Omkareshwar's sanctum opens at 5 am and shuts for the night after the 9:30 pm Shayan aarti, but it also closes twice during the day. For a Yatri driving 80 km from Indore, those gaps decide whether you walk straight in or wait an hour at the bridge.
Here is the full timetable, the paid and free queues, and why Mamleshwar across the river is half the darshan.
The Shri Omkareshwar Mandir Trust publishes the timetable below. Timings move on festival days and through Shravan, so confirm on the day, especially the evening slot, which older notices still list half an hour earlier.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 4:30–5:00 am | Mangal aarti and bhog, sanctum closed |
| 5:00 am–12:20 pm | Morning darshan |
| 12:25–1:15 pm | Midday bhog, sanctum closed |
| 1:15–4:00 pm | Afternoon darshan |
| 4:00–4:30 pm | Evening shringar, sanctum closed |
| 4:30–9:30 pm | Shringar darshan |
| 9:30 pm | Shayan aarti |
| 10:00–10:30 pm | Shayan darshan, then closed |
Jalabhishek in the sabhamandap runs 6 am to 4 pm only; water is never offered after sunset. Inside the garbhagriha only darshan and a water offering are allowed, and touching the Shivling is prohibited.
On weekdays the free darshan is one ordinary queue; on Saturdays and Sundays the trust issues free timed-slot tokens, from 5–7 am through to a 9:00–9:40 pm slot. Mondays and festival days run longest.
Shighra darshan costs ₹300 per person, booked online for a two-hour slot on the same day. You need the ticket and Aadhaar, and you collect a wristband at the Brahmapuri parking centre. It is non-refundable.
If you want to perform rather than watch, the trust books abhisheks a day ahead:
Jalabhishek: ₹2,100 for two people, about 30 minutes, includes Shighra darshan.
Panchamrit abhishek: ₹5,100.
Laghu Rudrabhishek: ₹21,000.
Every Monday at 4 pm the Somwar Sawari leaves the temple for Kotitirth Ghat. If you are there on a Monday, finish darshan before it starts.
Tradition holds that Shiva split the linga into two: Omkareshwar on the island and Amareshwar, called Mamleshwar, on the south bank. Many Yatris count the Jyotirlinga darshan complete only after both. Mamleshwar's walls carry inscriptions dated 1063 AD, and the temple is run by the Ahilyabai Khasgi Trust.
It opens from about 5 am to around 9 pm, with free entry. From Omkareshwar's gate it is under a kilometre, about 10 minutes on foot across the river.
Most Yatris take Omkareshwar darshan first, cross back and finish at Mamleshwar before lunch. On the overnight plan reverse it: Shringar darshan in the evening, then Mamleshwar at 6 am before the drive home, when the south bank is empty.
Two bridges link the town to the island. The Mamleshwar Setu, a 235-metre suspension bridge from 2004, lands at the main temple gate and is the normal entry. The older 1979 cantilever bridge takes the load on heavy days, when entry shifts to JP Chowk.
The suspension bridge was closed for repairs in June 2026 after a cable clasp loosened; check which bridge is open on the day. Boats also cross from the ghats, with fares starting around ₹75 a person on a shared boat. Private boats cost more and are banned whenever the dam gates are open.
Every evening a Narmada aarti is performed at Kotitirth Ghat around sunset, roughly 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Watching is free; you book only to perform it.
The temple lists Indore airport at 77 km; by road it is 80 km and 2 to 2.5 hours via Khandwa Road through Simrol, Choral, Barwaha and Mortakka. On Shravan Mondays and Shivratri the diversions at Sanawad stretch it to about 4 hours. Our Indore to Omkareshwar distance, bus, taxi and train guide compares the options.
A helicopter service also links Indore, Ujjain and Omkareshwar in 20 to 40 minutes when it operates; check availability before counting on it. Omkareshwar Road station at Mortakka is 12 km away. Official parking grounds include the New Bus Stand (300+ cars), Brahmapuri (300+) and Kuber Bhandari (250+); vehicles are kept out of town on festival days.
Two things worth adding if you have the time: the 7 km Omkar Parvat parikrama, which our parikrama route plan covers, and the 108-foot Adi Shankaracharya statue on Mandhata hill, free to visit.
Day trip from Indore: leave by 5 am, darshan by 8, Mamleshwar by 9:30, back on the road by 11. You miss the Shayan aarti.
Overnight: reach by 4:30 pm, Shringar darshan, Narmada aarti, Shayan aarti at 9:30 pm, Mamleshwar at 6 am. The fullest version.
With elderly parents: book Shighra darshan and arrive after 4:30 pm when the sun is off the bridge.
Avoid: the 12:20 pm arrival, Mondays after 3 pm, and the Kartik Mela week from 20 to 24 November 2026, unless the mela is the point. Our Kartik Purnima snan and darshan plan covers that week.
Sleep in Omkareshwar only if you want the Shayan aarti; the dharamshalas and small hotels near the New Bus Stand and Brahmapuri are a short walk from the bridge. Otherwise most Yatris return to Indore or go on to Ujjain the same evening. Narmada Jayanti falls on 13 February 2027, when rooms go early.
Both halves of the linga, one river between them. Har Har Mahadev.
