Khajrana Ganesh Temple in Indore is open from 5 am to midnight, with aarti at 8 am and 8 pm, and it sits about 12 km from the airport and 5 km from Indore Junction. A Yatri with three spare hours in Indore can take darshan and still make the taxi to Ujjain or Omkareshwar.
This guide gives the timings, the distances, the Wednesday crowd and a plan that fits the gap.
The temple's official site lists darshan from 5:00 am to 12:00 midnight. The abhishek is performed between 5:30 and 6:30 am, and the two aartis are at 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. Some guides print an afternoon closure, but the official schedule does not.
Every morning the pujari applies a fresh chola of sindoor to the murti, about half a kilo of sindoor in a kilo and a quarter of ghee. Come before the 8 am aarti and you see it freshly done.
Entry is free. There is no paid darshan line on an ordinary day, and the temple's own site handles prasad, abhishek and donation bookings online.
Khajrana is on the east side of Indore. Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is on the west, so you cross the city.
| From | Distance | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indore Airport (IDR) | about 12 km | 30–40 min | via Ring Road or MR-10 |
| Indore Junction (INDB) | about 5 km | 15–25 min | autos outside the station |
| Sarwate bus stand | about 5 km | 15–25 min | same side as the station |
Allow the upper figure between 9 and 11 am and 5 and 8 pm, when Ring Road slows. Autos and app cabs both reach the temple gate, and the complex has ample free parking, so a taxi can wait inside.
If you landed late at night and want Mahakal first, our late-night Indore airport to Ujjain plan covers that. Khajrana fits better on the way back.
The murti dates to 1735, when Ahilyabai Holkar had it raised from a well where pujaris had hidden it during Aurangzeb's campaigns. The story of the well came to a local pujari, Pandit Mangal Bhatt, in a dream, and his family still serves the temple.
The ritual Yatris come for is simple. You make a wish and draw an ulta swastik, upside down, on the wall behind the sanctum. When the wish is fulfilled you return, draw it the right way up, and offer laddu or modak. Thread is tied at the same wall.
The complex also holds smaller shrines to other deities around the main Ganesh mandir. A full walk of them takes 20 minutes on a quiet morning.
Wednesday is Ganesh's day, and at Khajrana the queue runs from early morning until late night. Sunday is the second heaviest, and every Chaturthi, Vinayak and Sankashti, adds an evening surge. Ganeshotsav brings lakhs across the ten days, and the Indore Collector performs aarti on Anant Chaturdashi before the visarjan procession.
What this means for a Yatri with a connection to make:
Tuesday, Thursday or Friday morning: under an hour including parking.
Wednesday before 7:30 am: manageable, 30–45 minutes.
Wednesday after 10 am, or any Wednesday evening: one to two hours. Not for a day with a flight.
Sankashti evening: the moonrise aarti crowd. Beautiful, but slow.
This fits a morning landing and a taxi onward to Ujjain, 55 km and about 1.5 hours away, or Omkareshwar, 77 km and about 2 hours.
8:00 am: land, meet the driver at arrivals.
8:40 am: reach Khajrana, car waits in the temple parking.
8:45–9:45 am: darshan, ulta swastik, prasad from the counter.
10:00 am: leave for Ujjain or Omkareshwar.
11:30 am: Mahakal, in time for the midday darshan. Or 12 noon at Omkareshwar.
Wondering whether both jyotirlingas fit in the same day? Our Mahakal and Omkareshwar in one day from Indore post answers that honestly.
With elders: weekday morning, taxi that waits inside the parking. The walk from the gate to the sanctum is short and flat.
On a budget: auto from Indore Junction, 5 km, then the public bus to Ujjain from Sarwate. Khajrana costs nothing.
On a tight schedule: airport taxi straight to Khajrana at 8 am, one hour inside, onward by 10. Do not add a second Indore stop.
Here for the wish: come on a Wednesday if the day matters to you, but before 7:30 am.
Avoid a Wednesday evening arrival with a train or flight the same night. The queue plus Ring Road traffic is the combination that misses connections.
Most Yatris do not sleep in Indore at all; Khajrana is a stop between the airport and a jyotirlinga. If you must, Vijay Nagar and the AB Road hotels are 10 minutes from the temple and on the way out to Ujjain.
For the onward night, choose by where your next darshan is. Our Indore to Omkareshwar guide covers rooms at the ghat, and Ujjain's temple-side lanes are covered on our Ujjain pages.
Draw the swastik, take the laddu, and let the driver take you on to the Shipra or the Narmada. Ganpati Bappa Morya.
