Do Omkareshwar first and Mahakal second, unless you hold a Bhasma Aarti pass. The reason is the timetable: Omkareshwar shuts its garbhagriha 12:20–13:15 and again 16:00–16:30, while Mahakaleshwar stays open 04:00 to 23:00 with no break. Start at the temple that closes, finish at the one that does not.
Indore sits between the two Jyotirlingas, which is why every route passes back through it. There is no direct road from Ujjain to Omkareshwar that beats the Indore highway.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Indore → Ujjain | 55 km | 1 h – 1 h 15 m, four-lane |
| Indore → Omkareshwar | 77 km | 2 – 2.5 h, via the Choral ghat |
| Ujjain → Omkareshwar (via Indore) | ~140 km | 3 – 3.5 h |
| Full loop from Indore | ~272 km | about 7 h driving |
The Omkareshwar leg is the slow one, with the ghat between Simrol and Barwaha. On Sawan Mondays and Mahashivratri, diversions before Mortakka push it toward 4 hours.
The Shri Omkareshwar Temple Trust's daily schedule has hard stops:
Darshan 05:00–12:20, then Madhyanha bhog, closed until 13:15
Darshan 13:15–16:00, then Sayamkalin shringar, closed until 16:30
Shringar darshan 16:30–21:30, shayan aarti 21:30–22:00
Mahakaleshwar, by contrast, is open from about 04:00 to 23:00 every day. Its only pass-controlled window is the Bhasma Aarti, 04:00–06:00, and its Sandhya aarti falls at 19:00–19:45 in summer and 18:30–19:15 after the winter switch around 27 October 2026.
So Omkareshwar punishes a late arrival with an hour's wait; Mahakal punishes nothing but a Monday. Visit the strict temple when you control the clock, the morning, and leave the flexible one for the afternoon.
05:30 leave Indore; the ghat is empty and the Choral stretch takes 90 minutes.
07:45 reach the Omkareshwar ghat. Weekday morning queues are the lightest of the day; on weekends book the trust's free online token in advance.
08:00–10:00 darshan, the bridge across to Mamleshwar about 1 km away, and a boat ride if the river allows.
10:15 leave; back through Indore to Ujjain by 13:30–14:00.
14:00–17:00 Mahakal darshan. On a weekday the general queue is manageable; on Mondays or weekends take the ₹250 Shighra Darshan ticket, which brings the wait to about an hour.
19:00 Sandhya aarti (18:30 in winter), then 55 km home to Indore by 21:00.
Nothing in this plan races a closure. For the longer version with a night in Ujjain, see our two-Jyotirlinga two-day itinerary from Indore.
Start in Ujjain without a Bhasma pass and the maths turns against you:
Darshan at Mahakal from 06:00, out by 08:00 on a good day, 09:30 on a Monday.
Ujjain to Omkareshwar is 3–3.5 hours, so you reach the ghat between 11:30 and 13:00.
Arrive at 11:30 and you have under an hour before the 12:20 closure, with a queue in front of you. Arrive at 12:30 and you wait until 13:15.
Darshan at 13:30, Mamleshwar at 14:30, and you are leaving at 15:30 for a 2.5-hour ghat drive in the dark.
That lost hour at the closed gate, plus the slower afternoon ghat, is the half day. Yatris who insist on this order should target the 13:15 reopening deliberately, eat lunch in Omkareshwar first, and accept a late return.
One day, no Bhasma pass: Order A. Omkareshwar at 08:00, Mahakal in the afternoon, Sandhya aarti, home by 21:00.
Holding a Bhasma Aarti pass: sleep in Ujjain, do the 04:00 aarti, then Omkareshwar's 13:15 window. Our Bhasma Aarti and Omkareshwar in one trip plan lays it out.
With elders: Order A, with the ₹250 Shighra Darshan at Mahakal and a wheelchair request at Omkareshwar, which the trust offers.
Two days: Omkareshwar and Maheshwar on day one, Ujjain overnight, Bhasma Aarti on day two.
Travelling on a Monday: both temples are at their heaviest; add two hours to every queue or shift to Tuesday.
Avoid planning Omkareshwar for 11:30–13:15 in either order, and avoid the Ujjain–Omkareshwar leg after dark in monsoon. Mahakal's dress and locker rules are in our Mahakaleshwar temple rules guide.
Indore is the natural base for Order A: the widest hotel choice, 55 km from Ujjain and 77 km from Omkareshwar, with the airport on the right side of town.
For a Bhasma Aarti pass, stay in Ujjain within walking distance of the Mahakal Lok corridor the night before; Monday and Sawan rooms go weeks ahead.
A night in Omkareshwar suits only those who want the 04:30 mangal aarti.
Visit the temple that closes while the morning is yours, and the one that never closes when the afternoon is. Har Har Mahadev, Jai Shri Mahakal.
