Mahashivratri 2027 falls on Saturday 6 March 2027, and at Mahakaleshwar it is a two-day event, not a night. The doors open at about 02:30 on Saturday and stay open for roughly 44 hours, and the year's only daytime Bhasma Aarti comes on Sunday 7 March around noon.
From Indore the temple is about 55 km away, but on this weekend no outside vehicle gets near it, so the plan below is built around the shuttle, the queue and the clock.
The pattern has been identical for three years, so the 2027 timetable below is the 2026 one shifted to the new date. The temple committee publishes the official 2027 schedule a few weeks before; check it for the exact hour of the Sehra Aarti.
| Day | What happens at Mahakal | Time in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 26 Feb 2027 (approx.) | Shiv Navratri begins: haldi and chandan shringar after the Koteshwar pooja | Morning; Bhog Aarti moves to 14:00 for nine days |
| Sat 6 Mar 2027 | Doors open with Bhasma Aarti; darshan all day and all night; no Shayan Aarti | Opened 02:30 |
| Sat night | Mahakal dressed as the groom with the sehra; Saptadhan shringar | Around midnight |
| Sun 7 Mar 2027 | Sehra darshan, then the daytime Bhasma Aarti | Early morning, aarti about 12:00 |
| Sun night | Doors close | About 23:00 |
The nine-day Shiv Navratri should run from about 26 February to 6 March 2027. The 2026 festival ran 6 to 15 February, nine days ending on Mahashivratri, and 2027's dates are not yet announced.
Shiv Navratri is the wedding festival of Mahakal, and each evening the deity is dressed differently. In 2026 the sequence was:
Day 1: haldi and chandan after the morning pooja of Koteshwar and Chandramouleshwar
Day 2: new vastra and ornaments
Day 3: Sheshnag shringar
Day 4: Ghatatop, with the mukut, mekhla, mundmala and fruit garland
Day 5: Chhabina
Day 6: Holkar shringar
Day 7: Manmahesh
Day 8: Uma-Mahesh
Day 9, the eve: Shiv Tandav
Mahashivratri night: Saptadhan shringar and the groom roop with the sehra
A weekday evening in Shiv Navratri is the quiet way to see Mahakal in festival dress. The crowd is a fraction of Saturday's, and the Sandhya Aarti still needs its usual online booking. Our Mahakal darshan timings and Bhasma Aarti pass guide covers the normal daily clock.
In 2026 Ujjain banned vehicles on the Hari Phatak to Mahakal Ghati stretch from 16:00 on the day before. Cars from Indore, Dewas and Maksi were diverted via the Narwar bypass to parking at the Pipe Factory, Mannat Garden and Imperial Hotel grounds, with shuttle buses to Karkraj.
From Karkraj the general route was Bhil Samaj Dharamshala, Chardham parking, Shakti Path, Nandi Gate, Mahakal Lok, Mansarovar Bhavan and finally darshan from the Ganesh Mandapam. Exit was by the Harsiddhi side. Water booths stood every 200 m along the path.
Crowd in 2026: about 10 lakh expected over 44 hours; the running count passed 3.96 lakh by 17:00 and 5 lakh by 22:00 on Saturday.
Target wait: the administration aimed for a 40-minute darshan; guides report far longer at peak hours.
Quietest window: Saturday 03:00 to 06:00, right after opening, and Sunday after the daytime Bhasma Aarti.
Sheeghra darshan, ₹250: sold on Mahashivratri in 2026, with a separate barricaded lane. About 25,000 yatris used it over the two days. It does not include sanctum entry.
Bhasma Aarti pass: booking has been fully online since April 2026 on the temple committee portal, ₹200 per person, name matching the photo ID. 300 Tatkal slots open the day before. In 2026 pass holders entered via Mansarovar Bhavan and Gate 1 on Mahashivratri; whether the committee opens regular bookings for 6 March is not announced, so watch the portal from December.
Sunday's daytime Bhasma Aarti: in 2025 people without a pass were allowed to witness it. Treat that as a hope, not a promise.
Garbhagriha: assume no entry on these two days. Jal is offered from the mandap.
Fakes: Ujjain Police shut nine fake Bhasma Aarti and Bhakt Niwas booking sites. Pay only on the official portal.
The Bhasma Aarti dress code and reporting time does not change for the festival: dhoti and sola for men, saree or salwar with dupatta for women.
With elderly parents: come on a weekday evening of Shiv Navratri for the shringar darshan, and skip the 44-hour weekend. The 2 km walk from parking is the hard part, not the queue.
First time, want the whole night: sleep in Ujjain on Friday, join the line by 01:00 on Saturday, take darshan in the 03:00 to 06:00 window, and rest until the Sehra on Sunday morning.
One day only: drive in on Sunday morning for the Sehra darshan and the noon Bhasma Aarti, when Saturday's crowd has thinned, and return to Indore by evening.
Adding Omkareshwar: go on Monday 8 March. It is about 80 km and 2.5 hours from Indore, and 140 km from Ujjain via Indore. On Mahashivratri itself Omkareshwar opened at 03:00 and drew about 2 lakh people in 2025, so never try both Jyotirlingas on the same day.
Avoid: arriving in Ujjain on Saturday afternoon by car and hoping to park near Hari Phatak.
Early March is dry and comfortable in Ujjain: 18 to 33 °C, with a cool night for the queue.
Book by early December. Guides advise three to four months ahead for Mahashivratri, and a mid-range room that costs about ₹2,200 on a normal night is quoted at ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 on festival nights.
Ujjain, near Mahakal: budget rooms ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 off-season, three-star ₹2,800 to ₹4,500; the new Radisson added supply in 2026.
Dharamshalas: Seth Mansinghka Yatri Niwas from about ₹2,100, Kailash Kuti from about ₹900. Bhakt Niwas only through the temple committee.
Sleeping in Indore instead: cheaper and easier to find, but you still reach the temple by shuttle. Our where to sleep each night on the circuit guide weighs both.
Two nights, one sehra and 44 hours of open doors: start from Indore, and let the driver handle the bypass. Har Har Mahadev.
