Omkareshwar is a comfortable same-day trip from Indore. The Jyotirlinga is about 80 km away, the drive takes about 2 hours 15 minutes each way, and a 6:30 AM start brings you back by about 3:45 PM. That leaves time for both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar, the Narmada ghat and lunch.
This is the clock our Indore to Omkareshwar same-day package follows. It moves to match your train or flight.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:30 AM | Pickup in Indore |

| 9:00 AM | Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga darshan |
| 11:00 AM | Mamleshwar Temple |
| 11:45 AM | Time at the Narmada ghat |
| 12:30 PM | Lunch |
| 1:30 PM | Drive back to Indore |
| 3:45 PM | Drop at hotel, station or airport |
Pickup to drop is a little over 9 hours, and the round trip is about 160 km. On an ordinary day, keep 2 to 2.5 hours for the two temples together.
The road runs south from Indore on the Khandwa highway. Most of it is easy, but the middle stretch climbs down through the Choral and Bherughat hill sections, where the old road is narrow and winding.
A new four-lane road with three tunnels is being built on this stretch. Until it is fully open, plan on 2 hours 15 minutes to 2.5 hours each way, and more behind slow trucks.
Two things make the drive easier:
Leave by 6:30 AM. The hill section is far quieter early in the morning.
Carry water and a light snack. The first proper halt is Omkareshwar itself.
The car parks on the south bank. From there you walk to the ghats and the bridge.
The Jyotirlinga stands on Mandhata island in the middle of the Narmada. There are three ways across:
Mamleshwar Setu (Jhula Pul): a footbridge built in 2004, 235 metres long and 4 metres wide. It leads directly to the main temple gate and is open all year.
The old bridge: a 200-metre footbridge opened in 1979. Before it, boats were the only way to reach the temple.
Boat from the ghat: a short crossing with the ticket paid at the ghat. Ask the fare before you step in.
The bridge is the steadier choice for elders and small children. The boat adds a view of the temple from the water, but you climb ghat steps at both ends.
The temple trust publishes this daily schedule:
| Time | Darshan |
|---|---|
| 4:30 – 5:00 AM | Mangal Aarti and bhog — no darshan |
| 5:00 AM – 12:20 PM | Mangal darshan |
| 12:20 – 1:15 PM | Madhyanha bhog — no darshan |
| 1:15 – 4:00 PM | Afternoon darshan |
| 4:00 – 4:30 PM | Evening shringar — no darshan |
| 4:30 PM onwards | Shringar darshan until the night aarti |
General darshan is free. The trust also runs a paid Shighra Darshan booked on its website, in four slots: 7–9 AM, 10 AM–12 PM, 2–4 PM and 6–8 PM. Know these rules before you book:
Carry the ticket and your Aadhaar card.
Tickets are not issued for children under 12.
A wristband is collected at the Brahmapuri parking centre, on the booked date only.
Ticket holders are told to use the bridge, not the boat route.
After Omkareshwar, cross back to the south bank for Mamleshwar Temple. Many devotees count the Jyotirlinga darshan as complete only after visiting both shrines. It stands on the same side as the car park, so it fits naturally at the end.
The queue here is usually shorter, and about 45 minutes is enough. Then walk down to the Narmada ghat. From the ghat you see the island, the bridges and the 108-foot statue of Adi Shankaracharya on the hill, unveiled in 2023.
The 7 km parikrama of the island takes 2 to 3 hours on foot. It does not fit this day plan; keep it for an overnight visit.
There are steps at three points: down to the ghats, up from the river to the temple, and inside the temple levels. None is long, but together they tire elders.
With elders: use the bridge both ways and add 45 minutes to the plan. Tell us when you book.
On a tight schedule: skip the ghat halt and leave by 12:30 PM to reach Indore by about 3:00 PM.
On a Monday or a festival day: leave Indore by 5:30 AM. Mondays, Mahashivratri and Kartik Purnima on 24 November 2026 draw the longest lines.
Catching a flight or train the same evening: on crowded days keep at least three hours between the drop and your departure.
Avoid starting after 9 AM. You reach at the midday break, darshan slips to the afternoon and the hill road is driven after dark.
This is a day trip, so most Yatris stay in Indore the night before. A hotel near Indore Junction or on the southern side of the city saves time at the 6:30 AM pickup.
Stay in Omkareshwar only if you want the 4:30 AM Mangal Aarti or the island parikrama. If Mahakaleshwar is also on your list, read our Ujjain to Omkareshwar guide and the Mahakaleshwar logistics guide before fixing dates.
One early morning is all Omkareshwar asks: a darshan on the island, a second across the river and the Narmada in between. Har Har Mahadev.
