Yes, Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar can be done in one day from Indore, but only by car, only on a weekday, and only if you leave at 4 am. The loop is about 270 km and 6 to 7 hours of driving, which leaves roughly 5 hours for two temples and the queues between them.
This guide gives the hour-by-hour plan, the two timings that break it, and what gets cut.
Start with the road, because nothing else moves. Each leg below is a normal-traffic estimate; add half an hour per leg in Shravan or on a holiday.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Indore → Ujjain (Mahakal) | 55 km | about 1.5 hrs |
| Ujjain → Omkareshwar | about 140 km | 3–4 hrs |
| Omkareshwar → Indore | about 78 km | 2–2.5 hrs |
| Total | about 270 km | 6.5–8 hrs |
That leaves about 5 hours for everything that is not driving. Mahakal on a weekday takes about an hour in the free queue and 45–60 minutes with the ₹250 Shighra darshan.
Omkareshwar takes about the same with its ₹300 Shighra darshan. Add lunch and two walks from the parking and the day closes at roughly 8 pm.
So the answer is yes on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. On a Monday, a weekend or a festival, the Mahakal queue alone eats the Omkareshwar afternoon.
Both temples have a window you must hit, and they pull in opposite directions.
Mahakaleshwar: open 4 am to 11 pm. Bhasma aarti runs 4 to 6 am with a ₹200 online pass booked 30 days ahead; general darshan through the Mahakal Lok corridor from early morning. The afternoon slot, roughly 12 to 4 pm, usually has the shortest free queue.
Omkareshwar: darshan 5 am to 12:20 pm, then Madhyanha Bhog until 1:15 pm, then 1:15 to 4 pm, then Shringar darshan 4:30 to 9:30 pm. Darshan also pauses during each aarti.
The danger is the middle. Leave Ujjain at 10 am and you reach Omkareshwar at about 1:30, which works. Leave at 9 and you arrive at 12:30, inside the bhog break, and lose 45 minutes standing on the bridge. Our post on which Jyotirlinga to do first argues the order in detail.
This is the Mahakal-first version, which is right for most Yatris because Mahakal's queue is the bigger risk and is shortest at dawn.
4:00 am leave Indore. Tea on the Ujjain road.
5:30 am reach Mahakal. Shighra darshan ticket, or the free line if it is a weekday.
7:30 am darshan done. Breakfast in the lanes behind the temple.
9:45 am leave Ujjain towards Omkareshwar, via the Indore bypass.
1:15 pm reach Omkareshwar as darshan reopens after bhog. Park on the mainland, walk the bridge.
3:00 pm darshan done. Cross back for Mamleshwar, 20 minutes.
4:00 pm leave Omkareshwar.
6:30 pm Indore.
The reverse order, Omkareshwar at 5 am and Mahakal in the 12–4 pm slot, also works and suits Yatris who want to see Omkareshwar's Narmada at dawn. It fails on Mondays, when the Mahakal afternoon queue is no shorter than the morning one.
A one-day loop buys two darshans and nothing else. Know what you are giving up before you choose it.
Bhasma aarti. It runs 4 to 6 am and needs you in Ujjain by 3 am; from Indore that means leaving at 1:30. Possible, but you will drive to Omkareshwar on no sleep. Sleep in Ujjain instead and do the loop the next day.
Omkar Parvat parikrama. About 7 km around the island, two hours. Gone.
Ujjain's other temples. Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi, Mangalnath. All skipped; the temples near Ujjain circuit needs its own day.
Omkareshwar's evening aarti at Koti Tirth Ghat. You are on the road to Indore when it starts.
Any margin for a breakdown or a wedding procession on the Ujjain bypass.
If three of these matter to you, this is a two-day trip, and the two Jyotirlingas in 2 days itinerary is the one to read.
With elders: no. Six hours in a car between two temple walks is the wrong day for them. Take two days and sleep in Ujjain.
On a budget: by bus, no. The 9 am bus from Ujjain reaches Omkareshwar inside the bhog break and the return buses after 4 pm are a gamble. By shared taxi, yes.
On a tight schedule: yes, with both Shighra tickets bought the night before and a car waiting at both gates.
Avoid: Mondays, weekends, Shravan, the week of Mahashivratri, and any plan that reaches Omkareshwar between 12:20 and 1:15.
The honest version of this plan for most families is a late evening in Ujjain and the loop next morning. Stay within 500 m of Mahakal in the ₹2,000–3,800 band, walk to Gate 3 for Bhasma aarti at 3 am, and leave for Omkareshwar at 8.
You arrive at 11:30, before the bhog break, and are home in Indore by 5 pm with every item on the cut list restored except the parikrama.
Omkareshwar is the other option, with rooms from about ₹1,400 near the temple, if you want dawn darshan there and Mahakal in the afternoon slot on the way home.
Two Jyotirlingas before sunset is a real day, not a boast, if you respect the 9:45 and the 1:15. Har Har Mahadev.
