Omkareshwar and Maheshwar fit into one long day from Indore if you take the Jyotirlinga first and end at the Narmada aarti. The loop is about 240 km, roughly six hours of driving, with a 6 AM start and a 9:30 PM return.
This plan is built around two fixed times: the Omkareshwar bhog closure at 12:20 PM and the Ahilya Ghat aarti around 7 PM.
The order matters. Omkareshwar's darshan has a midday break and Maheshwar's aarti is after dark, so the Jyotirlinga comes first and the ghat comes last. Doing it the other way round costs you one of the two.
| Leg | Road | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indore → Omkareshwar | via Choral and Bherughat, hill sections | about 80 km | 2 hrs 15 min to 2.5 hrs |
| Omkareshwar → Maheshwar | SH 38 via Mandleshwar | about 66 km | about 1.5 hrs |
| Maheshwar → Indore | plain road | 90 to 96 km | about 2 hrs |
The Indore–Omkareshwar stretch is getting a four-lane road with three tunnels. Until it fully opens, keep the 2.5-hour figure and add more behind trucks on the ghat sections. The hour-by-hour plan in our Omkareshwar one-day guide is the base this loop extends.
The temple opens for darshan at 5 AM after the Mangal Aarti, and closes for madhyanha bhog from 12:20 to 1:15 PM. On an ordinary weekday the Jyotirlinga line takes about an hour from 8:30 AM. Mondays and festival days double that.
Cross by the Mamleshwar Setu, the 235-metre footbridge from 2004, which lands at the temple gate. It suits elders and takes 5 minutes.
Or cross by boat from the ghat, paid per head at the ghat. It shows the Om-shaped island and takes about 10 minutes.
Mamleshwar on the south bank is the paired lingam, about 45 minutes with a shorter line. Many Yatris count the darshan complete only with both.
From the ghat you see the 108-foot Statue of Oneness of Adi Shankaracharya on the hill, unveiled in September 2023. Viewing is free, about 10 AM to 6 PM, with Ekatma Dham construction still going on around it. It is a 30-minute detour, so take it only if the Jyotirlinga line was short.
6:00 AM leave Indore; tea at Choral if you must, no longer.
8:30 AM Omkareshwar ghat; cross the Setu; Jyotirlinga line.
9:45 AM Mamleshwar.
10:45 AM back over the bridge, a quick look at the statue from the ghat, early lunch in the bazaar.
11:45 AM leave for Maheshwar.
1:15 PM Maheshwar; fort gate, Rajwada and the temples inside the fort.
3:30 PM rest in the lanes below the fort, the ghat is empty in the heat.
4:30 PM shared boat to Baneshwar, the island temple, about ₹100 per person.
6:00 PM Ahilyeshwar evening aarti.
6:40 PM seated at Ahilya Ghat for the Narmada aarti.
7:30 PM leave; 9:30 PM Indore.
This plan skips the Omkar parikrama and the 8 to 10 AM Shivalinga pooja inside the Maheshwar fort. Both need a night on the river, which our 3-day Mahakal, Omkareshwar and Maheshwar itinerary gives them.
Leave Omkareshwar on the Mortakka side, cross the Narmada, and take SH 38 west through Mandleshwar. It is about 66 km and 1.5 hours on a fair two-lane road, with the river never far on your right. There is no reason to stop; the fort is waiting and closes at 6 PM.
Ahilyabai Holkar's fort stands above the ghat and is open roughly 7 AM to 6 PM. The temples inside are the reason for the afternoon:
Rajwada: the queen's seat and statue; the Shivalinga pooja here is 8 to 10 AM, which this loop misses.
Ahilyeshwar: her memorial shrine, built by her daughter Krishnabai; aarti at about 8 AM and 6 PM. The 6 PM one fits.
Rajrajeshwar: the Shiva temple with eleven lamps kept burning, a few steps along the fort wall.
Kashi Vishwanath: rebuilt in 1780 as a copy of the Varanasi temple, almost always quiet.
The Narmada aarti at Ahilya Ghat is around 7 PM, after sunset, with lamps set on the water. Some guides list 8 PM; confirm at the ghat in the afternoon and be seated 20 minutes early. Our Maheshwar day guide has the ghat and the boats in more detail.
First visit, able-bodied family: the full loop above, 6 AM to 9:30 PM.
With elderly parents: use the Setu at Omkareshwar, skip the Baneshwar boat, leave Maheshwar at 7:30 sharp. Or split it over two days with a night in Maheshwar.
On a tight schedule: Omkareshwar only, back by 3:45 PM; Maheshwar another day.
On a Monday or a festival: do not attempt both. Kartik Purnima on 24 November 2026 fills Omkareshwar from dawn; the Kartik Purnima plan is a separate day.
Avoid: a start after 7 AM, which lands you in the bhog closure, and any boat fare agreed after you are afloat.
This is a day loop, so most Yatris sleep in Indore the night before, near the Junction or on the southern side of the city for the 6 AM start. Back by 9:30 PM, the same room works for the night after.
If the two-day version appeals, stay in Maheshwar near the fort gate so the 6 AM river and the 8 AM fort pooja are a walk. MP Tourism's resort near the fort and the guesthouses below it both sell out on long weekends.
Two Narmada darshans and the lamps on the water, all in one day from Indore. Har Har Mahadev.
