Mumbai to Tirupati is either a 1 hour 50 minute direct flight or 18 to 24 hours on a train to Renigunta, and the choice decides whether two days is enough. By air, two days covers Tirumala darshan plus Tiruchanur and Srikalahasti. By train, two days on the ground means four days away from Mumbai.
Here are the flights and train numbers, how to get up the ghat, which darshan to book from Mumbai and how far ahead, and a two-day plan that works.
IndiGo and Air India fly Mumbai to Tirupati direct in about 1 hour 45 to 50 minutes, with several departures spread through the day. Fares on quiet weekdays start around ₹3,300 one way and most dates sit between ₹5,000 and ₹6,500. Festival weeks and Fridays cost more.
The alternative the IRCTC packages use is flying to Chennai and driving. Chennai to Tirupati is about 135 km, 3 hours by road. It only makes sense when the direct fare is high or you want Srikalahasti on the way in.
| Option | Time | Ballpark per person, one way |
|---|---|---|
| Direct flight to Tirupati | about 1 hr 50 min | ₹3,300 to ₹6,500 |
| Flight to Chennai, then road | about 2 hrs plus 3 hrs | fare plus taxi share |
| IRCTC 1 night 2 day air package | Saturday departures | about ₹14,800, darshan included |
The booking order from Mumbai, in sequence:
Pick the darshan date and grab the ₹300 SED slot the day that month's quota opens.
Book the flight around it, out early on day one and back on the evening of day two.
Book a Tirupati town room for night one; the TTD hill rooms can be tried later as a bonus.
Add Tiruchanur and Srikalahasti to day two only once the first three are fixed.
Most Mumbai trains run to Renigunta Junction, 10 km from Tirupati, and a few continue to Tirupati itself. Four daily options:
22159 CSMT to Chennai Express: departs CSMT 12:45 pm, reaches Renigunta about 7:30 am next day. 18 hr 45 min, the quickest.
12163 LTT to Chennai Express: departs LTT 6:30 pm, Renigunta about 12:55 pm next day. 18 hr 25 min.
16351 LTT to Nagercoil Express: departs LTT 8:55 pm, Renigunta about 3:15 pm next day. 18 hr 20 min.
11027 CSMT to Chennai Mail: departs CSMT 11:45 pm, Renigunta a little after midnight on the second night. About 24 hr 30 min.
3AC fares sit in the low thousands per person; check IRCTC for the exact figure on your date. From Renigunta, autos and APSRTC buses run to Tirupati in about 20 minutes.
Tirumala is 20 km up the ghat road, about an hour by bus. APSRTC runs from the Tirupati bus stand and the railway station at a frequency of a few minutes through the day, with 15 to 30 minute gaps late at night.
Fare: about ₹90 one way or ₹160 return non-AC; ₹110 and ₹200 for AC.
Private vehicles climb on the newer ghat road and come down on the older one. Police enforce a minimum of about 40 minutes for the climb, so nobody races it.
Walkers take the Alipiri steps; a free APSRTC shuttle runs from the station to Alipiri every half hour.
For the airport, station and the Alipiri end in more detail, see how to reach Tirumala.
Day 1, 6 am: fly out of Mumbai, land by 8:30, APSRTC or taxi up the ghat, on the hill by 10:30.
Day 1, afternoon: ₹300 Special Entry Darshan in your booked slot, laddu counter, evening on the Mada streets.
Day 1, night: sleep in Tirupati town, where rooms are easier than TTD cottages on the hill.
Day 2, morning: Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanur, 5 km from town, open about 4:50 am to 9:30 pm, from 3:30 am on Fridays. Tradition says the Tirumala visit is complete only after this.
Day 2, late morning: Srikalahasti, 36 km away, open 6 am to 9 pm, with Rahu-Ketu pooja slots through the day.
Day 2, evening: flight home, or the Chennai road if that is your ticket.
Darshan details, the queue types and Tirumala's rules live on our Tirupati darshan timings page.
With elders: fly direct, book SED for day one, sleep in Tirupati town and do Tiruchanur only on day two. Skip Srikalahasti.
On a budget: 22159 out on a Tuesday, sarva darshan on Thursday morning, 12163 or 16351 back. Four days, under half the air fare.
On a tight schedule: the IRCTC Saturday air package at about ₹14,800, which bundles the darshan and transfers.
Avoid: flying in on a Friday or Saturday for the free queue. Weekends and school holidays run 6 to 10 hours; Tuesday to Thursday are the light days.
Our Mumbai pilgrimage planner places Tirupati against the shorter options.
Take the first flight and you need no Mumbai hotel. For a late-night train, our guide to staying near CSMT and LTT covers the station side. In Tirupati, book the town for night one; TTD rooms on the hill are a lottery for a two-day trip.
Fix the darshan date, fly around it, and Tirupati from Mumbai is a clean two days. Govinda, Govinda.
