Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga, the smallest and last of Maharashtra's twelve jyotirlingas, opens around 5:30 AM and closes near 9:00–9:30 PM on most days, with a short midday gap that catches first-time Yatris off guard.
Sitting barely a kilometre from Ellora Caves and roughly 30 km (about an hour by road) from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, it's an easy half-day darshan once you know the aarti windows and the queue pattern.
On a regular day, Grishneshwar's sanctum is open from about 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM, and several sources note a lunchtime closure of roughly an hour around 12:00–1:00 PM, when the pujaris step away for their own rituals.
If you're planning a midday visit between Ellora Caves and lunch, this is the window to avoid.
Other days the temple appears to run a continuous morning-to-evening darshan instead, so treat the exact midday hours as approximate and build in slack.
During Shravan and Maha Shivratri, timings stretch considerably — the temple has opened as early as 3:00 AM and stayed open past 11:00 PM.
It sits in Verul village, Aurangabad district, a short walk from Ellora Caves' parking.
The day opens with Kakad Aarti around 5:30–6:00 AM, the waking ritual for the Jyotirlinga, followed by an Abhishekam (milk, honey and water offered on the linga) that typically runs into the 6:00–7:00 AM hour.
A shorter Madhyana Aarti follows around midday, and the evening carries the Sandhya Aarti — usually in the 6:30–7:30 PM stretch, with lamps and bells — before the Shej Aarti closes the day near 9:00–9:30 PM, settling the deity for the night.
If your priority is the ritual itself rather than a quick darshan, Kakad Aarti is worth waking up for: fewer crowds, cooler air, and a stillness that disappears once the buses start arriving from Sambhajinagar and Ellora.
Plain darshan at Grishneshwar is free, and most Yatris simply join the general queue.
A faster paid line exists too, sold only at the on-site counter — there's no reliable online booking for it — with pricing that varies by season, running anywhere from roughly ₹100 for a special/quick-entry pass to ₹500–700 for a VIP pass that can cut a long wait to 10–15 minutes.
Treat these as approximate and confirm the rate at the counter that day. None of this needs arranging in advance — decide once you see how long the general queue actually is that morning.
Men are expected to remove shirts, vests and belts before entering the garbhagriha, standard practice at most Jyotirlinga sanctums.
Women are asked for modest, traditional wear — sarees, kurtis or salwar kameez; shorts and Western wear are discouraged on the premises.
Mobile phones and cameras aren't allowed past the entrance and photography inside is off-limits, so hand your phone in at the free locker counters outside rather than carrying it in your pocket.
Leather items — belts, wallets, bags — are also best left in the locker; carrying bags into the queue slows you down.
None of this needs planning beyond simple clothes and minimal valuables on the day.
Wait times swing hard by day — the single biggest variable in how much of your morning Grishneshwar takes.
| Day type | Typical general-queue wait | Best arrival time |
|---|---|---|
| Regular weekday | 20–45 minutes | Before 9:00 AM |
| Saturday / regular Monday | 1–3 hours | Before 6:00 AM |
| Shravan Monday / Maha Shivratri | 2–8 hours, reports vary widely | Before 4:00 AM, or use the paid queue |
A Tuesday morning and a Shravan Monday are barely the same temple — 20 minutes versus most of a morning.
If your trip lands on a Shravan Monday, arrive well before sunrise or budget for the special/VIP counter pass.
Elders or anyone who can't stand in a long line — take the paid special or VIP queue rather than the free line on a Monday; the price is small next to two extra hours on your feet.
Budget travellers — the free general queue is genuinely fine on any day that isn't a Monday or a Shravan date; arrive by 8 AM and you're rarely waiting more than 45 minutes.
Tight schedule (Ellora Caves + Grishneshwar in one morning) — do the temple first, before the crowds and the midday gap, then Ellora Caves once the sun is higher anyway.
What to avoid — don't plan a visit for exactly 12:00–1:00 PM without a backup, and don't assume Monday timings match a weekday; Monday crowds at any Shiva jyotirlinga run heavier, Shravan Monday especially so.
Most visitors combine this with Ellora Caves, barely a kilometre from the temple gate — our half-day plan from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Airport to Grishneshwar covers that pairing in more depth.
If Grishneshwar is one stop on a bigger trip, our three-jyotirlinga circuit from Sambhajinagar lays out a realistic route, and if you're continuing on to Sai Baba's samadhi, the Sambhajinagar Airport to Shirdi guide has that leg covered.
There's very little proper hotel stock right at Grishneshwar or Ellora village.
Most Yatris base themselves in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, about an hour away, where there's a full range from budget lodges to mid-range hotels near the airport and railway station, then drive out for the morning.
A handful of basic guesthouses near the Ellora bus stand suit anyone wanting Kakad Aarti and the caves at opening time without an early drive.
For most itineraries, though, the city and a pre-dawn start is simpler and gives more choice of rooms.
Time your visit around the Kakad or Shej Aarti, keep your phone in the locker, and Grishneshwar's darshan is over faster than the drive to get there. Har Har Mahadev.
