Planning to travel from Pandharpur to Shirdi — from Lord Vitthal's town to the home of Sai Baba? It is one of Maharashtra's most popular pilgrim pairings, and the journey is straightforward once you know the facts.
The short version: the road distance is about 265–270 km, roughly 5–6 hours. There is a direct train, but it runs only three days a week and takes longer. For most Yatris, road — taxi or bus — is the faster and more flexible choice.
By road — about 265–270 km, roughly 5–6 hours. A clear run can be a little under five.
By rail — about 349 km, around 7 to 7.5 hours, because the line loops via Kurduvadi and Daund.
That gap is the whole story. The railway covers far more ground than the road, so the train is not the quick option here.
Shirdi's own station is Sainagar Shirdi (SNSI). The town is also served by Kopargaon (about 22 km), Nagarsol (about 50 km) and Manmad Junction (about 60 km) — the same railheads covered in our guide to reaching Shirdi from Nagarsol.
The road route runs about 265–270 km, typically via Kurduvadi or Tembhurni and then Ahmednagar, before reaching Shirdi on the Ahmednagar–Manmad highway. Expect roughly 5–6 hours with a break or two.
A private taxi goes door to door on your timing, which is a real advantage over a long-distance train and especially helpful with elderly travellers, children or luggage. As a rough market guide for the one-way distance, a sedan tends to run in the region of ₹4,500–6,000, with SUVs and an Innova costing more; a round trip is priced higher. Always confirm the exact fare before you set off, and note that rates climb during Ekadashi and peak season.
Self-driving is comfortable too — the roads are decent and there are no major ghats on this route.
The direct train is the 11001 / 11002 Sainagar Shirdi–Pandharpur Express. In the Pandharpur-to-Shirdi direction it runs as 11002.
It runs three days a week in each direction.
It covers about 349 km in roughly 7 to 7.5 hours.
It arrives at Sainagar Shirdi (SNSI) — the closest station to the Samadhi Mandir.
Timings and running days change from time to time, so check IRCTC or a live-train app before you plan around it.
On days the direct train doesn't run, a rail journey means going via Kurduvadi Junction with a change of train, which pushes the total past eight hours. That is why the road is the more sensible choice for a routine trip — take the direct train only when its schedule genuinely suits you and you would prefer the sleeper comfort.
MSRTC runs buses on this route, generally via Ahmednagar, taking about 5–6 hours. Ordinary and semi-luxury services are inexpensive, and more comfortable Shivshahi (AC) buses run on the busier corridors. Buses are a good budget option, though a taxi is quicker and more direct.
During the Ashadhi and Kartiki wari, extra services run to and from Pandharpur — but demand is enormous, so plan ahead.

Fastest, door to door, or travelling with family and elders — a private taxi.
On a budget and happy with a longer ride — an MSRTC bus via Ahmednagar.
You prefer the train and your date matches — the tri-weekly 11002 Express to Sainagar Shirdi.
Avoid the via-Kurduvadi transfer on non-direct days. The road is faster.
October to March are the pleasant months, and ideal for the road journey.
Start early to reach Shirdi in time for a calm darshan. The Samadhi Mandir is busiest in the evenings and on Thursdays.
If you are combining both pilgrimages, remember Pandharpur is overwhelmingly crowded during Ashadhi Ekadashi in June–July and Kartiki in October–November. Book transport and stay well in advance.
Carry some cash for tolls, food stops and autos.
Travelling the other way instead? The same route in reverse is covered in our Shirdi to Pandharpur guide.
Shirdi is a good base for more darshan. Grishneshwar and Trimbakeshwar are each about 110 km away, and Shani Shingnapur is a short hop of around 65–70 km. Many Yatris plan Vitthal at Pandharpur, Sai Baba at Shirdi and one or two Jyotirlingas near Shirdi in a single circuit.
Pandharpur to Shirdi is an easy journey once you know that the road — about 267 km in 5–6 hours — beats the railway's 349 km and 7.5 hours for most people, and that the only direct train runs three days a week. Take a taxi for comfort and flexibility, a bus to save money, or the 11002 Express if its schedule fits. Set out early for a peaceful darshan.
Jai Vitthal. Om Sai Ram.
