For general darshan at Mahakal and Omkareshwar there is no strict dress code; modest clothes are fine. The rules bite in three places: the Mahakal Bhasma Aarti (dhoti, saree, printed pass, original ID), the mobile phone ban inside Mahakal, and the no-touching, water-only rule in the Omkareshwar sanctum. This guide covers all three, starting from Indore.
Neither temple turns away a Yatri in ordinary clothes for general darshan. Omkareshwar's trust states it plainly: no specific dress code, simple and modest clothes. Mahakal is the same at the general queue.
The rituals are different. For Bhasma Aarti at Mahakal:
Men: an unstitched dhoti, with the upper body bare or covered by an angavastram or sola. Shirts, vests and t-shirts are not allowed in the seated area.
Women: a saree. Some gate staff accept a full salwar suit with a dupatta over the head for unmarried women. A saree is never refused, so carry one.
Both: no jeans, leggings, shorts, sleeveless tops or leather belts.
For Mahakal's sanctum, if you hold a sanctum entry, the rule is the same dhoti for men and saree for women. The sanctum has been closed to walk-in devotees since 4 July 2023. Most Yatris offer jal from the Nandi hall through the arrangement the temple runs that day.
Phones and cameras are banned inside the Mahakal temple, not just inside the sanctum. The ban is enforced at the security check, so plan for it before you enter the queue.
Lockers sit at the Mahakal Lok entrance, before the 900 m corridor begins. Some cloakrooms are free; a QR-code locker system with paid sizes was being added in 2026.
Leave big bags in the taxi. Small bags are checked and slow you down.
Leather belts and wallets are turned back at some gates. Wear a cloth belt or none.
Footwear goes in the stand before the corridor. Carry socks in winter; the stone is cold at 3 am.
The Mahakal Lok corridor itself, from the Nandi Dwar to the temple, is free to enter and open through the day. Our Mahakal timings guide covers each queue and when it is shortest.
| Pass | Where | What it costs | What you must carry |
|---|---|---|---|
| General darshan | Both temples | Free | Nothing; modest clothes |
| Shighra (quick) darshan | Mahakal | About ₹250 per person | Ticket from the counter or portal |
| Bhasma Aarti seat | Mahakal | About ₹200 per person | Two printed passes, original ID, dhoti or saree |
| Priority darshan | Omkareshwar | Around ₹300 per person | Online ticket, valid only for the booked slot |
Bhasma Aarti booking moved fully online in 2026. The offline counter near Gate 5 was abolished, and its 300 seats became a Tatkal quota that opens at 8 am the day before on the temple's portal. The advance window is about 30 days. Book the moment the window opens; Shravan and festival dates go in minutes.
Omkareshwar's paid special darshan runs only until 8 pm, so a Yatri arriving late from Ujjain joins the general line.
The Omkareshwar trust publishes its sanctum rules, and they are short:
Do not touch the Shivling. It is strictly prohibited.
Only darshan and a jal offering are allowed inside the garbhagriha. No other ritual happens there.
Abhishek is done by the temple's own pujaris at designated places, not at the Shivling.
Two persons per pooja, aarti or abhishek booking; extra people pay extra.
Cameras with large lenses are not allowed inside the complex. Phones are tolerated in the outer areas, but photography near the sanctum is stopped. Mamleshwar, across the river, follows the same calm practice.
Carry: printed passes, original ID, a dhoti or saree in a cloth bag, socks, a small bottle of water for the queue, loose change for the footwear stand.
Leave in the taxi: phone, camera, leather belt, wallet, large bag, and anything metal that slows the frisking.
For the Omkar Parvat parikrama, about 7 km, carry a cap and water. The parikrama route guide lists the stops.
Prasad: buy it inside or just outside the gate, not from the car park. The inner counters are the ones the temple runs.
First Bhasma Aarti: the dress, the paper pass and the 2:30 am reporting time. Miss any one and the seat is lost.
With elderly parents: the phone ban means you cannot call each other inside. Fix a meeting point at the Nandi Dwar before you split.
With children: no phone means no screen in a two-hour queue. Carry a small toy or book.
On a tight schedule: Shighra darshan at Mahakal and priority darshan at Omkareshwar before 8 pm cut the day in half.
Avoid: arriving at Mahakal with the booking only on your phone, and arriving at Omkareshwar after 8 pm expecting a paid queue.
Our nine mistakes post has the rest.
Sleep in Ujjain the night before Bhasma Aarti, within a short walk of the Mahakal Lok entrance, so you can leave the phone in the room and walk to the gate at 2:30 am. In Omkareshwar, a room on the mainland near the bridge avoids the boat. From Indore, both temples are day trips, but the aarti is not.
Know the rules before the gate, and the darshan is calm. Har Har Mahadev.
