Most visitors flying into Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for Ellora and Grishneshwar spend their first night wondering whether to base themselves near the airport or push straight toward the caves.
The honest answer depends less on the caves than on what time your flight actually lands and how early you want to start the next morning.
Grishneshwar's own darshan timings and aarti schedule are covered elsewhere; this is specifically about where to sleep the night before, since that decision shapes the whole next day more than most guides admit.
Nearly all of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar's hotel stock sits in the CIDCO area, along Jalna Road and Airport Road, roughly 4–9 km from the airport depending on the property.
This is where the Gateway, Hyatt Place, Welcomhotel, Vivanta and IRA by Orchid all sit, alongside a wide spread of mid-range options that cater to business travelers as much as pilgrims and tourists.
It's the practical default for most visitors: more restaurant choice, more room availability even on short notice, and a straightforward run back to the airport if your onward plan needs it.
Khuldabad, a smaller historic town much closer to the caves themselves and known locally as a resting place of several Mughal-era figures, is the other real option — quieter, with far fewer amenities, but it shaves real time off an early-morning departure toward Ellora.
Daulatabad, roughly between the two and built around its own hill fort, has some budget stays worth knowing about if CIDCO is full or overpriced on your dates, but it isn't a strong base on its own merits the way CIDCO or Khuldabad are.
Think of it as a fallback rather than a first pick.
If your flight gets in after 9 or 10 PM, CIDCO is the easier landing than Khuldabad, which thins out early and has little geared toward a traveler arriving hungry and tired well after dark.
Green Leaf in CIDCO's Town Centre keeps late hours and is well regarded locally.
Hotel dining at properties like Hyatt Place runs 24 hours, which matters more than it sounds once you've actually landed at 11 PM with an early Ellora start planned for the next morning and no interest in going back out to search for a meal.
Khuldabad, by contrast, is built around the temple and caves rather than late-arrival convenience — a genuinely good choice if you're driving in during daylight hours with time to settle in, a much harder one if you're touching down after dark with nothing pre-arranged.
From CIDCO, budget about 29–30 km and 40 minutes to reach either Ellora Caves or Grishneshwar Temple.
They're close enough to each other, about 1 km apart, that this is effectively one drive, not two separate trips requiring separate planning.
From Khuldabad, the same sites are a short 10–15 minute hop, which is the real argument for staying there if an early, unhurried start matters more to you than dinner options the night before.
The gap between these two numbers is the whole decision, really: forty minutes of extra driving each morning against a noticeably thinner range of places to eat, sleep and while away an evening.
| Base | Distance to Ellora/Grishneshwar | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| CIDCO (airport area) | ~29–30 km, ~40 min | Late arrivals, dining choice, room availability |
| Khuldabad | ~5–8 km, 10–15 min | Early starts, quieter stay, fewer amenities |
| Daulatabad | Roughly midway | Budget stays near the fort, not a strong standalone base |
Early morning, roughly 6 to 9 AM, is the window locals and repeat visitors recommend for Ellora — it beats both the heat and the day-tour crowds that build steadily from mid-morning.
And photographers specifically favor 8–9 AM for the light inside the Kailasa Temple's carved interior, when it falls at an angle that shows the rock-cut detail rather than flattening it.
Whichever base you pick, back-calculate from that window:
A CIDCO stay means leaving by 5:15–5:30 AM to be there for 6, factoring in the drive and finding parking before the site properly opens.
While Khuldabad gives you a much later, calmer wake-up for the same start time and a shorter walk from car to entrance.
Landing at night, flying out again soon — CIDCO, for the dining and the shorter run back to the airport.
Want the earliest possible start with minimal driving — Khuldabad, accepting fewer restaurant options in exchange for a 10-minute morning commute.
Traveling with elders — CIDCO's wider room and amenity choice generally serves better, even with the longer morning drive.
What to avoid — don't assume you need separate stays for Ellora and Grishneshwar; a single base near either covers both given the 1 km gap between them.
For most visitors, CIDCO is the sensible default: more choice, better late-night options, and only 40 minutes from the sites the next morning — close enough that the extra drive rarely changes the plan for the day.
Choose Khuldabad specifically if an unhurried, early departure matters more than your evening options, particularly if you're arriving by road in daylight rather than flying in late.
Treat Daulatabad as a budget fallback rather than a first choice, useful mainly when CIDCO's better-known properties are full or priced above what the trip calls for.
Pick CIDCO or Khuldabad based on when you land and how early you want to leave, not on which site you're visiting first. Har Har Mahadev.
