One month in the year belongs entirely to Lord Shiva — Shravan. And every Monday of this month — the Shravani Somwar — is the holiest day of Shiva bhakti. The first Shravani Somwar carries special weight, because that is when vrat, abhishek and sankalp begin.
And when it comes to Shravani Somwar, no place matches Trimbakeshwar — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, at the foot of the Brahmagiri hill, and the source of the sacred Godavari. Lakhs of Shiva bhakts converge here that day. This guide covers the dates, the meaning, the vrat vidhi, and the special Trimbakeshwar traditions you’ll only see in Shravan.
Why Shravan belongs to Lord Shiva
The story goes back to the Samudra Manthan. When the devas and asuras churned the ocean for amrit, the first thing that emerged was halahal — a terrifying poison that could destroy all creation. To save the universe, Lord Shiva drank it himself and held it in his throat — turning it blue, giving him the name Neelkanth.
To cool the poison’s burn, the devas poured water on him. Tradition says this happened in Shravan — which is why jal-abhishek and rudrabhishek on a Shivling this month are considered supremely auspicious. That same ritual repeats every Shravani Somwar today.
Shravan 2026 — dates (both panchang)
A common source of confusion: Shravan dates aren’t the same across India. North India follows the Purnimanta panchang; Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India follow Amanta — a ~15-day offset.
For Trimbakeshwar and Nashik — both in Maharashtra — the first Shravani Somwar is 17 August 2026. Four Somwar in both panchang; the vrat and puja are the same on both sides. (Local panchang can shift dates slightly — confirm before you travel.)
Why Trimbakeshwar
Three things make Trimbakeshwar unique for Shravan:
Trimukhi Jyotirlinga: the only one of the twelve Jyotirlingas where the Shivling has three faces — Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh. Everywhere else, only Shiva sits. The swayambhu ling sits in a small hollow, water always gathered over it.
Godavari’s origin: the mandir is at the foot of the Brahmagiri hill, where the “Ganga of the South” — Godavari — begins. Kushavarta Tirtha sits right here; bhakts do snan before darshan.
Peshwa-era mandir: the current grand black-stone mandir was built by Nanasaheb Peshwa (Balaji Bajirao) in the 18th century — famous for its stone carving.
Palkhi Sohla — the unique Monday tradition
This is Trimbakeshwar’s most beautiful sight, and Shravani Somwar sees it at its full glory.
Every Monday, in the afternoon (~4 PM, usually 3:30–5), the panchamukhi mask of Lord Trimbakraj and the jewelled gold crown are placed in a palkhi and taken in procession from the main mandir to Kushavarta Tirtha. Dhols, nagaras and shehnai fill the air; bhakts lay rangolis along the path. At Kushavarta the deity is bathed in its sacred water, chandan is offered, and the puja closes with the maha-aarti. Then the palkhi returns to the mandir.
The tradition runs unbroken since Nanasaheb Peshwa’s time. The crown is said to be extremely old — brought out only on Mondays for darshan, which is why Monday darshan is considered specially fruitful.
Going to Trimbakeshwar on a Shravani Somwar? Plan to be there in the afternoon — this is an experience you won’t forget.
The other big Shravani Somwar tradition is the Brahmagiri pradakshina— locally called the “pheri”.
What it is: a full parikrama of the Brahmagiri hill — around 40 km, entirely barefoot.
When it starts: Sunday night before Shravani Somwar, or Monday pre-dawn.
Where from: Kushavarta Tirtha, after a Godavari snan and sankalp.
Who does it: thousands every year — the practice runs back decades.
In Shravan the Brahmagiri slopes turn lush green and streams start to flow — so this pradakshina is both bhakti and nature. But it is physically demanding: monsoon makes the trail slippery. If it’s your first visit, or you’re a senior or have any health issue, staying with darshan + Kushavarta snan is the wiser call.
Shravani Somwar vrat vidhi
The vrat is simple; the bhaav matters most:
Wake up early, bathe and wear clean clothes; if you can, take snan in sacred water (Kushavarta, Godavari).
