Yes, a Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar and darshan at Omkareshwar fit into one 2-day trip from Indore. Book the pass for the morning of Day 2, the dawn after your night in Ujjain. The aarti ends at about 6 AM, and the 140 km drive to Omkareshwar starts straight after it.
The Bhasma Aarti happens once a day, before sunrise, from about 4 AM to 6 AM. Pass holders are asked to reach the temple by about 2:30 AM. Nobody can do that on the morning they land in Indore, 55 km away.
So the order of the trip decides the date on your pass:
Day 1: Indore to Ujjain, regular darshan, the other Ujjain temples, night in Ujjain.
Day 2, before dawn: Bhasma Aarti. Then Omkareshwar, then back to Indore.
Travelling on 14 and 15 November? Your pass date is 15 November. Booking it for the 14th is the most common slip, and the portal says the amount is non-refundable.
The rule changed in April 2026. The temple closed its offline permit counter from 9 April, so there is no slip to queue for on arrival any more. Every pass now comes from the official portal, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in, which lists two options.
| Advance Bhasma Aarti | Tatkal Bhasma Aarti | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens | On the 1st, for the whole of next month | 8 AM, one day before the aarti |
| How it works | You place a request; a payment link comes by SMS if it is approved | First come, first served |
| Quota | Not published | About 300 a day, as reported in April 2026 |
| Fee | About ₹200 per person | ₹200 per person |
The portal states plainly that an advance request does not guarantee a booking. It also limits each mobile number or Aadhaar to three requests. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide walks through each step.
Once the pass is confirmed, tell us when you book the car. The driver then takes you to the temple before dawn on Day 2. This is how the morning usually runs:
About 2:00 AM: wake up and bathe. Men wear a dhoti, women a saree.
About 2:30 AM: reach the gate printed on your pass, with the printout and the original photo ID used for booking.
Before entry: phones and bags go into the cloakroom. Keep the token.
About 4:00 AM: the aarti begins. You sit on the floor for close to two hours.
About 6:00 AM: the aarti ends, and you are outside within about 15 minutes.
6:15 to 7:30 AM: back to the hotel, change, tea, check out.
Take a shawl, because Ujjain is cold before dawn from November to January. Sleep early on Day 1, even if it means watching less of the evening aarti at Ram Ghat.
Without a pass, the 2-day package leaves Ujjain at 6:30 AM. With the aarti attended, departure moves to about 7:30 AM. The road is about 140 km through Indore and takes about 3.5 hours, so you reach Omkareshwar at about 11 AM.
That arrival time matters. By the temple trust's schedule, morning darshan at Omkareshwar runs from 5:00 AM to 12:20 PM. The temple then pauses for the midday bhog until 1:15 PM.
Short queue at 11 AM: cross the bridge and take darshan first.
Long queue: visit Mamleshwar on the south bank first, then cross for Omkareshwar after 1:15 PM.
Either way you will have been awake since 2 AM, so sleep in the car. Our Ujjain to Omkareshwar route guide covers the road itself. The drop in Indore also moves later than the usual 4:15 PM, so book an evening train or flight.
Many Yatris do not get a pass, and the trip still works. Nothing in the plan depends on it.
Try tatkal at 8 AM on Day 1, as described above.
Take regular darshan on Day 1. The walk-through darshan of Mahakaleshwar is free, and the plan gives it about two hours.
Buy Sheeghra Darshan if the free line is long. It costs about ₹250 per person, and the portal sells it in 90-minute slots between 6 AM and 6 PM.
Book a seat at the Sandhya or Shayan Aarti. Since April 2026 both are on the portal at ₹250 per person. Sandhya booking opens at 12 noon and Shayan at 4 PM.
Day 2 then starts at the normal 6:30 AM. You reach Omkareshwar at about 10 AM, well ahead of the midday break. Never pay an agent who promises a guaranteed pass, because the temple issues passes only through its own portal.
With elders: two hours on the floor after a 2 AM start is hard. Choose a seated Sandhya Aarti on Day 1 and keep the 6:30 AM start.
On a tight schedule: hold the pass before you book trains or flights. Without it, plan for regular darshan and keep the afternoon return.
Travelling near Diwali or Kartik Purnima: Diwali is on 8 November 2026 and Kartik Purnima on 24 November. Expect those weeks to fill first, so send the advance request on the 1st.
Want an easier pace: add a day and attend the aarti with no long drive after it.

For a Bhasma Aarti morning, distance to the temple matters more than anything else about the room. Stay within about 1 km of Mahakaleshwar, so the 2:30 AM trip takes minutes.
Ask the hotel two things before you pay: whether the reception is staffed at 2 AM, and whether hot water runs that early. Our Mahakaleshwar logistics guide explains the gates and the cloakroom.
Two Jyotirlingas, one ash-smeared dawn and one car for the whole road. Har Har Mahadev.
