Between Diwali on 8 November 2026 and New Year there are nine days when Mahakal and Omkareshwar are not ordinary temples: festivals, the Sawari Mondays, and the last week of December. A normal weekday brings Mahakal about 1.2 lakh Yatris; those days bring several times that.
Here is the calendar, so you can pick a quiet date or the festival itself.
| Date | What happens | Where | Crowd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 6 Nov | Dhanteras | Ujjain | Rising |
| Sun 8 Nov | Diwali: Mahakal's ubtan and early aarti | Ujjain | Very heavy |
| Mon 9–Tue 10 Nov | Govardhan Pooja, Bhai Dooj | Ujjain | Heavy |
| Mon 16 Nov | First Kartik Sawari of Mahakal (listed) | Ujjain | Heavy from noon |
| Fri 20 Nov | Dev Uthani Ekadashi | Both | Moderate |
| Mon 23 Nov | Sawari, then Harihar Milan at midnight | Ujjain | Heavy, all night |
Two of these are Mondays by design. The Kartik–Agahan Sawari of Mahakal goes out on the Mondays after Diwali. 16 and 23 November are the dates listed so far, and later Agahan Mondays usually follow. Confirm the full list on the temple's notice before you fix a Monday.
Diwali at Mahakal starts before dawn with the ubtan and a Bhasma Aarti that draws lakhs through the day. The temple now allows only a single sparkler per aarti; the crowd is the spectacle. Our Diwali day plan gives the hour-by-hour.
Avoid 8 November if you want a calm darshan. Go on Thursday 5 November instead.
Govardhan Pooja on 9 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 November keep Ujjain full. Omkareshwar is the quieter Jyotirlinga those two days.
Rooms within a kilometre of Mahakal Lok sell out for the week. Book the moment your dates are fixed.
The Kartik–Agahan Sawari is the winter version of the Shravan procession: shorter, but Ujjain's streets close along the route from early afternoon. On 23 November the Sawari runs into Harihar Milan, when Mahakal visits Gopal Mandir around midnight, and the town does not sleep. Our night plan covers that evening.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November is moderate at both temples and a good Friday to travel. The Omkareshwar Kartik Purnima plan explains the snan timings.
The Jayanti is a Tuesday this year. The crowd is at Kal Bhairav Mandir, some 5 km from Mahakal, where the night Janm Aarti and the liquor offering draw a queue that starts the previous evening. Mahakal itself is busy but workable.
The Bhasma Aarti seats for 1 December go the minute Tatkal opens at 8 am on 30 November. Our Janm Aarti day plan has the sequence.
This is the biggest crowd of the calendar, bigger than Diwali. Between 25 and 31 December 2025 the committee counted over 7 lakh Yatris, with the district putting arrivals at 1.5 to 2 lakh a day.
VIP protocol darshan was suspended for the period.
Online Bhasma Aarti booking was closed from 25 December to 5 January. Only the day-ahead route ran.
Yatris entered from the Triveni Museum and Char Dham sides and walked about 2.5 km to the queue.
Four-wheelers entering Ujjain doubled from about 6,000 a day to 12,000.
Expect a similar restriction in 2026, now through the online Tatkal quota. If the holiday week is fixed, come 27 or 28 December, sleep in Ujjain, do Bhasma Aarti, and give Omkareshwar the 31st.
With elderly parents: Tuesday to Thursday between 2 and 18 December. Cool mornings, short queues, no road closures.
With children: 11–13 December or 18–20 December, before the Christmas rush. The Omkareshwar boat is running.
On a tight budget: 2–5 December. Rooms drop after Kaal Bhairav Jayanti.
For the festival itself: 23 November for Harihar Milan, or 8 November for the Diwali ubtan. Book rooms six weeks out.
Avoid: 8 November, 24 November at Omkareshwar, and 29 December to 1 January anywhere in Ujjain.
Weekends are always heavier than weekdays. Late-2025 temple counts put a plain weekday near 1.2 lakh and a weekend day at 1.5 to 1.75 lakh, before any festival.
For Diwali, Harihar Milan and the New Year week, sleep in Ujjain within walking distance of the Mahakal Lok entrance; the roads near the temple close and a taxi cannot reach the gate. For Kartik Purnima, stay on the Omkareshwar mainland near the bridge. For quiet December weekdays, Indore is fine; both temples are under two hours away.
Choose the date for the darshan you want, calm or crowded, and the rest of the plan follows. Har Har Mahadev.
