The best months for the Mahakal–Omkareshwar yatra from Indore are November to February, when Indore's daytime high sits near 27–30°C and the Mahakal queue is at its shortest. Choose Shravan only if the crowd is the point, and skip the Omkareshwar boat in a wet monsoon week. Here is the whole year, month by month.
Indore is the arrival point for this circuit, so Indore's weather is what you plan around. Ujjain, 55 km north, runs a degree or two hotter in May. Omkareshwar, on the Narmada, feels humid from June.
| Month | Indore high / low | Rain | What it means for the yatra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 26°C / 10°C | Dry | Cold 4 am Bhasma Aarti wait; carry a shawl. Makar Sankranti rush mid-month. |
| Feb | 29°C / 13°C | Dry | Comfortable. Shiv Navratri and Mahashivratri bring huge crowds at the end. |
| Mar–Apr | 35–39°C / 17–21°C | Dry | Fine before 11 am, hard after. Omkareshwar ghats bake. |
| May–mid Jun | 40°C / 25°C | Dry | The hottest weeks. Only for early-morning darshan. |
| Late Jun–Sep | 29–31°C / 22°C | 200–300 mm a month | Green and cool, but boats stop when dam gates open. |
| Oct | 33°C / 18°C |
The figures are long-term averages for Indore city; a single hot spell can push May past 42°C.
This is the window where the yatra is easy. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are mild, and the 7 km Omkar Parvat parikrama can be done after breakfast.
Bhasma Aarti at 4 am means standing outside the gate from about 2:30 am. In December and January that is 10–12°C; carry a shawl and socks.
The evening aartis at Mahakal move to their winter schedule from around 27 October 2026. Bhasma Aarti stays near 4 am and Shayan Aarti near 10:30 pm all year. Our timings guide has the full table.
Omkareshwar's darshan runs roughly 5 am to 9:30 pm, with paid special darshan only until 8 pm. In winter the Narmada is calm and the boat crossing is at its best.
Three dates inside this window are not ordinary days. Diwali (8 November 2026), Kartik Purnima (24 November) and Kaal Bhairav Jayanti (1 December) each pull festival crowds to Ujjain. The New Year week gets its own section below.
Indore crosses 35°C by mid-March and sits near 40°C through May. The stone of the Mahakal Lok corridor and the Omkareshwar ghats holds the heat; by noon it is hard to walk on barefoot.
If this is the only time you have, the circuit still works with one rule: be inside a temple by 7 am and out of the sun by 11. Do Bhasma Aarti in Ujjain, drive to Omkareshwar in the afternoon with the air conditioning on, and take Omkareshwar darshan after 5 pm when the ghat cools.
Mahashivratri 2027 falls on Saturday 6 March. In 2026 Mahakal stayed open for about 44 hours straight and roughly 4 lakh Yatris came on the main day. Glorious, but not quiet.
The rain turns the Malwa plateau green and brings the temperature down to about 30°C. Ujjain alone is pleasant. Omkareshwar needs care.
Then there is Shravan. In 2026 Mahakal counted over 29 lakh Yatris in the first week alone, with 6,13,849 on Monday 3 August. Shravan 2027 runs from 19 July to 17 August, with the Mahakal Sawari every Monday.
Go in Shravan if you want the Sawari and can stand for three hours.
Not with elderly parents or small children. Our elderly-parents guide explains why.
Bhasma Aarti seats in Shravan vanish the morning they open. Book at 8 am sharp.
Between 25 and 31 December 2025 the temple committee counted over 7 lakh Yatris. VIP protocol darshan was suspended, online Bhasma Aarti booking was closed until 5 January, and Yatris walked about 2.5 km from the Triveni Museum side to the queue.
If that is your only free week, come on 27 or 28 December, sleep in Ujjain, and take Bhasma Aarti before the peak. Keep Omkareshwar for 1 or 2 January, when the Narmada side is far quieter.
With elderly parents: November, or the first half of February. Short queues, no heat, no rain, dry ghats.
With children: the December holidays, but before 24 December. Cool mornings, and the Omkareshwar boat is running.
On a tight budget: late September or October. Rooms are cheaper than in peak winter.
For the festival itself: Mahashivratri in March or a Shravan Monday. Accept the queue and book rooms six weeks out.
Avoid: mid-May, the week after a dam release in August, and 29 December to 2 January.
Further ahead, Ujjain's Simhastha Kumbh is expected from late March to late May 2028. Those two months will not be a normal yatra.
In winter, sleep in Ujjain the night before Bhasma Aarti, near the Mahakal Lok side, so the 2:30 am walk is short. In summer, stay in Indore where the drive to either temple is under two hours.
Our 3-day itinerary shows which night goes where. Festival weeks need rooms booked six to eight weeks ahead; a normal November weekend needs about ten days.
Pick the month, fix the dates, and the rest of the yatra falls into place. Har Har Mahadev.
