From Mumbai, the simplest way to Dwarka is the Saurashtra Mail (22945): about 17 hours overnight, ending a short auto ride from Dwarkadhish. Flying to Rajkot means about an hour in the air plus a 215–235 km drive. This guide compares both, then plans three days across Nageshwar, Bet Dwarka and Somnath.
The Saurashtra Mail (22945) runs Mumbai Central to Okha, 990 km in about 17 hours 50 minutes, with Dwarka the second-last halt. It leaves in the evening and reaches Dwarka around midday, so you sleep through Gujarat and arrive for the evening darshan window. Book AC berths well ahead; it fills fast through November.
For Somnath, the railhead is Veraval Junction, 6–7 km from the temple. A weekly superfast from Bandra Terminus leaves Saturday evening and reaches Veraval on Sunday afternoon, 937 km in about 17 hours 45 minutes. On other days, change at Rajkot, or do Dwarka first and drive down the coast.
| Option | Route | Runs | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saurashtra Mail 22945 | Mumbai Central → Dwarka / Okha | Daily | ~17 hrs to Dwarka |
| Bandra–Veraval weekly superfast | Bandra Terminus → Veraval | Saturday | ~17 hrs 45 min |
| Flight + taxi | Mumbai → Rajkot → Dwarka | Varies by airline | ~1 hr air + 4–5 hrs road |
No airport serves Dwarka or Somnath, so every flight ends with a drive. Rajkot's Hirasar airport has the most Mumbai connections; from there Dwarka is 215–235 km (about 4–5 hours) and Somnath roughly 190 km.
| Airport | To Dwarka | To Somnath | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rajkot (Hirasar) | 215–235 km, 4–5 hrs | ~190 km, ~4 hrs | Arrival from Mumbai |
| Jamnagar | 135–141 km, ~3 hrs | far — go via Dwarka | Arrival, if a flight fits |
| Diu | far — not practical | ~85 km, 1.5–2 hrs | Flying home after Somnath |
Dwarkadhish opens with Mangla aarti at 6:30 AM, and the morning window runs until about 12:30–1 PM. The temple then closes for the afternoon, reopening at 5 PM and running to around 9:30 PM, with the evening aarti near 7 PM.
Mangla at 6:30 AM is the calmest darshan of the day; the 7 PM aarti draws the biggest crowd. Our Dwarkadhish darshan timings guide lists all six aartis and the dress code.
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is about 17 km from town on the Okha road, a 30-minute drive. It keeps an afternoon break like Dwarkadhish, so go in the morning after Mangla aarti.
Bet Dwarka, Krishna's island home, lies off Okha, about 30 km further. Since 2024 the 2.3 km Sudarshan Setu lets you drive straight across; the older ferry boats run roughly 6 AM to 7 PM and stop in rough weather.
Rukmini Devi temple, 2 km away, fits on the way back; the full loop takes 4–5 hours by car.
Dwarka to Somnath is about 230 km via Porbandar, a 5-hour drive on the coastal highway. There is no useful direct train, so this leg is by road: taxi, package coach or GSRTC bus.
Somnath's darshan runs 6 AM to 10 PM, with aartis at 7 AM, 12 noon and 7 PM. Leave Dwarka by 11 AM to reach Prabhas Patan for the 7 PM aarti, followed by the "Jay Somnath" light and sound show at 8 PM (not held in the monsoon).
Kartik Purnima falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, and Somnath's five-day Lokmela peaks that night with a midnight Mahapooja. Berths and rooms vanish weeks ahead, so read the Somnath Kartik Purnima mela guide before fixing dates that week. Mondays are also noticeably busier.
With elders: Saurashtra Mail in 2AC or 3AC to Dwarka, then a private car for everything else. No airport queues, and the car waits at every temple.
On a budget: Sleeper on the Mail, GSRTC bus Dwarka to Somnath, and the weekly superfast back if a Sunday return suits. Train-based packages from Mumbai run roughly ₹13,500–₹20,000 per person for 4–6 days with 3AC berths, hotels and sightseeing.
Tight schedule: Fly Mumbai → Rajkot, car to Dwarka the same afternoon, Somnath on day two, fly home from Diu or Rajkot on day three.
Avoid: flying into Jamnagar hoping for a same-day Mangla aarti; the drive plus the 1 PM closure wastes the morning. Skip Kartik Purnima week unless the mela is the point.
The same train-or-flight logic drives our Mumbai to Tirupati guide.
Day 1 — Dwarka. Arrive on the Mail around midday, or fly to Rajkot and drive. Rest through the closure, darshan at the 5 PM reopening, the 7 PM aarti, then Gomti Ghat.
Day 2 — Nageshwar, Bet Dwarka, then Somnath. Mangla aarti at 6:30 AM, Nageshwar by 8, Bet Dwarka via the Sudarshan Setu, back past Rukmini temple. Leave by 11 AM for the 230 km coast drive; Somnath for the 7 PM aarti and 8 PM show.
Day 3 — Somnath and home. The 7 AM aarti, Triveni Sangam (1.5 km) and Bhalka Tirth, then Diu (about 85 km) or Rajkot (about 190 km) for a flight, or Veraval Junction for the train.
Add a fourth day for Kartik Purnima or a Shravan Monday, when queues run well over an hour.
In Dwarka, stay within walking distance of Dwarkadhish and Gomti Ghat, so the 6:30 AM Mangla aarti is a stroll, not a pre-dawn taxi. In Somnath, the lanes around the temple and Triveni Road are five minutes from the 7 PM aarti and the show.
Mind the afternoon closure, book the Mail early, and the three days fall into place. Jai Dwarkadhish.
