Ujjain is one of India's seven Sapta Puri (moksha-granting) cities and one of the four Kumbh Mela sites. The Mahakaleshwar temple houses the third of the 12 Jyotirlingas — uniquely dakshinamurti (south-facing), a distinction tantric tradition assigns to no other Jyotirlinga. Legend traces the temple to King Chandrasena and Lord Shiva's appearance to defeat the demon Dushana; the historical mandir was re-established by King Vikramaditya (whose Vikram Samvat calendar begins at Ujjain in 57 BCE), destroyed by Altamish in the 13th century, and rebuilt in its present five-storied Bhumija-Chalukya-Maratha form by the Maratha general Ranoji Scindia in 1734 CE. The Bhasma Aarti — where the Jyotirlinga is anointed with sacred ash before dawn — happens only at Mahakaleshwar, and is the country's most-searched darshan booking. Ujjain also hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela on the Kshipra river once every 12 years (2028 is the next).

Mahakaleshwar is the third of the 12 Jyotirlingas and the only one that is dakshinamurti — the lingam faces south, a distinction tantric tradition assigns to no other Jyotirlinga. It is also the only Jyotirlinga where the Bhasma Aarti (ash aarti) is performed daily at 4 AM.
Book online at mahakaleshwar.nic.in — the official Shri Mahakaleshwar Mandir Samiti portal. Fee is ₹200 per person, slots open ~60 days in advance and fill fast especially for weekends and Shravan Mondays. Reach the temple by 2:30 AM with printout + ID; dress code (dhoti for men, saree for women) is enforced.
Regular darshan is free. Sheeghra Darshan (fast-track) is ₹250. Bhasma Aarti slot is ₹200 (booked online). Garbh Grah (inner sanctum) is ₹750 when available.
Ujjain is 57 km from Indore — about 1 hr 15 min by taxi or 1.5 hrs by train / shared cab. Indore has the nearest airport (Devi Ahilyabai Holkar / IDR).
~140 km, 3.5-4 hours by road via Indore and Barwah on NH52 + NH47. Full-day round trip by private taxi costs ₹3500-5500. There is no direct train — change at Khandwa or Indore.
The full Simhastha Kumbh runs from 27 March to 27 May 2028 in Ujjain, on the banks of the Kshipra river. Shahi Snans (royal bath dates) are on 9 April, 23 April, and 8 May 2028. Book stay 9-12 months ahead — 14+ crore devotees are expected.
October to March — cool, dry, comfortable. Avoid April-June (very hot, 41°C+) and heavy monsoon (Jul-Sep). For the Bhasma Aarti experience any weekday morning works.
