Kalaram Mandir in Panchavati opens for kakad aarti at about 5:30 am and closes around 10 pm, with mangal aarti at 8 am and shej aarti at 7 pm. It is 10 km from Nashik Road station and 3 km from CBS. There is no VIP line, so arrive before 6 and walk Panchavati afterwards.
Kalaram, the "black Ram", is the chief temple of Panchavati, the stretch of Nashik where Ram, Sita and Lakshman are held to have lived in exile. The present black-stone temple was built around 1782 by Sardar Rangarao Odhekar, on the site of an older wooden shrine; some records say 1788–1792.
Inside stand black idols of Ram, Sita and Lakshman. The sanctum sits behind 14 steps, one for each year of exile, within a plain dressed-stone wall about 17 feet high. On 2 March 1930 Dr Ambedkar led the Kalaram Satyagraha at these gates for temple entry.
Darshan is free and the queue is a single open line. Our Panchavati walking guide covers the lanes around it; this post is about the mandir's own clock.
Listings disagree on whether the doors open at 5 or 5:30, so treat the kakad time as the practical opening. The Sansthan shifts the schedule on Ram Navami, Ekadashi and other festivals.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 5:30 – 6:30 am | Kakad aarti |
| 7:00 – 8:00 am | Sanai vadan and bhupali |
| 8:00 am | Mangal aarti |
| 10:30 am – 1:00 pm | Mahanyas pooja and maha aarti |
| 3:00 – 5:00 pm | Bhajan |
| 7:00 – 8:00 pm | Shej (sandhya) aarti |
| 8:00 – 10:00 pm | Kirtan, then closing |
The two aartis worth planning around are kakad at 5:30 am and shej at 7 pm. Between mangal aarti and the maha aarti the sanctum is open and quiet. Midday on a weekday you may have it almost to yourself.
Nashik Road (station code NK) is the mainline station on the Mumbai–Bhusawal route, and it is about 10 km from Kalaram. Panchavati is on the far side of the Godavari from the station.
Auto from Nashik Road: 25–40 minutes depending on the hour. Autos are metered; ask for the meter before leaving.
City bus: CityLink buses run from the station towards Panchavati, slower but cheap.
From CBS (Central Bus Stand): about 3 km, a 10-minute auto or a 35-minute walk across the river.
By car: parking is in the lanes around Panchavati, tight after 8 am.
If you are arriving by train at dawn and continuing to Trimbakeshwar, our Nashik Road to Trimbakeshwar half-day plan fits after this morning.
Everything below is within a few hundred metres of Kalaram. Do it in this order and you are done by 9.
5:30 am, Kalaram kakad aarti. Thirty minutes. Stand to the side of the sanctum steps.
6:15 am, Sita Gufa. Opens at 6 am, closes at noon, reopens 5–8 pm. A narrow stair down to a small cave shrine; not for anyone with knee trouble.
6:45 am, Goraram Mandir. The "white Ram", a marble-idol temple a short lane away, open with the neighbourhood from early morning.
7:15 am, Kapaleshwar Mahadev. The Shiva temple above Ramkund, famous for having no Nandi at its door. Roughly 6 am to 8 pm; Monday evenings bring a palkhi.
7:45 am, Ramkund. Snan or tarpan at the kund, open from 6 am. Pujaris sit on the steps; our Ramkund guide lists what each ritual costs.
8:30 am, breakfast in the Panchavati lanes, then on to Trimbakeshwar or Saptashrungi.
Kalaram keeps things simple:
No paid darshan. No VIP pass, no special line. The one queue moves fast except on Ram Navami, Ekadashi and weekend evenings.
Dress: no written code, but modest clothing is expected. Shorts and sleeveless tops draw looks, not refusals.
Photography: allowed in the courtyard. Do not photograph inside the sanctum or anyone at worship.
Footwear comes off at the gate. Carry a small bag for shoes if you plan to walk straight on to Sita Gufa.
Prasad and flowers are sold in the lane outside; there is no Sansthan counter inside the mandir.
Ram Navami in 2027 falls on Thursday, 15 April. The mandir runs extended hours that day, and the next afternoon the Ram rath and Garud rath are pulled from Kalaram through the old city, a procession that dates to the Peshwa era. Festivities continue to Chaitra Purnima.
Darshan on Ram Navami itself means hours in line. Come the week before for a quiet visit, or come for the rath and accept the crowd. Our Nashik 1, 3 or 7 day planner shows how to fit either into a longer yatra.
With elderly parents: taxi to the gate for mangal aarti at 8 am, skip Sita Gufa's stairs, do Ramkund by car.
On a budget: train to Nashik Road, CityLink bus to Panchavati, the full walking loop.
On a tight schedule: kakad aarti, Kapaleshwar, Ramkund, out by 7:30 and on to Trimbakeshwar.
Avoid: a Saturday evening between 6 and 8, when shej aarti and weekend crowds meet.

For a 5:30 am start, stay in Panchavati itself or within a short auto ride on the Godavari's north bank. Hotels near Nashik Road station are convenient for late trains but put a 10 km ride between you and kakad aarti. See where to stay in Nashik for the Panchavati, city centre and highway options.
Reach before the first bell, and Kalaram gives you Panchavati the way it was meant to be seen, in the dark-to-dawn hour. Jai Shri Ram.
