Getting from Delhi to Vaishno Devi involves more moving pieces than the train ticket alone:
a registration slip with its own expiry clock,
a 13 km trek with several transport choices,
and a helicopter option that needs booking well ahead.
Here's how the pieces actually fit together.
Several direct trains connect New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station.
The Vande Bharat Express covers the 655 km run in about 8 hours, departing New Delhi in the early morning and running most days of the week — schedules and even train numbers get revised periodically, so confirm the current timing on IRCTC close to your travel date rather than relying on a fixed departure time.
The Shri Shakti AC Superfast Express runs daily, taking around 10 hours 45 minutes over 654 km. The Uttar Sampark Kranti Superfast leaves New Delhi in the evening, around 8:50 PM, arriving Katra close to 8 AM the next morning — useful if you'd rather sleep through the journey than sit through a daytime run.
Every pilgrim needs a Yatra Registration Slip before starting the trek — it's mandatory and free, and it's what lets you past the first checkpoint.
If you're also weighing a Char Dham trip this season, the registration system for Kedarnath works on a similar principle; see our Kedarnath yatra registration guide from Delhi for how that one differs.
You can pre-register online at the official site, maavaishnodevi.org, creating a devotee ID and downloading your slip, or register in person at counters in Katra near the bus stand and Tarakote Marg area. Either way, the RFID card itself typically needs in-person collection with a photo at Katra.
The detail that catches people out: the slip is valid only 6 hours from the moment it's issued, and you need to cross the Banganga checkpoint, about 1.5 km from the registration counter, inside that window — miss it and the card gets confiscated, meaning you register again from scratch.
Carry a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, driving licence or passport) to register.
The full distance from Katra (Darshani Deori) to Bhawan is roughly 12-13 km. Walking it takes about 5-7 hours uphill and 3-5 hours on the way down.
Ponies and palkis operate along the route for those who'd rather ride than walk the whole stretch, and battery cars/e-vehicles cover the upper section from Ardhkuwari — roughly the halfway point at 6 km — to Bhawan, in about 15-20 minutes, meaning the battery car doesn't save you the first half of the climb.
If you're travelling with anyone who has mobility concerns, plan around the pony or palki for the full stretch rather than assuming the battery car will carry them from Katra itself.
The helicopter service between Katra and Sanjichhat, close to Bhawan, is booked through the official portal, maavaishnodevi.org, and operated in practice by empanelled operators. For the 2025-26 season the fare is roughly ₹2,320 one-way or ₹4,640 round trip per person, with the flight itself taking about 8 minutes against several hours on foot.
Bookings open up to about 60 days ahead, with departures roughly every 20 minutes through the day. Wait times during peak season aren't officially published in any source we could confirm, so build in a buffer if you're relying on the helicopter to make a tight schedule work, especially around Navratri.
On a tight schedule with a fixed return date — the helicopter cuts most of the trek to minutes; book it the moment your dates are fixed, not the week before.
Traveling with elders — pony or palki for the full Katra-Bhawan stretch, not just the upper battery-car section, and budget extra time rather than rushing the registration-slip window.
On a budget, fit and unhurried — walking the full 12-13 km costs nothing beyond your registration slip, and most pilgrims do exactly this.
Visiting during Navratri — expect meaningfully larger crowds than an ordinary day; Chaitra Navratri 2026 falls March 19-27 and Shardiya Navratri October 11-20, and both periods have seen registration counters temporarily paused overnight during past rush surges.
The road distance from Delhi to Katra runs about 630-650 km via NH44, roughly 12-13 hours of driving.
Taxi quotes for the route vary widely by vehicle and operator — budget sedans start around ₹5,500 one-way, with standard sedans commonly quoted higher and SUVs running upward of ₹15,000 — so get more than one quote before booking rather than accepting the first figure offered.
| Option | Time Katra-Bhawan / Delhi-Katra | Approx. cost |
|---|---|---|
| Walking (Katra-Bhawan) | 5-7 hrs up, 3-5 hrs down | Free beyond the registration slip |
| Pony/palki | Full stretch, faster than walking | Regulated but variable rates |
| Battery car (Ardhkuwari-Bhawan only) | ~15-20 min for the upper half | Regulated fare |
| Helicopter (Katra-Sanjichhat) | ~8 min flight | ~₹4,640 round trip (2025-26 season) |
| Train (Delhi-Katra) | ~8-11 hrs | Standard rail fare |
| Taxi (Delhi-Katra) | ~12-13 hrs | ~₹5,500+ one-way |
Bhawan sits at an altitude of roughly 1,585 metres, so the trek involves a genuine climb even without technical difficulty. Free cloak room facilities are available at Shrine Board guest houses in Katra, including near the registration complex, and at Bhawan itself, so you don't need to carry a full pack up the mountain.
Bhairon Mandir, a common side-trip from Bhawan, sits a further 2-3 km away, reachable by a steep walk of about an hour or by a ropeway between Bhawan and Bhairon Ghati — worth factoring in if you're already tight on time after the main darshan.
Most pilgrims base themselves in Katra rather than travelling straight through, since the trek itself needs a rested start — arriving late at night after a long train or drive and setting out on the climb immediately is a common way to make an already long day much harder than it needs to be.
However you make the journey, may Mata Vaishno Devi's darshan bring you peace. Jai Mata Di.
