Delhi is rarely the destination for a Yatri headed to Haridwar, Kedarnath or Vaishno Devi — it's the night before. Where you sleep that night decides whether your onward bus or train is a calm walk away or a scramble across the city at midnight.
Most onward journeys toward the Char Dham or Vaishno Devi start from one of two places: ISBT Kashmere Gate for buses, or New Delhi/Old Delhi railway stations for trains. If you're flying in first, IGI Airport is a third starting point entirely, on the opposite side of the city from both.
Staying near whichever one you're actually leaving from matters more than staying somewhere central. Kashmere Gate and the railway stations sit close to each other in Old Delhi; the airport and its Aerocity hotels are a separate cluster entirely, roughly 45 minutes to an hour away by road depending on traffic.
Worth double-checking before you book: trains toward Haridwar can depart from either New Delhi or Old Delhi station, and the two are several kilometres apart. Confirm which one is printed on your actual ticket rather than assuming.
The Delhi Metro also connects the airport to Kashmere Gate directly, about 23 km and 40-45 minutes with one change at Hauz Khas, for roughly ₹54. It runs until nearly midnight, which makes it a genuinely usable budget option if your flight lands with enough daylight left.
The last bus to Katra from ISBT Kashmere Gate leaves around 11:55 PM, one of over 140 direct daily departures on that route. Toward Haridwar, the last train — the Kota-Dehradun AC Express — pulls out of New Delhi at 11:50 PM and reaches Haridwar by roughly 3:55 AM, a four-hour run.
Which timing suits your plan?
Landing at the airport in the afternoon — an Aerocity hotel for the evening, then a taxi to Kashmere Gate or the station with time to spare.
Want the latest possible departure — book near Kashmere Gate itself so the walk to your bus or train is minutes, not an hour of Delhi traffic.
Arriving already tired from a flight or long train ride — skip the midnight departure altogether and take a morning bus or train after a full night's sleep instead.
Near ISBT Kashmere Gate, hotel rates run roughly ₹1,000 to ₹4,000 a night, with a few properties offering hourly bookings — useful if you're only in Delhi for a few hours before a late departure and don't want to pay for a full night.
Paharganj, a short ride from Kashmere Gate, is the budget guesthouse cluster most backpackers and pilgrims already know, with far more room options than the immediate ISBT area. Near IGI Airport, Aerocity has hotels within a 5-10 minute walk of the terminals, useful if your flight lands late or leaves early.
| Hub | Best for | Typical hotel range |
|---|---|---|
| ISBT Kashmere Gate | Bus to Katra, Haridwar, Rishikesh | ₹1,000-4,000, hourly options available |
| Paharganj | Budget stay, short ride to Kashmere Gate | Wide range, backpacker-friendly |
| Aerocity (IGI Airport) | Late flight arrivals or early departures | Airport-hotel pricing, 5-10 min walk to terminals |
If you've got a few free hours before a late bus or train and you're staying in Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk comes alive after sunset — old sweet shops, street chai stalls and lit-up Mughal-era lanes, calmer to walk than during the day's crowds.
Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib is a short ride from Kashmere Gate and open through the evening, a natural stop before a yatra of your own. Kanwarji, one of Old Delhi's oldest sweet shops, and the fresh biscuits at Ballimaran are the kind of small, specific stops that make a two-hour walk feel worthwhile rather than aimless.
Keep it low-key. This is the night before a long journey, not a full evening out — an hour of walking and a cup of chai is enough.
Don't book a hotel purely on price or star rating without checking its distance from your actual departure point — Delhi's traffic turns a short map distance into a long, stressful ride after dark.
Don't assume the last bus or train listed online runs every single day without exception; confirm it for your specific date before relying on it.
Don't plan a big night out before a long yatra — save the energy for the journey and darshan ahead.
Safe travels, and a good rest before the road ahead.
