About Pandharpur

Pandharpur is the seat of Vithoba (Vitthal-Rukmini), the tribal-turned-Vaishnava deity whose stone image stands hands-on-hips on a brick — the pose given to Him by the devotee Pundalik. The Wari tradition, dating to Sant Dnyaneshwar (13th c.) and Sant Tukaram (17th c.), sees lakhs of warkaris walk annually from Alandi and Dehu to Pandharpur singing abhangas — one of India's largest and oldest pilgrimages. Ashadhi Ekadashi (Jun-Jul) draws 10L+ pilgrims; Kartiki Ekadashi (Nov) is nearly as large. Chandrabhaga snan at Pundalik Mandir is considered essential before darshan.
