Mumbai to Ujjain is an overnight hop, not an expedition. The Avantika Express leaves Mumbai Central at 8:55 PM and reaches Ujjain Junction around 7:30 AM, or you fly to Indore in 1 hour 25 minutes and drive 55 km. The real planning question is the Bhasma Aarti, whose 2:30 AM reporting time decides which night you leave.
Two trains matter, and both leave Mumbai Central (BCT) late in the evening. Both halt at Ujjain Junction (UJN) on the way to Indore, so book Ujjain as your destination.
| Train | Leaves Mumbai Central | Reaches Ujjain Jn | Runs | Classes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12961 Avantika Express | 8:55 PM | around 7:30 AM, day 2 | Daily | 1A, 2A, 3A, SL |
| 12227 Indore Duronto | 11:10 PM | around 8:40 AM, day 2 | Two days a week (listed Thu and Sat) | AC only, few halts |
Timetable sites disagree by about an hour on the Ujjain arrival, so check IRCTC before travel. Book 3A on the Avantika early: waitlists ran deep through the 2026 monsoon, and Tatkal opens only one day before.
For the return, the Duronto 12228 leaves Indore at 9:00 PM and reaches Mumbai Central at 8:20 AM; the 12962 Avantika runs daily through Ujjain.
Ujjain has no commercial airport. Mumbai–Indore is a 1 hour 25 minute nonstop, with roughly eight options a day counting one-stops, and economy fares from about ₹5,500 that climb fast around Diwali.
Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport (IDR) to Mahakaleshwar is about 55 km, 1 hour 15 minutes on the four-lane Indore–Ujjain highway. Prepaid taxis wait outside arrivals; Ola and Uber are patchy inside Ujjain.
Door to door, flight plus taxi is about 5 hours against 11 to 12 by train, which wins when you have only a weekend or an elder cannot manage a berth. The train sleeps you, though, and a 2:30 AM morning punishes the tired.
The aarti runs 4:00 to 6:00 AM daily and slot-holders report between 2:30 and 3:00 AM. You therefore sleep in Ujjain the night before.
Book only on shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. The window opens about 30 days ahead; a ₹200 permission pass is commonly quoted alongside a free general quota. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide walks through the steps and the impostor sites.
In 2026 the one-day-prior counter is reported to have become an online Tatkal release around 8 AM the previous day. The Samiti revises rules quietly, so confirm on the portal before paying.
What the gate checks:
Men — dhoti and sola; stitched trousers are turned away.
Women — saree, pallu over the head during the bhasma offering.
Original ID matching the pass; phones stay in the cloakroom outside.
Children above 5 need their own pass.
For daytime darshan the mandir is open roughly 4 AM to 11 PM. The ₹250 Shighra Darshan lane and ₹750 Garbh Grah pass are in our Mahakaleshwar rules guide; VIP protocol darshan was suspended in the 2025–26 winter rush.
This assumes the Friday-night Avantika; a Saturday morning flight slots in at the same point.
Day 1 — arrival and the evening temples
7:30 AM — Ujjain Junction; a prepaid auto covers the 2 km to the Mahakal area in 10 minutes.
3:00 PM — the free 900 m Mahakal Lok corridor.
5:00 PM — Kal Bhairav, 5 to 8 km by auto; allow 30 to 60 minutes in the queue.
6:30 PM — Ram Ghat Shipra aarti, between 6 and 7 PM by season. A dispute over who conducts it flared in August 2026, so ask locally.
Day 2 — the aarti and beyond
2:30 AM — report with printout and original ID.
4:00–6:00 AM — Bhasma Aarti, seated on the floor.
6:15 AM — Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth, 400 m on foot.
7:00 AM — leave for Omkareshwar by car, or see Sandipani Ashram and Mangalnath and catch the 12962 home.
It fits only with a private car and a prompt exit from the aarti. Ujjain to Omkareshwar is about 140 km, 3 to 4 hours via Indore and Barwah, so a 7 AM start reaches Mandhata Island by about 10:30 AM.
The mandir keeps two sessions, roughly 5 AM to 3:50 PM and 4:15 to 9:30 PM, and a ₹300 priority pass is reported. Yatris take both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar across the river; our Omkareshwar day plan from Ujjain has the details.
End at Indore rather than driving back: Omkareshwar to Indore is about 80 km, so an evening flight or the 9:00 PM Duronto is reachable.
With elders — fly to Indore, prepaid taxi to a hotel within walking distance of the mandir, skip Omkareshwar.
On a budget — Avantika Sleeper or 3A both ways, the free aarti quota if it shows, and the free queue on a weekday between 9 and 11 AM.
On a tight weekend — Friday night Avantika, Sunday aarti, Sunday evening flight from Indore.
Family with luggage — a private taxi from Mumbai is a long day, about 650 km, but it then serves the 2:30 AM drop and Omkareshwar.
Avoid — Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri without a confirmed pass, "agents" selling aarti seats, and arriving by train on the aarti morning.
Stay close enough to walk to the mandir gate at 2:30 AM, because autos are thin at that hour. Rooms within a kilometre of Mahakaleshwar sell out first, so book the night your aarti slot is confirmed.
Book the aarti first, the train second, the room third, and the trip plans itself. Har Har Mahadev!
