain is an overnight train, a short flight into Indore, or a long day on the Mumbai–Agra highway. For most Yatris the daily Avantika Express is the answer: leave Mumbai Central in the evening, step out at Ujjain Junction around 7:30 am, and be at Mahakaleshwar within fifteen minutes.
This guide compares all three ways with current timings, distances and the one booking you must make before any ticket.
Three trains cover Mumbai to Ujjain without a change, all running up the Western line through Surat, Vadodara and Ratlam. The Avantika Express is the one to plan around because it runs every day and lands you in Ujjain at a usable hour.
| Train | From | Departs | Ujjain arrival | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12961 Avantika Express | Mumbai Central | about 8:55 pm | about 7:30 am next day | Daily |
| 12227 Indore Duronto | Mumbai Central | 11:10 pm | 8:40 am next day | Thu, Sat |
| 22943 Daund–Indore Express | Vasai Road (via Kalyan) | 7:45 pm | 6:25 am next day | Daily |
Avantika Express (12961) stops at Borivali, so Western-suburb Yatris need not go to Mumbai Central. Book 3AC for a family; sleeper fills a week out on weekends.
Duronto (12227) is the faster train but only twice a week, and its 8:40 am arrival means you miss that morning's Bhasma Aarti.
22943 is the one for Thane, Kalyan and Vasai–Virar. It leaves Vasai Road at 7:45 pm and is the earliest into Ujjain, at 6:25 am.
The return Avantika (12962) leaves Ujjain around 6:50 pm and reaches Mumbai Central early next morning, so a two-night trip works with no hotel on either night. Timings drift at each timetable change, so recheck on IRCTC the week you travel.
There is no airport in Ujjain. Mumbai to Indore is about 1 hour 25 minutes in the air, with roughly six nonstop flights a day between IndiGo and Air India.
Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport sits on the Ujjain side of Indore, and the mandir is about 55 km away, an hour and a quarter by taxi.
Flying makes sense in three cases:
You have one weekend. Saturday morning flight, darshan by noon, Bhasma Aarti Sunday 4 am, evening flight home.
Elders who cannot do a 12-hour sleeper night. Door to door is under five hours.
Train waitlists in Kartik. November dates on the Avantika sell out; flights do not.
The catch is the last leg. Prepaid taxis at Indore arrivals quote widely, and a late-night landing leaves you bargaining in the dark. Our guide to landing at Indore late at night covers what to do after the last flight lands.
By car it is roughly 640 km and 11 to 13 hours with meal breaks. The route is the Mumbai–Agra highway (NH52) through Nashik, Dhule and Sendhwa to Indore, then 55 km of the Indore–Ujjain road.
Only drive if you are a group of four or five, or you are combining Omkareshwar and Maheshwar on the same trip.
Leave Mumbai by 4 am to clear Thane and the Kasara ghat before traffic. You reach Dhule for lunch and Ujjain for Shayan Aarti.
Night driving on the Sendhwa stretch is tiring; two drivers or an overnight halt at Dhule is wiser.
AC sleeper buses also run this route from Borivali, from about ₹1,000, but take 13 to 17 hours. A train is cheaper and arrives rested.
The 4 am Bhasma Aarti is why most Mumbai Yatris come. Passes are issued only on the temple's official portal, at ₹200 per person, and the window opens about a month before the date. Hotels, agents and touts cannot book them, and anyone promising otherwise is selling a seat that does not exist.
A tatkal quota opens a day ahead, but counting on it from Mumbai is a gamble.
If the date is sold out, Mahakal still gives darshan: the ₹250 Sheeghra Darshan ticket takes you through a shorter queue through the day, and the evening Sandhya and Shayan aartis need no pass. The full procedure is in our Bhasma Aarti booking guide.

With elderly parents: fly to Indore and take a taxi; the whole journey is under five hours with no stairs at a station.
On a budget: Avantika Express sleeper, two nights on the train, one night in a bhaktniwas. Under ₹2,000 a head for travel.
On a tight schedule: Duronto on Thursday or Saturday night, Sheeghra Darshan on arrival, Avantika back the same evening.
Family of five from Thane or Vasai: train 22943 from Vasai Road, a car hire in Ujjain for the day.
Avoid reaching on a Monday in Kartik, and the Diwali week around 8 November 2026. Mahakal queues run three to four hours on those days.
Day 0, evening: board the Avantika at Mumbai Central or Borivali.
Day 1: reach Ujjain by 7:30 am, check in, general darshan by 10 am. Afternoon Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath by auto or taxi. Mahakal Lok corridor and Shayan Aarti in the evening. Sleep by 9 pm.
Day 2: Bhasma Aarti at 4 am, breakfast, Sandipani Ashram, then Avantika home at about 6:50 pm.
If you have a third day, Omkareshwar is 140 km south; see Ujjain to Omkareshwar in two days.
Stay within a kilometre of the mandir so the 2 am walk to the Bhasma Aarti gate is short. The Mahakal Dharamshala and the temple's own bhaktniwas rooms are the cheapest; book these the day your aarti pass is confirmed, because they fill with it.
Hotels in Freeganj are a 10-minute auto away and better for families wanting AC and parking.
Fix the aarti date, then the train, then the room, in that order, and Mumbai to Mahakal becomes a calm two-night yatra. Har Har Mahadev.
