Three days from Indore is enough for both Jyotirlingas and Maheshwar without a rushed hour: about 370 km in all, with night halts in Ujjain and Omkareshwar. Day 1 is Mahakaleshwar and Ujjain's temples, Day 2 is Omkareshwar with an evening on the Narmada, and Day 3 is Maheshwar's ghats before you are back in Indore by late afternoon.
| Day | Route | Drive | Night halt |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Indore → Ujjain | about 55 km, 1 hr 15 min | Ujjain |
| 2 | Ujjain → Omkareshwar | about 140 km, 3.5 hrs | Omkareshwar |
| 3 | Omkareshwar → Maheshwar → Indore | about 65 km, then 95 km | Ends in Indore |
Each day has one temple town and one main drive. That is what keeps the yatra unhurried, even with elders in the group.
The timings below follow our 3-day package from Indore. They can shift to match your flight or train.
9:00 am — pickup at Indore airport, Indore Junction or your hotel.
10:15 am — reach Ujjain and check in.
11:30 am — Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga darshan, then Mahakal Lok. Allow about 2 hours.
3:00 pm — Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath and Sandipani Ashram, each about 5 to 7 km from Mahakaleshwar.
5:30 pm — Harsiddhi Mata Temple, about 0.5 km from Mahakaleshwar.
6:30 pm — evening aarti at Ram Ghat on the Shipra, then back to the hotel.
On an ordinary weekday the free darshan queue takes 30 minutes to about 3 hours. Sheeghra Darshan, the faster lane, costs ₹250 per person.
Mondays are far heavier, so avoid starting this trip on a Monday if you can. Gates, lockers and the walk in are covered in our Mahakaleshwar logistics guide.
Before dawn (optional) — Bhasma Aarti, 4 to 6 am, for pass holders only. Slots open about 30 days ahead; see our Bhasma Aarti booking guide.
7:30 am — leave Ujjain. The drive is about 140 km, roughly 3.5 hours, by the Indore highway.
11:00 am — reach Omkareshwar and check in.
12:00 pm — Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga darshan on Mandhata island.
3:30 pm — Mamleshwar Temple on the south bank, after lunch and a short rest.
5:00 pm — evening on the Narmada ghat.
You reach the island on foot or by boat. The Mamleshwar Setu, 235 m long, leads to the main temple gate, and an older 200 m footbridge also crosses the river. There are steps at the ghat and up to the temple.
From the ghat you can also see the 108-foot statue of Adi Shankaracharya on the hill. More on the road itself is in our Ujjain to Omkareshwar guide.
The two-day plan covers both Jyotirlingas. What it cannot give you is time at Omkareshwar.
| 2-day plan | 3-day plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Time in Omkareshwar | About 4 hours, 10 am to 2 pm | 11 am until 8 am next morning |
| Evening Shringar Aarti, 8:30 pm | Missed | Yes |
| Darshan at 5 am opening | No | Possible before checkout |
| Maheshwar | No | Half a day |
| Back in Indore | About 4:15 pm on Day 2 | About 4:30 pm on Day 3 |
The temple's own timetable shows why the evening matters:
Darshan runs from 5:00 am to 9:30 pm.
Shringar Darshan is from 4:30 to 8:30 pm.
Shringar Aarti is from 8:30 to 9:00 pm, followed by Shayan Darshan till 9:30 pm.
Darshan pauses during the aarti and shringar.
Koti Tirth Ghat lies directly in front of the main temple. On Mondays the Somwar Sawari leaves the temple at 4 pm and comes down to this ghat.
8:00 am — check out and leave Omkareshwar. Maheshwar is about 65 km, roughly 1.5 hours.
9:30 am — Ahilya Ghat, Ahilyeshwar Temple and Rajrajeshwar Temple. Allow about 2.5 hours.
1:00 pm — drive to Indore, about 95 km, roughly 2.5 hours.
3:30 pm — Khajrana Ganesh Temple in Indore, only if time allows.
4:30 pm — drop at Indore airport, Indore Junction or your hotel.
Maheshwar is a temple town on the Narmada, shaped by Ahilyabai Holkar. Its temples sit inside the fort complex by the river, a short walk apart.
Ahilyeshwar Temple is reached by stairs down from the fort, and Rajrajeshwar, known for its ever-burning lamps, is a minute away. Both are listed as open from about 6 am to 8 pm, with no entry fee.
Tell the driver your departure time that morning. For a flight or train out of Indore, book one that leaves after about 7 pm.
With elders: the 3-day plan. Omkareshwar and Maheshwar both have many steps, and Day 2 has an afternoon rest built in.
On a tight schedule: the 2-day plan for both Jyotirlingas, back in Indore on the second afternoon.
With a Bhasma Aarti pass: book it for the Day 2 morning. The 7:30 am departure still holds.
By bus: Ujjain to Omkareshwar needs a change at Indore and takes 5 to 6 hours, which makes three days tight.
What to avoid:
A Monday for Day 1, when the Mahakaleshwar queue is longest.
A return flight before 7 pm on Day 3.
Diwali is on 8 November 2026; Kartik Purnima falls on 24 November 2026. Expect fuller ghats and hotels around both.
November nights are about 16°C; December and January nights about 11–13°C. Carry a shawl for the evening aarti by the river.
Not part of the package: hotels, meals, darshan passes, pooja charges and boat tickets at Omkareshwar.
Night 1, Ujjain: stay within about 1 km of Mahakaleshwar. With a Bhasma Aarti pass you must be at the gate by 2:30 am, so the short distance matters.
Night 2, Omkareshwar: stay close to the ghat and the bridge, so the 8:30 pm aarti and a 5 am darshan are both a walk.
Omkareshwar has dharamshalas and only a handful of hotels, so book early for weekends and Purnima. You choose and book both hotels yourself; the driver's stay is taken care of.
Two Jyotirlingas, the Shipra and the Narmada, and a quiet morning at Maheshwar — three days well spent. Har Har Mahadev, Narmade Har.
