Mangalnath temple sits on the Shipra bank about 6 km from Ujjain Junction, a 15-minute auto, and opens from roughly 5 am with aarti at dawn and around 7 pm.
The Bhat Pooja most Yatris come for runs between about 7 am and 3 pm, takes 30 to 60 minutes, and is booked at the temple office.
The Matsya Purana names Ujjain as the birthplace of Mangal, the planet Mars, and this temple on a low rise above the Shipra marks the spot. The deity is a Shiva linga worshipped as Mangalnath, and the sandy red earth of the mound is itself treated as prasad.
Two kinds of Yatri come here:
Those on the Ujjain circuit, who take a quick darshan between Kaal Bhairav and Sandipani Ashram.
Those who have come for Bhat Pooja, the rice offering made by people whose horoscope carries Mangal in a strong house, usually before a marriage.
The pooja is calm and short. It is an offering, not a cure, and the temple's own pujaris describe it that way. Our full-day Ujjain taxi guide slots Mangalnath into the circuit at mid-morning.
Sources differ on the exact closing hour, so treat the evening end as "around 8 to 9 pm" and confirm at the gate. The mornings are consistent.
| What | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Temple opens | About 5 am | Earlier on Tuesdays |
| Morning aarti | About 5 am | Dawn, short |
| Bhat Pooja window | About 7 am to 3 pm | Last receipts around 2 pm |
| Evening aarti | About 7 pm | Lamps and bhajan, 20 minutes |
| Temple closes | About 8 to 9 pm | Later on festival nights |
Tuesday is Mangal's day and the week's crowd. Darshan lines run an hour by 9 am and pooja receipts can close early. Mid-week mornings the whole visit, darshan and pooja, fits in 90 minutes.
Entry is free. There is no paid darshan line here; only the pooja carries a fee.
The pooja is performed inside the temple by a pujari allotted by the temple, and it goes like this:
Buy the pooja receipt at the temple office counter. Give your name, gotra and the date of birth of the person the pooja is for.
Bathe in the Shipra or wash at the temple tap, then wait for your turn in the mandapam.
The pujari performs sankalp, abhishek of the Mangal linga with water and then with cooked rice, the bhat, which covers the linga.
Mantra jaap and aarti follow. A plain Bhat Pooja ends in 30 to 60 minutes; the version with havan and extra jaap runs about two hours.
You carry a little of the red earth and the rice home as prasad.
What it costs: the temple sets its rates and displays them at the office, and the plain pooja there is well under what private websites quote.
Private packages advertised online run from about ₹2,100 to ₹5,100 and more for havan versions; those are a pandit's package, not the temple rate.
Pay only at the office counter and ask for the receipt.
Carry a red cloth, red flowers and a small packet of masoor dal; the office lists anything else. Wear plain, modest clothes. Phones stay off inside.
The temple is on Mangalnath Road on the north edge of the city, beside Sandipani Ashram and above the Shipra.
From Ujjain Junction: about 6 km, 15 minutes by auto. Expect to pay a return fare; autos do not wait for a pooja.
From Mahakaleshwar: about 5 km, 15 to 20 minutes through the old city.
From Indore airport: about 55 km, 90 minutes by road.
From Kaal Bhairav: about 2 km, five minutes; do the two together.
There are steps up from the road to the temple, a short flight of about 30. The taxi drops you at the base; a wheelchair can be carried up by two people. Our guide to temples near Ujjain groups Mangalnath, Kaal Bhairav, Sandipani and Gadkalika into one morning.
With elderly parents: come on a Wednesday or Thursday at 8 am. Book the plain pooja, not the havan version, and ask the office for a seat in the mandapam.
On a budget: darshan is free and takes 15 minutes. Skip the private "package" pandits outside; the office rate is the real one.
On a tight schedule: reach by 7 am, take the first pooja slot, and be at Kaal Bhairav by 9:30 am.
Here specifically for Bhat Pooja: come on any day but Tuesday unless the family insists, and keep the whole morning free.
Avoid anyone at the gate or on the steps who offers to "arrange" the pooja. The office allots the pujari, and that is the only route. For the day's plan around it, see our Ujjain in two days itinerary.

Stay near Mahakal Lok or in Freeganj; Mangalnath is 15 minutes from either, and a 7 am pooja then needs only a 6:30 am taxi. There is no useful accommodation beside the temple itself. Yatris coming from Indore can leave at 5:30 am and still take the first slot.
Reach by 7 am, book at the office, and let the pujari do the rest while the Shipra runs below. Har Har Mahadev.
