Chintaman Ganesh sits about 7 km south-west of Ujjain Junction in the village of Chintaman Jawasiya, across the Shipra, and opens roughly from 5 AM to 10 PM. Wednesday is Ganesh's day and the one day the queue runs long; an early weekday morning darshan takes under half an hour.
This guide gives the aarti schedule, the auto and taxi options from the station and Mahakal, the dates that fill the temple, and how to fold it into a Ujjain darshan day.
The sanctum holds three idols side by side, and the name belongs to the first of them. Chintaman removes worries, Ichchhaman fulfils wishes, and Siddhivinayak grants siddhi. Devotees hold the main idol to be swayambhu, self-manifested rather than carved.
The legend ties the temple to the Ramayana. Rama and Sita are said to have installed Chintaman during their exile, and Lakshmana the other two. Inside the complex is Lakshman Bawdi, a stepwell where Lakshmana is said to have shot an arrow into the ground to bring water for a thirsty Sita.
The stone is older than most of Ujjain's shrines. The carved sandstone pillars of the sabha mandap date to the Paramara period, roughly the 9th to 13th century, and the structure was restored under the Marathas. The medieval text Prabandha Chintamani mentions the temple, which is why historians count it among the city's oldest living shrines.
Listings for this temple disagree more than they should. Most sources, including the temple's own listing, give 5 AM to 10 PM; a few say 6 AM to 9:30 PM. Nobody reports an afternoon closure, so a midday visit is possible, but confirm the day's hours with the pujari if you are cutting it fine.

| Afternoon aarti | 4:00–4:30 PM |
| Sandhya aarti | 7:00–8:00 PM |

The temple is about 7 km from Ujjain Junction and 6–7 km from Mahakaleshwar, a drive of 18–22 minutes on the road towards Fatehabad. Reserved autos quote roughly ₹100–200 one way, more at night or on a Wednesday.
Shared autos and city buses leave from the station side, but they stop short of the gate and are slow with luggage.
There is a railway halt named Chintaman Ganesh (code CNN) on the Ujjain–Fatehabad line. It reopened in 2021 after gauge conversion, but almost no trains stop there, so do not plan around it. The temple has a shoe stand, parking, drinking water and a prasad counter.
Watch the road works. The 48 km Indore–Ujjain greenfield corridor, started in June 2026, ends at the Simhastha bypass beside this temple. Expect construction traffic on this side of town through 2028.
Do not confuse it with the Chintaharan Ganesh near Kanthal Chowk in the old city. That is a different temple; Jawasiya is the one with the three idols and the bawdi.
Beyond ordinary Wednesdays, a handful of dates turn the courtyard into a mela. The biggest is Ganeshotsav in September, when the idol gets a different shringar on each of ten days and a sava lakh (1.25 lakh) laddoo bhog is offered. In 2026 that ran from Ganesh Chaturthi on 14 September to Anant Chaturdashi on 25 September.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| Thu 29 Oct 2026 | Sankashti Chaturthi, same day as Karwa Chauth |
| Fri 27 Nov 2026 | Sankashti Chaturthi |
| 26–27 Dec 2026 | Sankashti Chaturthi; panchangs differ on the day, check locally |
| Wed 10 Feb 2027 | Ganesh Jayanti (Magh Shukla Chaturthi), doubly busy as it falls on a Wednesday |
| Late Mar–Apr 2027 | Every Wednesday of Chaitra: weekly fair, farmers offer the first rabi harvest |
Darshan is free and runs in a single general queue. We found no paid or VIP counter here, so there is no shortcut to buy on a crowded day. Arrive early or come on another day.
This is the ritual the temple is famous for. After darshan, Yatris go to the rear wall or the pillars and draw a swastika upside down, placing a wish in front of Ganesh. When the wish is granted, they return and draw it the right way up beside the first one. The walls carry thousands of both.
Some Yatris also tie a mannat thread beside their swastika, promising milk, curd, rice or a coconut when the wish comes true, and bring that same item on the return visit. Nobody checks; it is between the Yatri and the deity.
What to carry is simple:
Durva grass, the standard Ganesh offering.
Modak or besan laddoo, sold at the stalls outside the outer gate.
A small coconut if you are placing a mannat.
Dress modestly and leave footwear at the stand. We found no written photography rule, so ask before taking pictures inside the sanctum.
Chintaman lies on the opposite side of town from the Kal Bhairav cluster, so the order matters. From Mahakal it is roughly 5.5 km to Kal Bhairav, 6 km to Mangalnath, 5 km to Gadkalika and the Bhartrihari caves, and 7 km to Chintaman.
Between trains, 2–3 hours: station to Chintaman and back only. Skip it on a Wednesday.
With elders: go first thing on a weekday, when the courtyard is empty and the car can wait at the gate. The bawdi has steps; the sanctum does not.
Full local darshan day: Kal Bhairav, Siddhavat and Mangalnath in the morning, Chintaman after lunch, then Gadkalika and the caves. Our Kal Bhairav guide and Mangalnath timings cover those stops.
Tuesday or Wednesday traveller: Mangalnath is busiest on Tuesdays and Chintaman on Wednesdays, so swap the order to visit each on its quiet day.
Avoid Wednesday midday, when the queue meets the heat and the Fatehabad road fills with buses. For the wider loop, see our one-day circuit beyond Mahakal.

There is nothing to stay in at Chintaman Jawasiya itself; it is a village with a temple. Stay near Mahakaleshwar and drive out, which also keeps you close to the Bhasma aarti if you have a pass.
Dharamshalas and ashrams near Mahakal run roughly ₹100–600 a night.
Basic hotels within a kilometre of the temple start around ₹500–1,200.
Mid-range rooms such as those near Freeganj and the Dewas road run about ₹2,000–3,500.
Book well ahead for Shravan, Mahashivratri and any Monday, when Mahakal's crowd empties every room in town.
Draw your swastika, offer the laddoo and let Chintaman carry the worry. Ganpati Bappa Morya.
