On the Mahakal–Omkareshwar circuit from Indore the question is not which hotel, but which town you sleep in each night. Sleep in Ujjain and the 4 am Bhasma Aarti is a ten-minute walk; sleep in Indore and it is a 2 am drive. Here are the nights, the room rates in each town, and the trap.
Three legs make the circuit, and none of them is long enough to need a night on the road:
| Leg | Distance | Time by car |
|---|---|---|
| Indore → Ujjain (Mahakal) | about 55 km | about 1 hr 30 min |
| Ujjain → Omkareshwar | about 140 km | 3 to 4 hrs |
| Omkareshwar → Maheshwar | about 65–70 km | about 2 hrs |
| Maheshwar → Indore | about 90–95 km | about 2 hrs |
| Indore → Omkareshwar direct | about 78–81 km | 2 to 2.5 hrs |
What does need a night is the aarti clock. Mahakal's Bhasma Aarti is around 4 am; Omkareshwar's mangal aarti is around 5 am and the temple closes about 9:30 pm. Sleep in the town whose aarti you want next morning.
For the order of the two Jyotirlingas see Mahakal or Omkareshwar first.
Everything about Ujjain accommodation turns on one walk, from your bed to Gate 4 before 3:30 am. Dharamshalas and budget hotels sit 200 m to 1 km from the temple; three-star hotels 1 to 3 km out; the bigger hotels 3 to 6 km away on the Indore road.
The temple's own Shri Mahakaleshwar Bhakt Niwas, run by the Madhav Seva Nyas, lists rooms from about ₹1,365 for a double to ₹2,310 for a deluxe, with three- and four-bed rooms between. Hatkeshwar Dham and the other dharamshalas near the temple are in the same band.
Our where to stay for Bhasma Aarti post lists the lanes by distance from the gate.
Omkareshwar is small and the choice is between two kinds of bed. The Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan Bhakt Niwas is the Yatri's standard: non-AC two-bed rooms from about ₹1,250–1,450, AC four-bed about ₹2,550, meals on the premises, and a reputation for being full. Book the day your dates are fixed.
The state tourism Narmada Resort faces the river and lists air-cooled rooms about ₹1,790, AC about ₹2,990 and deluxe about ₹4,990, GST extra. A private resort on the hill runs about ₹2,800–3,300 for a basic room.
Any of these puts the 5 am aarti and the bridge to the temple within a short walk or a two-minute drive.
Indore makes sense in exactly three cases:
You are flying in late. Land after 10 pm, sleep near the airport, and go to Mahakal at 5 am for general darshan rather than the aarti. Our late-night arrival plan covers it.
You have no Bhasma Aarti slot. Without one, the 4 am start is pointless; a 5 am departure from Indore reaches Mahakal by 6:30 am.
You want one hotel for three days. Each temple becomes a day trip: Ujjain 55 km, Omkareshwar 78 km, Maheshwar 90 km. It costs you the two aartis and about five hours of extra driving.
Indore hotels start lower than Ujjain's dharamshalas on weekdays and have far more rooms, which matters on a festival weekend when Ujjain is full.
Rooms on this circuit go in a fixed sequence, and the order matters more than the hotel name:
Bhasma Aarti slot first. Only when you hold a slot do you know which night is Ujjain.
Omkareshwar Sansthan or Narmada Resort next. These have the fewest rooms on the circuit and fill before Ujjain does.
Ujjain dharamshala or hotel last. Ujjain has the most beds; even a week ahead something within a kilometre is usually open on a weekday.
Taxi once the nights are fixed. Give the driver the two dharamshala names so he plans the parking.
Carry a printed copy of each booking. Dharamshala counters still ask for paper, and the phone network at Omkareshwar drops in the lanes.
With elderly parents: Ujjain night 1 within 500 m of the gate, Omkareshwar night 2 at the Narmada Resort for the lift and the flat approach. Skip Maheshwar or do it as a morning stop.
On a budget: Bhakt Niwas in Ujjain, Sansthan in Omkareshwar, both booked a month ahead. Two nights for roughly ₹2,600–3,500 for a family of four.
On a tight schedule: one night only, in Ujjain, then Omkareshwar and back to Indore the next evening. The two-day itinerary is built on this.
Avoid: a hotel "near Mahakal" that is 3 km away. Several listings say near and mean a 15-minute drive you will do at 3 am.
Ujjain: Shri Mahakaleshwar Bhakt Niwas, Hatkeshwar Dham, budget hotels in the Gate 4 lanes; three-stars on Dewas Gate and Indore road.
Omkareshwar: Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan Bhakt Niwas; MP Tourism Narmada Resort; one or two hill resorts.
Maheshwar: a handful of guesthouses by the fort gate, and a state tourism retreat by the river; needed only if you stay for the aarti.
Indore: the airport belt and Vijay Nagar for late flights, anything on the AB Road side for an early run to Ujjain.
Sleep where the aarti is, and the circuit stops feeling like a drive. Har Har Mahadev.
