The Simhastha Kumbh Mela at Ujjain happens once every 12 years and returns in 2028 — the largest religious gathering the city sees, with over 14 crore devotees expected. This guide gives the confirmed dates, the three Shahi Snan schedule, why it's called "Simhastha", and how to plan a snan yatra now — because stays get booked 9-12 months ahead.
Full mela duration — 27 March 2028 to 27 May 2028 (2 months)
Location — Ujjain, on the banks of the Kshipra river (Ram Ghat + adjoining ghats)
Expected turnout — 14-15 crore devotees over the two months
Announcing authority — Government of Madhya Pradesh via simhastha.org.in (official portal)
| Snan | Date | Tithi |
|---|---|---|
| First Shahi Snan | 9 April 2028 | Chaitra Purnima |
| Second Shahi Snan | 23 April 2028 | Vaishakh Krishna Amavasya |
| Third Shahi Snan | 8 May 2028 | Vaishakh Shukla Purnima |
On Shahi Snan days, the akharas (monastic orders) enter the river first in procession, followed by the general public. Snan slots are staggered to manage the crowd; expect 10-15 lakh people at the ghats each day.
The Ujjain Kumbh is called Simhastha because it happens when the planet Jupiter (Guru) enters Leo (Simha rashi) — a 12-year cycle. Combined with the sun's position in Aries during Vaishakh, this gives the astronomical alignment considered most auspicious for a moksha-granting snan at Ujjain.
The four Kumbh cities each get their turn based on planetary positions — Ujjain (Simhastha, Jupiter in Leo), Nashik (Sinhastha, similar), Haridwar (Jupiter in Aquarius + Sun in Aries), Prayagraj (Jupiter in Taurus + Sun in Capricorn).
Kshipra snan — the central ritual; snan at Ram Ghat or the extended snan ghats is believed to grant moksha (liberation)
Mahakaleshwar darshan — the mandir stays open extended hours; Bhasma Aarti slots are the year's most sought after
Akhara processions — Naga sadhus, Vaishnav akharas, and various monastic orders take out ceremonial processions to the river
Katha, kirtan, satsang — thousands of temporary pandals across the mela grounds host discourses by saints
Free anna daan (food) — hundreds of camps serve free meals to devotees
Stays within 3-5 km of the Kshipra ghats sell out 9-12 months before Shahi Snan dates. If you're planning a Shahi Snan visit, book now — even 6 months out you'll find only far-flung options.
For non-Shahi-Snan days (regular days within the mela window), stay availability is easier — but still book 3-4 months ahead.
Crowd — 10-15 lakh people at ghats on Shahi Snan days; walking distances are long and slow
Traffic — private vehicles restricted within a 5-10 km radius of the ghats on Shahi Snan days; expect to walk 3-5 km from parking
Accommodation prices — 3-5x normal rates around Shahi Snan dates
Weather — March-May is hot in Ujjain (30-42°C); carry water, cotton clothes, umbrella / hat
Temporary infrastructure — MP Tourism sets up tent cities, ghats, medical camps, information counters — all operational only during the mela
Valid photo ID (Aadhaar preferred — used at snan ghat entry)
Small backpack — 1 change of clothes for after snan + towel
Cash — several ₹100 and ₹500 notes for prasad, autos, and daan
Water bottle + ORS + basic medicines (crowd + heat combination)
Sturdy walking shoes (long walking distances)
Small torch for early morning ghat visits
If Shahi Snan crowds feel too intense, plan for regular days within the 2-month mela window. You get most of the atmosphere — akhara pandals, Ram Ghat snan, Mahakaleshwar darshan, mela grounds — with 1/10th the crush. Weekdays between the three Shahi dates are ideal.
Nearest airport — Indore (IDR), 57 km · plan for heavier-than-usual airport traffic in April-May 2028
Nearest station — Ujjain Junction (UJN), 2 km from mandir · Indian Railways runs special Kumbh trains; book Tatkal or 60-90 days ahead
Road — private taxi from Indore is the most flexible; buses run frequently during the mela
Simhastha Kumbh 2028 is a once-in-12-years opportunity. If a Shahi Snan is on your list, book stay + transport 9-12 months ahead; if flexibility matters more than the exact snan date, aim for the regular days between 9 April and 8 May. Har Har Mahadev! Ki jai Mahakal! 🚩