Perform abhishek on the Shivling with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar (panchamrit).
Offer bel patra, white flowers, bhasma, chandan and dhatura. Bel patra is dearest to Shiva.
Chant Om Namah Shivaya; if you can, add the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
Fast through the day — many take fruits, some nirjal; one meal after sunset.
Avoid non-veg, alcohol, onion and garlic through the month.
Solah Somwar vrat: many bhakts start the “sixteen Mondays” vrat sankalp from the first Shravani Somwar — unmarried women for a suitable partner, married women for the husband’s long life and household well-being.
Special anushthans at Trimbakeshwar
Trimbakeshwar is known nationwide for its specialised rituals; Shravan sees the highest demand:
Rudrabhishek and Laghurudra
Mahamrityunjaya Jap
Narayan Nagbali
Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja
Tripindi Shraddha
These are conducted by the temple purohits and can take several hours. Slots fill fast in Shravan — book at least a week ahead.
The whole month has extra shobha
Nagpanchami and Narali Purnima bring special shringar of Lord Trimbakraj through Shravan. The mandir carries a festival atmosphere all month — abhishek, aartis and bhajans through the day.
What to expect for darshan on Shravani Somwar
Crowd: one of the year’s heaviest — darshan can take several hours. Both regular and paid-darshan queues run.
Best time: very early morning, when the mandir opens. Crowds swell fast as the day progresses.
Sanctum: the mandir has its own rules for entry and touching the ling — follow signage and volunteers. Some special pujas require traditional attire (dhoti / saree).
Kushavarta snan: tradition is snan first, darshan after.
Weather: Shravan is monsoon — carry umbrella / raincoat and non-slip footwear.
Traffic: vehicles are stopped outside the town on heavy days; walk or shuttle in from there.
Carry: valid ID, water, essential medicines; agree a meet point if you’re with family.
Nashik’s temples fill up too
Shravani Somwar isn’t just Trimbakeshwar — Nashik’s Shiva mandirs also see long queues. Kapaleshwar Mandir in Panchavati and the Someshwar Mandir are especially full; bhakts bathe at Ramkund and offer bel patra and flowers. If Trimbakeshwar’s crowd feels too much, these Nashik mandirs are a beautiful alternative for a Shravan Somwar darshan.
How to reach Trimbakeshwar
From Nashik: ~28–30 km, 40–50 min by road. Bus, shared taxi and private cab — all available.
Nearest railway station: Nashik Road, ~38–40 km.
Nearest airport: Nashik (Ozar), ~30–40 km.
On Shravani Somwar extra buses run, but the crowd is heavy — a private cab is the easiest option, especially with family or elders.
Where to stay
The best way to do Shravani Somwar darshan is to arrive a night earlier and stay over — so you catch the mandir at opening time, with lighter crowds, and comfortably watch the afternoon palkhi sohla.
Stay in Trimbakeshwar — if you plan the Brahmagiri pradakshina (starts Sunday night) or want the earliest pre-dawn darshan. But it’s a small town and rooms are limited; Shravan Mondays fill fastest.
Stay in Nashik — if Trimbakeshwar rooms are full, or you also want to fit in Kapaleshwar / Ramkund darshan. More options, easy daily commute.
TripSaffron lists verified stays in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar — real photos, real distance from the mandir, no hidden charges, free cancellation, and Marathi + Hindi support on the phone. Cabs for the day get arranged from the same place.
Rooms and cabs on all four Shravan Mondays fill fast — reserve as soon as your dates are set.
Coming from Shirdi? Combine the yatra
Many Yatris do the Shravani Somwar darshan as part of a wider Shirdi + Nashik + Trimbakeshwar circuit — Sai Baba darshan in Shirdi one day, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga the next. The Shirdi → Nashik / Trimbakeshwar taxi package covers the full leg at a fixed all-in fare, and gets you to the mandir before the crowd peaks.
