Mahakaleshwar is why most Yatris drive from Indore to Ujjain, but the town holds a Shakti Peetha, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath and Chintaman Ganesh within 7 km of the Jyotirlinga. Leave Indore at 5 am and you can take darshan at all of them and be back for dinner.
This plan gives the order, the distances and the timings that make it work.
Ujjain is small, and the temples group themselves. Once you see the three clusters, the day plans itself and you stop criss-crossing the town.
| Temple | From Mahakal | How to get there |
|---|---|---|
| Bade Ganesh | 100 m, opposite Gate 4 | Walk |
| Harsiddhi Mata | About 500 m | Walk, 5–10 min |
| Ram Ghat (Kshipra) | About 1 km | Walk or e-rickshaw |
| Gopal Mandir | About 1.5 km | E-rickshaw |
| Kal Bhairav | About 5 km north | Taxi or auto, 15–20 min |
| Sandipani Ashram & Mangalnath | About 5–6 km north | Same loop as Kal Bhairav |
| Chintaman Ganesh | 6–7 km south-west | Taxi, on the Indore side |
The drive from Indore is about 55 km via Sanwer, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. Six-laning work continues through 2026, so expect diversions near Sanwer and Ninora and leave a little margin. Our road, rail and bus guide for the Indore–Ujjain leg covers the alternatives.
Mahakal opens around 4 am and closes around 11 pm. Without a Bhasma aarti pass, reach the general queue by 6 am; Shighra darshan costs ₹250 if the line is long. Phones, smartwatches and leather go into the lockers at Gate 4. Our Mahakal darshan timings and Bhasma aarti pass guide has the pass rules.
Walk out through Mahakal Lok, the 900-metre corridor with 108 pillars, which is free to enter. Then do the old-town cluster on foot:
Bade Ganesh, opposite Gate 4. A 15-minute stop; take darshan here first, as Yatris traditionally do before Mahakal.
Harsiddhi Mata, beside Rudra Sagar. One of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where Sati's elbow is believed to have fallen. The two tall deep-stambhs at the gate are lit with hundreds of lamps on festival evenings. Open from about 5 am, evening aarti around 7 pm.
Ram Ghat, where the Kshipra aarti is held around 6:30–7 pm. Note it for the end of the day.
Gopal Mandir, built in 1833 by Bayaji Bai Scindia. Its silver-plated doors were brought back from Ghazni by Mahadji Scindia.
This whole walk, with darshan, takes about two hours.
Kal Bhairav is the guardian deity of Ujjain, about 5 km north of Mahakal near the Kshipra. The offering here is liquor: the pujari holds a saucer to the idol's lips, and part of the bottle comes back as prasad. Buy it only from the licensed counters at the temple gate, never from touts.
The temple is open from early morning to about 10 pm, and darshan takes 20–40 minutes on an ordinary day. Saturdays and Sundays run longer. Our Kal Bhairav temple guide explains the ritual and etiquette in detail.
Sandipani Ashram is on the same road as Mangalnath, so do them together. This is where Krishna, Balram and Sudama studied under Guru Sandipani; the Gomti Kund and the old stone with numerals are what Yatris come to see. Open through the morning; a 30-minute halt is enough.
Mangalnath, on the Kshipra bank, is believed to be the birthplace of Mangal (Mars). The Bhat pooja, an offering of cooked rice on the Shivling, is done in the morning, usually between 7 am and about 3 pm. Charges are displayed at the temple itself. Tuesdays are the busiest; on a weekday morning, darshan is quick.
Chintaman Ganesh stands in Jawasya village across the Kshipra, 6–7 km south-west of Mahakal, which puts it on the Indore side of town. The sanctum holds three idols: Chintaman, Ichhaman and Siddhivinayak, with the Chintaman idol regarded as swayambhu. The carved pillars date from the Paramara period.
It is open from early morning to about 9 pm, so it works as the last stop.
A workable day looks like this:
5:00 am leave Indore, reach Mahakal before 6:30.
6:30–8:30 am Mahakal darshan, Mahakal Lok, Bade Ganesh.
8:30–10:00 am Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat, Gopal Mandir on foot, then breakfast.
10:30 am–1:00 pm Kal Bhairav, Sandipani Ashram, Mangalnath.
1:00–2:30 pm lunch and rest.
3:00–4:00 pm Chintaman Ganesh.
6:30 pm back at Ram Ghat for Kshipra aarti, or drive to Indore by 6 pm.
With elderly parents: skip Gopal Mandir and Sandipani, and take the taxi right to Harsiddhi instead of walking. Do Mangalnath and Kal Bhairav before noon when the sun is low.
On a tight schedule: Mahakal, Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Chintaman Ganesh fit in six hours door to door.
Staying for the aarti: finish Chintaman by 5 pm and return to Ram Ghat; the drive to Indore after 8 pm is quiet.
Avoid: Tuesdays at Mangalnath, weekend afternoons at Kal Bhairav, and arriving at Mahakal after 9 am on a Monday.
Most Yatris doing this loop return to Indore the same night, and that is the easiest option. If you want the Bhasma aarti next morning, sleep in Ujjain within a kilometre of Mahakal; rooms near Gate 4 and around Harsiddhi fill up weeks ahead for Kartik Purnima, which falls around 24 November 2026.
