Ekvira Devi at Karla, above the Karla caves near Lonavala, is the kuladevi of Mumbai's Koli and Agri families. Navratri 2026 runs from Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October to Vijayadashami on Tuesday 20 October. The temple is about 110 km from Mumbai, 2 to 2.5 hours by Expressway, with roughly 500 steps at the end.
Navratri 2026 begins with Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October and ends with Vijayadashami on Tuesday 20 October. In 2026 the Ashtami tithi ends mid-morning on 19 October, so Ashtami and Maha Navami are both observed on Monday 19 October. That night and the following morning are the peak at Karla.
Koli and Agri families come as whole villages, with dhols, flags and offerings, and the Marathi press has reported Navratri crowds at about double the normal weekend. The Chaitra yatra in April is the other big festival here, and both get their own police orders.
The temple office has not published a Navratri 2026 timetable anywhere we could find. Call ahead or ask at the base before you commit to a late-afternoon climb.
On normal days aggregators list darshan at about 5 am to 12 noon and 4 pm to 9 pm, with morning aarti around 5:30 am and evening aarti around 7:30 pm. The midday closure is the trap: a Mumbai family arriving at 1 pm after a 2.5-hour drive can find the doors shut.
The Karla caves share the hilltop. The ASI ticket is about ₹25 for Indians and the caves open 9 am to 5 pm, which does not govern the temple. Carry water, go up before 10 am, and keep elders on the right of the steps where the rail is.
| Option | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Car via Expressway | 2–2.5 hrs | Exit at Lonavala, old highway to Karla phata, ~6 km |
| Express train to Lonavala | 2 hr 20 min | Indrayani 22105 dep CSMT 5:40 am, arr 7:58 am |
| Lonavala → Malavli local + auto | 30–45 min | Malavli station is 3–5 km from the base |
There is no Mumbai suburban local to Lonavala. Use an express: Indrayani 22105 leaves CSMT at 5:40 am and reaches Lonavala at 7:58 am, and the Intercity 12127 leaves at 6:40 am. From Lonavala take the Pune-side local one stop to Malavli, then an auto to the base.
Last year's order from the Pune District Administration and Pune Rural Police set the pattern:
Heavy vehicles banned 6 am to 10 pm on the old Mumbai–Pune highway between Kusgaon Budruk toll plaza and Vadgaon Maval phata, for the main festival days.
Karla phata to the Ekvira foothills road closed to heavy vehicles for the whole festival.
Heavy traffic for Pune diverted onto the Expressway at Urse toll, and at Vadgaon Maval via Somatane phata.
The ban is on the old highway, not the Expressway, and cars were not covered. A hired bus or tempo traveller from Mumbai is a heavy vehicle and can be stopped at Kusgaon Budruk toll.
The 2025 order came about five days before Ghatasthapana, so check Pune Rural Police notices around 6 to 10 October 2026.
With elders or small children: a weekday morning in the first week, 12 to 16 October. Reach the base by 7 am and avoid the full climb in the afternoon heat.
For the atmosphere: Ashtami night on 19 October, but only with your own car and the driver parked before noon. Expect the road to crawl from Karla phata.
On a budget: Indrayani Express to Lonavala and the local to Malavli. Carry the return train times, since Deccan Queen leaves Lonavala for Mumbai around 7:18 pm.
Avoid: arriving between noon and 4 pm on any day, and a hired bus during the heavy-vehicle hours.
If Navratri at Karla sounds like too much, our Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Navratri guide and the Vaishno Devi Navratri plan cover the two other big Devi journeys from Mumbai.
Most Mumbai Yatris do Karla as a day trip. If you want the Ashtami night, stay in Lonavala, 8 to 11 km from the caves, where rooms exist at every budget and the old highway to Karla phata is short.
For a longer trip, Lonavala also lets you add Bhimashankar in a day on the way back. Book Lonavala now for 17 to 20 October, because Navratri and the long Dussehra weekend overlap.
Climb early, carry water, and let Aai Ekvira's dhols do the rest. Jai Ekvira Aai.
