Indore to Omkareshwar is about 77 km by road, 2 to 2.5 hours on the Khandwa Road through the Choral ghat. There is no train: the Omkareshwar Road line has been shut for gauge conversion since January 2023, targeted for 2028. Your real choices are the Sarwate bus, from about ₹120, or a taxi.
From the city centre it is 77 to 82 km depending on where you start, and from the airport about 79 km. The road is the Khandwa Road out of Indore, numbered NH-347BG on most maps, running Rau → Simrol → Choral → Barwaha → Mortakka → Omkareshwar.
The Choral ghat section between Simrol and Barwaha is the slow part: winding, two-lane and busy with trucks. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours door to door on a normal day, and the aggregator "59 km" you see on bus sites measures only to Mortakka.
What stretches the drive:
Sawan Mondays, Mahashivratri and Narmada Jayanti, when diversions before Mortakka add an hour or more.
Weekend mornings after 08:00, when Indore day-trippers fill the ghat.
Monsoon, when the ghat sees landslips and the bridge approach floods on bad days.
Private operators run Indore–Omkareshwar all day from Sarwate bus stand, with 36 or more departures listed on booking sites.

Omkareshwar Road station, at Mortakka 12 km from the temple, sat on the Indore–Mhow–Khandwa metre-gauge line. The last passenger ran on 30 January 2023 and the line closed for gauge conversion.
Progress since then:
Khandwa–Sanawad broad gauge opened with a MEMU in March 2024, now two trips a day at ₹15.
Omkareshwar Road's rebuilt station had its electronic interlocking commissioned on 13 August 2026, after the safety commissioner's inspection, but no passenger timetable has been announced.
The full Indore–Khandwa section is targeted for 31 March 2028, with 19 tunnels through the Vindhya ghat.
Until then, the only train anywhere near the temple is the Khandwa MEMU to Sanawad. Our Khandwa station to Omkareshwar same-day plan covers that route.
A private car does the run in about 2 hours, and from the airport in roughly 2 hours 25 minutes. Aggregators quote one-way airport transfers from about ₹1,200 plus taxes; a day return with waiting is priced on top.
The taxi is worth it when:
You want the 05:00 darshan window. No bus leaves Indore before dawn.
You are a family or carry elders. The bus drops you at the Omkareshwar stand, a 10–15 minute walk to the ghat with luggage.
You are adding Maheshwar or Mandu on the way back; the bus cannot.
It is a festival day, when the driver knows the Mortakka diversions the bus must sit through.

The Shri Omkareshwar Temple Trust's daily schedule:
04:30–05:00 Mangal aarti and bhog; darshan from 05:00
12:20–13:15 Madhyanha bhog, closed
13:15–16:00 afternoon darshan
16:00–16:30 Sayamkalin shringar, closed
16:30–21:30 shringar darshan; 21:30–22:00 shayan aarti
Normal darshan is free. On Saturdays and Sundays the trust issues free timed tokens online, booked in advance, not same-day; arrive ten minutes before your slot. On weekdays you simply join the queue.
An optional paid Shighra Darshan slot is sold on the trust's site, valid only for the slot booked. Mamleshwar is about 1 km across the bridge, and the Omkar parvat parikrama is 7 km.
Alone, budget, no fixed time: Sarwate bus, ₹120–190, 2.5 hours. Take the 06:00 to beat the bhog closure.
Family or elders: taxi, door to ghat, luggage in the boot.
Landing at Indore airport: taxi straight from arrivals; the airport is on the Omkareshwar side of the city.
Combining with Mahakal: do Omkareshwar first and Ujjain the same afternoon, since Mahakal has no midday break; our Omkareshwar from Ujjain day plan shows the reverse.
Avoid "train to Omkareshwar" listings on ticket apps; they point at a station with no trains.
Most Indore Yatris do Omkareshwar as a day trip. Stay the night only if you want the 04:30 mangal aarti or the 21:30 shayan aarti; rooms sit near the bus stand and the new bridge and fill early for Sawan and weekends. Otherwise sleep in Indore, which has the wider choice, and leave by 06:00.
Leave early, respect the ghat and the 12:20 closure, and Omkareshwar is an easy day from Indore. Har Har Mahadev.
