Registration for the Vaishno Devi yatra is free and done only through the official SMVDSB portal, maavaishnodevi.org — but the Yatra Parchi you print at home is only half the story, since the RFID card that actually gets you past Banganga must be collected in person at Katra.
Here's how registration, Bhawan darshan timings, helicopter cost and the Delhi-Katra journey work right now.
Every Yatri must register as a "New Devotee" on maavaishnodevi.org, entering full name, age, gender and a government photo ID number — Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence or PAN are all accepted.
Registration is completely free, and slots open roughly 30 days ahead with a daily cap of around 15,000 online registrations.
This gets you a downloadable Yatra Parchi, but that PDF isn't your access pass — the mandatory RFID wristband/card must be collected in person at a Katra counter (the Yatra Registration Counter near the bus stand), where staff verify you against the same photo ID you registered with.
Counters run roughly 5 AM to 10 PM daily.
If you couldn't register online, same-day walk-in registration at Katra is still allowed — you don't have to book weeks ahead, though peak season (Navratri, summer holidays) means longer counter queues before you even start the trek.
The mechanics are broadly similar to registering for the Kedarnath yatra from Delhi, if you're comparing the two.
The New Delhi–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Vande Bharat Express is the fastest rail option, covering the roughly 655 km route in about 8 hours 20 minutes.
For an overnight option that lets you sleep through the journey, the Shri Shakti Express runs Delhi to Katra in approximately 10–12 hours depending on stops.
Driving or taxiing covers the same distance by road in about 12–14 hours.
If time matters more than budget, fly Delhi to Jammu (around 1.5 hours) and taxi the roughly 50–60 km from Jammu airport to Katra (1.5–2 hours) — door to door in about 4–5 hours.
For a full fare and seat-class comparison of every train, see our Delhi to Vaishno Devi train and route guide.
The Bhawan is technically open 24 hours, but darshan pauses twice daily for roughly two hours each during the Aarti, so plan around those windows.
Actual waiting time swings hard with season:
roughly 1–2 hours in the quieter Feb–March window,
4–5 hours through May–June,
and 6–9 hours or more during Navratri and other peak dates.
| Route | Distance you cover on foot | Approx. cost | Typical darshan wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular trek (old track via Ardhkuwari) | ~12–13.5 km | Free (pony/palki optional) | 2–10 hrs, season-dependent |
| New Tarakote Marg | ~7 km to rejoin the main track | Free (less crowded, battery-car friendly) | Same Bhawan queue, calmer walk |
| Battery car | Covers Ardhkuwari–Bhawan only | ~₹450 one-way | Same Bhawan queue as regular |
| Helicopter round trip + priority darshan | ~2.5 km on foot/pony from Sanjichhat | ~₹4,640 round trip | Significantly shorter, priority line |
Elders and families with young kids — pony or palki up to Ardhkuwari, then the battery car for the last stretch, or book the helicopter if budget allows; skip the full 12+ km trek on foot in peak heat.
Budget travelers — walk the full route (old track or the shorter Tarakote Marg) and skip paid transport entirely; carry water and start early to beat the midday sun.
Tight-schedule travelers — fly Delhi–Jammu and book a round-trip helicopter from Katra; the only combination that realistically fits a same-weekend return with a comfortable darshan wait.
Avoid boarding a pony or battery car without confirming the fare first — official rates exist, but informal quotes near the base can run well above them.
The Katra–Sanjichhat helicopter fare currently runs about ₹2,320 one-way and ₹4,640 round trip per person, under the fare notification applicable through mid-October 2026 — expect a revision after that, so treat this as indicative.
Booking opens on maavaishnodevi.org roughly 60 days ahead of travel and requires a valid Yatra Parchi.
The flight takes about 8 minutes to Sanjichhat, from where the Bhawan is a further 2.5 km by foot, pony or battery car. Flights are weather-dependent, with full refunds when the shrine board grounds a batch; children under 2 fly free.
Round-trip ticket holders are also routed through a priority queue for Bhawan darshan — the real time-saver over the fare itself.
The RFID card doubles as your toll/access pass at every checkpoint from Banganga onward — no separate toll ticket is needed.
It's free but tightly time-bound: start the yatra within a few hours of collecting the card and finish darshan plus your return within the same day, so don't collect it and then delay your start by many hours.
On the ground, the battery car (Ardhkuwari to Bhawan only) runs about ₹450 one-way, and pony rates from Katra to Bhawan currently run roughly ₹700–900 one-way depending on the operator — confirm the fare before you mount up, since posted rates and what individual owners quote can differ.
Since the yatra effectively starts before dawn, most Yatris stay the night in Katra rather than Jammu. Options range from Shrine Board-run guesthouses like Niharika and Ashirwad Bhawan near the base camp to private hotels along the main bazaar and closer to the Banganga check-post.
Booking within walking distance of the registration counter and trek start point saves real time on yatra morning, especially for an early darshan slot before the day's queue builds up.
However you make the climb — on foot, by pony, or by helicopter — the Bhawan queue moves for everyone in the end. Jai Mata Di.
