Where Was Sai Baba Before Shirdi? The Truth Is — Nobody Knows

We know Sai Baba from Shirdi. But one question rises in almost every devotee’s mind — where was Baba before Shirdi? Where was he born? Who were his parents?

And the most astonishing part: no one has the answer. And Baba himself wanted it that way. 🚩

🛕 What we do know

c. 1854 — a 16-year-old arrives
A young man came to Shirdi and sat under a neem tree in deep penance for hours — heedless of heat or cold. The villagers were astonished at such severe sadhana in one so young.
~3 years later — he vanishes
The youth suddenly disappeared. Some time later he was seen near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
c. 1858 — he returns, for good
He came back to Shirdi with Chand Patil's wedding procession. This time he never left — for the next 60 years, until his mahasamadhi in 1918, Baba never once left Shirdi.

🤔 But before all of that?

The fourth chapter of the Satcharitra says it plainly: “No one knows anything of Baba’s parents, his birth, or his birthplace.”

People asked — often. But Baba always turned the question aside: a vague reply, sometimes a riddle. To him the question simply didn’t matter. Some say he was born in Pathri (Maharashtra); some say Tamil Nadu; some believe Baba was never born at all — that he appeared as an avatar of Dattatreya.

🕊️ Why did Baba hide it?

Baba’s message is hidden in that silence. When someone asked “Who are you? Where did you come from?”, his answer was that this body, this name, this birthplace — all of it is changeable. The real identity is the soul’s.

Perhaps that is Baba’s greatest teaching of all — keep Shraddha and Saburi (faith and patience), and the rest takes care of itself.

This body, this name, this birthplace — all of it changes. Keep faith and patience; the rest happens on its own.

Sai Baba's message

When you visit Shirdi
You won't find Baba's origin in any record — and that's the point. Stand before the Samadhi, and remember it was never about where he came from.
