Rajkot is the nearest big arrival point for the Dwarka–Somnath circuit: Hirasar airport, Rajkot Junction, and a highway running out to each coast. From here the whole yatra — Dwarkadhish, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, Bet Dwarka and Somnath — fits into three days and two nights, about 700 km of driving spread sensibly.
This plan gives the order, the timings, and the two mistakes that cost Yatris a darshan.
Rajkot sits in the middle of Saurashtra, so the circuit is a triangle: west to Dwarka, down the coast to Somnath, and back up through Junagadh. Every leg is a highway drive, and none of them needs a night journey.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Rajkot → Dwarka (via Jamnagar, Khambhalia) | about 225 km | 4.5–5 hrs |
| Dwarka → Nageshwar Jyotirlinga | about 17 km | 25 min |
| Nageshwar → Bet Dwarka (over Sudarshan Setu) | about 15 km | 30 min |
| Dwarka → Somnath (via Porbandar) | about 233 km | 4–5 hrs |
| Somnath → Rajkot (via Junagadh, Jetpur) | about 190 km | 3.5–4 hrs |
If you fly in, note that Hirasar airport is about 30 km outside Rajkot on the Ahmedabad highway. IndiGo and Air India connect it with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Add an hour before any plan that starts at the airport.
Dwarkadhish Temple opens at 6:30 am with Mangla Aarti and closes from 1 pm to 5 pm. Evening darshan runs 5 pm to 9:30 pm. Our Dwarkadhish timings guide at /blog/ahmedabad/dwarkadhish-darshan-timings-from-ahmedabad has the full schedule; here is what matters for a Rajkot start.
7:00 am — leave Rajkot. The Jamnagar–Khambhalia road is good; tea halt at Khambhalia.
11:30 am to 12 noon — reach Dwarka, straight to the mandir for Shringar and Rajbhog darshan before the 1 pm close.
1 pm to 5 pm — check in, lunch, Gomti Ghat at the foot of the mandir steps.
5:00 pm — Utthapan darshan when the doors reopen.
7:30 pm — Sandhya Aarti, the day's main aarti. 8:30 pm — Shayan Aarti, then the mandir closes.
Watch the shikhar during the day: the 52-yard dhwaja is changed five times, three times in the morning and twice in the evening. Sponsoring a flag has a waiting list of a year or more, so do not plan a trip around it.
Start with Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, 17 km out on the Okha road. It opens at 6 am, and the 25-metre Shiva statue in the courtyard is lit beautifully at that hour. Abhishek in the garbhagriha is booked through the temple trust, so ask the day before if you want it.
Then continue to Okha and cross the Sudarshan Setu, the 2.32 km cable-stayed bridge opened in February 2024. Bet Dwarka no longer needs a boat, though ferries still run from about 6 am to 6 pm if you want the old way.
The island temple closes for the afternoon, so be there before noon. Our one-day Dwarka post at /blog/dwarka/dwarka-one-day-nageshwar-bet-dwarka covers this loop in detail.
Be back in the car by 1 pm. The coast road through Porbandar is the long leg of the yatra, about 233 km and 4 to 5 hours with one stop.
Reach Somnath by 6 pm, drop bags, and walk to the mandir for the 7 pm Sandhya Aarti. The light and sound show follows at about 8 pm, except in the monsoon months.
Somnath opens at 6 am and the first aarti is at 7 am. Weekend mornings fill quickly, so be at the gate by 6:30. General darshan is free; a paid VIP pass exists for the queue. Phones, bags and wallets go into the lockers outside — only a small purse is allowed in.
6:30 am — darshan and 7 am aarti at the Jyotirlinga.
8:00 am — walk to Triveni Sangam, 1 km away, where the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati meet the sea.
9:00 am — Bhalka Tirth, where Shri Krishna was struck by the hunter's arrow, and the Gita Mandir at Dehotsarg.
11:00 am — leave for Rajkot. Lunch at Junagadh or Jetpur.
3:00 to 4:00 pm — reach Rajkot, in time for evening trains and flights from Hirasar.
Our Somnath darshan guide at /blog/ahmedabad/somnath-darshan-timings-guide-from-ahmedabad has the aarti schedule and dress rules in full.
Trains do exist, but they split the circuit. The 22957 Somnath Express leaves Rajkot at about 1:45 am and reaches Veraval around 5:45 am, and Veraval station is 7 km from the mandir. The 19251 Somnath–Okha Express passes Rajkot around 3:18 am and takes roughly five hours to Dwarka.
Buses are plentiful — over 90 a day Rajkot to Dwarka — but take 5 to 6 hours and leave you without transport at Nageshwar and Okha.
With elderly parents — taxi, two nights. The 1 am train departures and the Okha connection are what tire them, not the darshan.
On a budget — overnight train to Veraval, Somnath first, then GSRTC bus to Dwarka and a local auto for Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka. Add a day.
On a tight schedule — taxi from Hirasar directly to Dwarka, skip Bet Dwarka, and you can be back for a late flight on day 3.
Avoid — arriving in Dwarka after 1 pm with a return the next morning. You lose Rajbhog, and the mandir is shut until 5 pm.
In Dwarka, stay within walking distance of the mandir so the 6:30 am Mangla Aarti is a stroll, not a drive. In Somnath, the Shree Somnath Trust runs guest houses — Lilavati, Sagar Darshan and Maheshwari — a few minutes from the gate, with simple non-AC rooms from around ₹400–600 and AC rooms from about ₹900.
November to February is peak season for the whole circuit. The Kartik Purnima week, 21–24 November 2026, sells out in Somnath weeks ahead, so fix dates early if your yatra falls then.
Three days, four temples, one driver — that is the Rajkot yatra at its simplest. Jai Dwarkadhish, Har Har Mahadev.
