Omkareshwar sits on Mandhata island, about 140 km and a 3.5–4 hour drive from Ujjain — most Yatris do it as one long day trip. The free queue for this fourth Jyotirlinga can run past five hours; a ₹300 Shighra (VIP) pass cuts that to minutes. Here's the darshan timings, VIP process, island crossing, and a one-day plan.
The temple opens around 5:00 AM and the last general darshan is taken by about 9:30 PM. It shuts briefly twice a day — for Madhyanha Bhog and again for Sayamkalin Shringar — so time your visit around those windows.
The Mangala Aarti runs 5:00–5:30 AM and is the calmest darshan of the day, well before the free queue builds up. A separate Narmada Aarti happens every evening at sunset on Kotitirtha Ghat, on the riverbank facing the island.
| Event | Time |
|---|---|
| General darshan | 5:00 AM – 9:30 PM |
| Mangala Aarti | 5:00 – 5:30 AM |
| Madhyanha Bhog (sanctum closed) | 12:20 – 1:15 PM |
| Sayamkalin Shringar (sanctum closed) | 4:00 – 4:15 PM |
| Narmada Aarti, Kotitirtha Ghat | At sunset |
The free line for Omkareshwar can run past five hours on a Monday or during Shravan. The Shighra darshan pass, priced at ₹300 per person, moves you into a separate, much shorter queue.
Book it two ways: online through shriomkareshwar.org's Special/Shighra Darshan page, choosing a date and time slot and paying by card or UPI, or in person at the temple's ticket counter near Brahmapuri. Either way, carry the printed or SMS e-ticket plus a photo ID — the counter checks both before issuing the entry wristband.
Special darshan tickets cover one person each and are valid only until about 8:00 PM. Children under 12 get in free with a paying parent, but not alone.
The temple itself sits on Mandhata island, separated from the mainland town by the Narmada. Three ways get you across, and each suits a different kind of Yatri.
| Option | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cantilever footbridge | Free | 5–7 min walk | Fit walkers, light luggage |
| Motorboat from Gomukh Ghat | ₹20–50/person | ~5 min | Families, quick crossing |
| Solar ropeway | ₹100 round trip | Few minutes | Elders, hot afternoons |
The boat from Gomukh Ghat stays the most popular route despite two bridges being open, mostly because it drops closer to the ghats below the temple. Keep small change ready — vendors rarely carry it during rush hours.
Leaving Ujjain by 5:00–5:30 AM puts you on Mandhata island by around 9:00–9:30 AM, ahead of the late-morning rush. Budget 1–1.5 hours for VIP darshan plus a look at Mamleshwar, then lunch in Omkareshwar town before the 3.5–4 hour drive back.
That schedule gets most cars back into Ujjain by early evening, in time for Mahakaleshwar's evening aarti. Anyone adding the parikrama or a leisurely boat ride should start earlier still, closer to 4:30–5:00 AM.
For the fuller route breakdown — highway stretches, fuel stops, and the drive itself — see our Ujjain to Omkareshwar journey guide, which covers the road trip end to end.
Across the river on the mainland sits Mamleshwar (also called Amareshwar), widely held to complete the same Jyotirlinga darshan that Omkareshwar begins. Most Yatris visit both temples on the same trip rather than choosing one.
Walking the full parikrama around Mandhata island covers roughly 6–8 km and takes 3–4 hours over a marked path with a moderate climb. It's a full ritual on its own — worth a separate trip rather than squeezing into a one-day plan from Ujjain.
Traveling with elders: take the solar ropeway over the footbridge, and book Shighra darshan in advance so no one stands in a five-hour line.
On a budget: skip the VIP pass, cross by the free footbridge, and go early — the 5:00–7:00 AM window is nearly as fast as VIP for free.
On a tight schedule: book VIP darshan online before you leave Ujjain, skip the parikrama, and keep Mamleshwar as the only add-on stop.
What to avoid: Mondays in Shravan and Maha Shivratri, when the temple runs an all-night queue and the free line can outlast your whole day.

Because Omkareshwar is a same-day round trip from Ujjain for most Yatris, staying near Mahakal the night before works better than booking a room in Omkareshwar town itself. It puts you close to Ujjain's early Bhasma Aarti and an early start the next morning.
If you'd rather split the trip over two days, small guesthouses cluster near the temple's Brahmapuri side, close enough to walk to the ticket counter. Rooms near the ghats fill up fast around Shravan and Maha Shivratri, so book at least a few weeks ahead for those dates.
Our guide to staying near Mahakal for Bhasma Aarti covers areas and walking distances if you're basing yourself in Ujjain both nights.
Darshan at Omkareshwar rewards an early start more than a fat wallet — the 5 AM window is often as fast as the VIP pass, just quieter. Har Har Mahadev.
