Mumbai to Ujjain and Omkareshwar in two days works one way: sleep in Ujjain on night one, take the 4 AM Bhasma Aarti, drive about 140 km to Omkareshwar, and finish at Indore, not back in Ujjain.
The train in is the 12961 Avantika Express out of Mumbai Central at 8:55 PM; the flight is a 1 hour 30 minute hop to Indore followed by a 55 km taxi. This guide settles which one to take and how the two Jyotirlingas fit the clock.
Both trains leave Mumbai Central (BCT) late in the evening and halt at Ujjain Junction (UJN) before Indore. Book Ujjain, not Indore, as your destination for the inbound leg.
| Train | Leaves Mumbai Central | Reaches | Runs | Class to book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12961 Avantika Express | 8:55 PM | Ujjain Jn about 7:30 AM, Indore 9:05 AM | Daily | 3A, about 750 km to Ujjain |
| 12227 Indore Duronto | 11:10 PM | Indore 10:20 AM, Ujjain about an hour earlier | Thursday, Saturday | AC only (3E, 3A, 2A, 1A) |
Aggregator snapshots list 3A at around ₹1,100 to ₹1,300 on both trains for the full run, so budget about that per head and confirm on IRCTC. One timetable site shows an earlier 7:10 PM Avantika departure; the 8:55 PM figure is the one most listings and the NTES-style trackers agree on, but check before you leave for the station.
For the way home, the 12228 Duronto leaves Indore at 9:00 PM on Friday and Sunday and reaches Mumbai Central at 8:20 AM. The 12962 Avantika runs daily, out of Indore at 5:45 PM and through Ujjain around 6:50 PM.
Ujjain has no commercial airport, so the flight lands at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport (IDR), Indore. IndiGo operates most of the roughly six to nine nonstops a day, with Air India and Star Air also showing on the route; block time is 1 hour 25 to 40 minutes.
Fares swing hard. Cheap weekdays show one-way seats from about ₹4,000, while typical and festival-week prices sit at ₹10,000 and above. The earliest IndiGo departure is around 6:35 AM, which puts you in Ujjain before 10 AM.
IDR to Ujjain is 54 to 57 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes on the four-lane highway. Operator rate cards from mid-2026 quote a sedan at roughly ₹1,700 to ₹2,000 and an SUV at ₹2,300 to ₹2,500, one way.
The three places sit in a lopsided triangle, and the lopsidedness is the whole plan. Indore is the hub; Ujjain is north of it and Omkareshwar south, so the two temples are never on the same side of the airport.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Indore airport → Ujjain | 54–57 km | about 1 h 15 min |
| Ujjain → Omkareshwar (via Indore, Barwah) | about 140–145 km | 3 to 4 hours |
| Omkareshwar → Indore airport or station | about 80–87 km | about 2 hours |
| Omkareshwar → Ujjain (if you insist on returning) | about 140 km | 3 to 4 hours |
Plan A, train in (the budget weekend). Friday night Avantika, Saturday in Ujjain, Sunday aarti and Omkareshwar.
Friday 8:55 PM — board 12961 at Mumbai Central; sleep.
Saturday about 7:30 AM — Ujjain Jn; the mandir area is 2 km by prepaid auto.
Saturday day — general darshan, Mahakal Lok, Kal Bhairav, Ram Ghat evening aarti; sleep within a kilometre of the mandir.
Sunday 2:30 AM — report for the 4:00 to 6:00 AM Bhasma Aarti.
Sunday 7:00 AM — leave by car; Mandhata Island by about 10:30 AM.
Sunday 2:30 PM — leave Omkareshwar; Indore by 5 PM for a flight, or the 9:00 PM Duronto 12228.
Plan B, flight in (Omkareshwar first). This reverses the loop and removes the post-aarti dash.
Saturday 6:35 AM — Mumbai to Indore; land about 8:10 AM.
Saturday 8:30 AM — drive about 80 km, 2 hours south to Omkareshwar; darshan before the 12:20 PM break or after 4:30 PM.
Saturday 3:00 PM — drive 140 km north to Ujjain; check in by 7 PM.
Sunday 4:00 AM — Bhasma Aarti, then Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat on foot.
Sunday noon — 55 km to Indore airport for an afternoon flight home.
The Shri Omkareshwar Mandir Trust schedule begins with Mangal Aarti at 4:30 AM and morning darshan from 5:00 AM to about 12:20 PM. Evening Shringar darshan runs from about 4:30 to 9:30 PM, followed by Shayan Aarti, with the trust noting that timings move on special days.
The Jyotirlinga stands on Mandhata Island in the Narmada. You cross on foot over the 235 m Mamleshwar Setu pedestrian bridge or by boat from the ghat, where the fare is small and settled on the spot.
A suspension footbridge nearby was shut in June 2026 after a cable clasp loosened, so ask at the ghat which crossings are open on your day.
Yatris take both the island Jyotirlinga and Mamleshwar on the south bank. Mondays bring the 4 PM Sawari procession and heavy crowds; cross before 7 AM on a Monday. Our Omkareshwar day plan from Ujjain covers the paid lane and the parikrama.
With elders — Plan B. Fly both ways, do Omkareshwar fresh on day one, and sleep within 500 m of Mahakaleshwar so the 2:30 AM walk is short.
On a budget — Plan A on the Avantika in 3A both ways, a shared car for the Omkareshwar leg, and the free darshan queue on Saturday.
On a tight weekend — Friday night train in, Sunday evening flight out of Indore. You lose no working day.
A group of four to six — a private taxi from Mumbai is a long first day, about 650 km, but it then serves the 3 AM drop and the whole southern loop for one fare.
Avoid — returning to Ujjain after Omkareshwar, a Shravan Monday or Mahashivratri without a confirmed aarti pass, and a bus package that skips the aarti slot.
Mumbai operators sell this exact loop as a bus product. A 2-day Mumbai-to-Mumbai bus package is quoted at about ₹9,499 per head, rising to around ₹11,499 when the Bhasma Aarti slot is included and booked 45 days ahead. AC sleeper bus versions reach about ₹12,499, non-AC seater about ₹7,999.
Ex-Indore 3-day cab packages run from about ₹4,000 to ₹12,500 per head, before your own Mumbai transport. Build it yourself and the numbers look like this for two people:
| Item | Train plan (per head) | Flight plan (per head) |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai to Ujjain/Indore and back | about ₹2,400 in 3A | about ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 |
| Car for day two, Ujjain → Omkareshwar → Indore | about ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 shared | same |
| Airport or station transfers | about ₹200 | about ₹1,000 shared |
| Bhasma Aarti permission | about ₹200, as quoted | same |
The bus package wins on price for a solo yatri; the self-built train plan wins for two or more. Our Ujjain-only two-day version is the fallback when Omkareshwar does not fit.
Night one is always Ujjain, within walking distance of Mahakaleshwar, because autos are thin at 2:30 AM and you cannot afford to miss the gate. The aarti runs 4:00 to 6:00 AM and passes go only through the official portal 30 days ahead; our Bhasma Aarti booking guide has the rules and the impostor sites to avoid.
Rooms within a kilometre of the mandir sell first. Book the night your aarti slot is confirmed, and ask for a 2 AM wake-up call rather than trusting a phone alarm after a train night.
Book the aarti pass first, then the train or flight, and let Indore be the exit. Har Har Mahadev!
