Mahakaleshwar is about 55 km from Indore, and the real question is never how to get there but which darshan you are going for. Bhasma Aarti needs a pass booked online days ahead, Sandhya and Shayan aarti need a ₹250 slot booked the same day, and ordinary darshan needs only patience.
This guide lays out the timings and the pass rules as they stand in October 2026, written for a Yatri starting in Indore.
The temple is open roughly 4 AM to 11 PM with no afternoon closure, which is unusual for a Jyotirlinga. Five aartis divide the day, and two of them need a paid pass.
| Aarti | Approximate time | Pass needed |
|---|---|---|
| Bhasma Aarti | 4 AM – 6 AM | Online pass, ₹200, booked in advance |
| Naivedya (morning bhog) | 7 AM – 8 AM | None |
| Madhyahna bhog | around 10:30 AM, short closure | None |
| Sandhya Aarti | early evening, moves with the season | ₹250 online slot, same day |
| Shayan Aarti | around 10:30 PM | ₹250 online slot, same day |
Two cautions on the table. The timetable switches to its winter schedule in the last week of October 2026, so the evening aarti moves earlier than the summer time you may find on older pages. Check the official temple portal in the week you travel.
The pass system changed this year, and a lot of advice online is a year out of date. These are the rules reported in 2026:
Online only. Reports from April 2026 say the offline counter has been stopped and online booking is compulsory.
Advance quota opens about 30 days ahead and is gone within seconds. The portal already lists advance bookings for November 2026.
Tatkal quota opens the day before, in the morning. Most reports say 8 AM; one says 10 AM, so be logged in early.
₹200 per person, with every name matched to a photo ID at the gate.
One mobile number, one booking in three months, a rule reported in July 2026 to stop resale.
The temple committee has said it authorises no agents, no WhatsApp groups and no social media pages to sell Bhasma Aarti passes. Anyone offering a guaranteed slot for a fee is selling you a queue you could have joined yourself, or nothing at all. The Bhasma Aarti booking guide walks through the portal screens.
Indore to the temple is 55 km and takes 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi, a little less on an empty road at night. Work backwards from each aarti.
Bhasma Aarti: leave Indore by 12:30 AM. Reporting is between 1 AM and 2:30 AM at the designated gate, and nobody is admitted once the gate shuts before 3 AM.
Ordinary morning darshan: leave Indore at 6 AM, be at Nandi Dwar by 7:30 AM, and you are out before the 10 AM crowd builds.
Sandhya Aarti: the ₹250 slot opens online at 12 noon, last entry is 6 PM. Leave Indore by 3:30 PM.
Shayan Aarti: the slot opens at 4 PM, last entry 10 PM. Plan on returning to Indore after midnight, or sleeping in Ujjain.
If your flight lands at Indore late, the late-night arrival plan covers the 1 AM run in detail.
On a normal weekday the free line takes 1 to 3 hours from the Mahakal Lok entry to the sanctum view. On Mondays, Pradosh days and festival days it stretches well beyond that.
The ₹250 Shighra Darshan pass puts you in a shorter, separate queue and is the best money spent on the whole circuit if you have a train to catch. Buy it at the temple counters, never from a tout.
Entry to Mahakal Lok itself is free, through Nandi Dwar or Pinaki Dwar. Phones and cameras are banned inside the temple, so use the lockers before you join the line. Sanctum entry for general Yatris is restricted and jal abhishek is done from outside the garbhagriha; the temple rules guide explains what is and is not allowed.
With elderly parents: ordinary darshan with the ₹250 pass, leaving Indore at 6 AM. Skip Bhasma Aarti unless they can stand from 2 AM to 6 AM.
On a budget: free line on a Tuesday to Thursday morning, Indore to Ujjain by train for the fare of a cup of tea.
Tight schedule, same-day from Indore: Shighra Darshan at 8 AM, Kal Bhairav and Harsiddhi by 11, back in Indore for lunch.
First Bhasma Aarti: sleep in Ujjain the night before, so the 1 AM gate is a 10-minute walk, not a 55 km drive.
Avoid the free line on a Monday morning, and avoid any "VIP darshan" sold outside the gates. The road, rail and bus comparison shows what each option costs in time.
Bhasma Aarti dress: dhoti and kurta or unstitched sola for men, saree or salwar suit for women. Jeans and shirts are turned back.
ID: Aadhaar, passport or voter card, the same one used on the pass.
Carry: a shawl in winter, the pass printout or screenshot, and nothing electronic beyond your phone.
Leave in the car: cameras, bags, leather belts. The driver minds them.
For Bhasma Aarti, stay in Ujjain within a kilometre of the temple, so the 1 AM reporting time is a walk. Rooms near the temple sell out two weeks ahead for Mondays and festival dates.
For every other darshan, Indore makes the better base. It has the airport, the better hotels, and the road to Omkareshwar for day two.
Book the pass, set the alarm, and let the driver worry about the road. Har Har Mahadev.
