Baba Mahakal leaves his temple on four Mondays this winter: 16 and 23 November and 30 November and 7 December 2026, according to the temple committee's Kartik–Agahan schedule reported in October. The sawari starts at 4 pm and reaches Ram Ghat for abhishek with Kshipra water about an hour later.
From Indore it is an easy afternoon run, if you know where the roads close and where to stand.
Mahakal's sawaris are famous in Shravan, but the Kartik and Agahan months carry their own set, quieter and colder. The committee's schedule for 2026, as reported by Ujjain news on 7 October, is below. Confirm against the temple's own notice as each Monday nears; the dates line up with the panchang.
| Date | Sawari | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 16 Nov 2026 | First Kartik sawari | Manmahesh in the silver palki, the first outing since Dussehra |
| Mon 23 Nov 2026 | Second Kartik sawari | Chandramouleshwar joins in past years; Harihar Milan the same night at 11 pm |
| Mon 30 Nov 2026 | First Agahan sawari | Smaller crowd, best for families |
| Mon 7 Dec 2026 | Last sawari of the year | Called the shahi or final sawari in earlier years |
Kartik Purnima falls on Tuesday 24 November, the day after the second sawari, and Diwali is on Sunday 8 November. Expect the 23 November Monday to be the busiest of the four.
The committee counts six outings in three months: the Dussehra shami-pujan sawari on 20 October, these four Mondays, and the Harihar Milan night. Our Harihar Milan night plan covers the 11 pm procession to Gopal Mandir.
The sawari begins inside the temple with pujan in the sabhamandap, then an armed-police guard of honour at the main gate at 4 pm. From there the route is:
Mahakal chowk and Mahakal ghati, past the temple's own gates.
Gudri chauraha, the first wide junction with the widest footpaths, where most families stand.
Bakshi Bazar, narrow and loud, with drums and bhajan mandalis; shoulder to shoulder, not for children or elders.
Kaharwadi, the last stretch to the river.
Ram Ghat on the Kshipra, reached around 5 to 5:30 pm, where the pujari performs abhishek with river water.
The return runs through Gangaur Darwaza, Kartik Chowk, Khati ka Mandir, Dhaba Road, Chhatri Chowk, Gopal Mandir and Patni Bazar, reaching the temple late in the evening. The return is slower than the outbound leg, as mandalis stop at every chowk. Plan on being free again by around 8 pm.
In the first Kartik sawari the deity travels as Manmahesh in the silver palki. In past years the second sawari has added Chandramouleshwar in a second palki. The elephant, Nandi rath and Garud rath you may have seen in Shravan are a monsoon-season feature; do not count on them in Kartik.
On 23 November the day does not end with the return. At 11 pm Mahakal travels again to Gopal Mandir for Harihar Milan: Mahakal wears the morpankh, Krishna receives the bilva mala, and the charge of the world passes between them for the months ahead.
Ram Ghat abhishek is the moment Yatris come for. Darshan of the palki at the ghat is possible from the steps on both banks, but the Mahakal side fills first.
Indore to Ujjain is about 55 km via Sanwer, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes on a normal day; six-laning work means diversions through 2026, so allow more. Our Indore–Ujjain road, rail and bus guide covers the alternatives.
The scale is different from the monsoon. Mahakal counted 5.5 crore visitors in 2025 and over 6 lakh on a single Shravan Monday; Kartik Mondays draw a fraction of that, which is why they suit families.
For a sawari Monday the day looks like this:
Leave Indore by 10 am if you also want Mahakal darshan. Monday darshan takes an hour or more; on sawari days it runs longer. See our Mahakal darshan timings and Bhasma aarti pass guide.
Leave by 1 pm if you only want the sawari. Park and be at Gudri chauraha by 3:30 pm.
Parking: on heavy days vehicles are sent to grounds like Karkaraj, Kartik Mela ground and Meghdoot Van, with e-rickshaws from the main road to Nandi Dwar.
Mahakal ghati is closed to vehicles during the procession, so walk the last kilometre.
With elderly parents: 30 November. The crowd is lightest and the ghat steps are manageable; stand at Gudri and skip the ghat.
Want the fullest spectacle: 23 November, then stay for Harihar Milan at 11 pm and sleep in Ujjain.
First time: 16 November. The first sawari of the season has the ceremony without the Kartik Purnima rush.
Avoid: arriving after 3 pm on any sawari Monday, or driving into the old town expecting to park near the temple.
Winter evenings in Ujjain drop below 10°C by December; carry a shawl for the ghat.
Most Yatris from Indore drive home the same night; the road is quiet after 9 pm. If you are staying for Harihar Milan on 23 November, sleep in Ujjain within a kilometre of Mahakal and book early, as that week also carries Kartik Purnima.
Four Mondays, one palki, one river. Har Har Mahadev.
