Delhi to Ujjain is one overnight train. The 12416 New Delhi–Indore Intercity leaves platform 4 at 9:50 pm every day and halts at Ujjain Junction at 8:20 the next morning, about ten and a half hours later.
Flying to Indore cuts the travel to a morning but adds a 55 km road leg, and the drive is 700 km and a full day.
This guide gives the current options and a three-day plan that fits Bhasma Aarti and Omkareshwar around them.
Two trains run every day and both arrive in the morning. The Intercity is the one to book; the Malwa Express is the fallback when it is waitlisted. Three more trains pass through Delhi stations on fixed weekdays, useful if your date happens to match.
| Train | Delhi departure | Ujjain arrival | Runs | Route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12416 NDLS–Indore Intercity | New Delhi 9:50 pm | 8:20 am next day | Daily | Mathura, Kota, Nagda |
| 12920 Malwa Express | New Delhi 8:30 pm | 11:20 am next day | Daily | Agra, Jhansi, Bhopal |
| 14310 Ujjaini Express | Hazrat Nizamuddin, evening | morning, day 2 | Tue, Wed | via Kota |
| 14318 Dehradun–Indore | Hazrat Nizamuddin, evening | morning, day 2 | Fri, Sat | via Kota |
12416 halts 10 minutes at Kota and 15 at Nagda, where the engine reverses; do not panic when the train starts moving backwards. 3AC is the sensible class for a family.
Malwa Express (12920) starts from Katra, so Delhi berths are often waitlisted until the chart. It is the better choice only if you are joining from Agra or Bhopal.
The return 12415 leaves Indore at 5:10 pm and passes Ujjain in the early evening, reaching New Delhi before office hours.
Timings shift at each timetable change. Recheck on IRCTC the week you travel, and read our overview of reaching Ujjain from Delhi, Mumbai and Bhopal if you are combining cities.
Ujjain has no airport. Delhi to Indore is about 1 hour 30 minutes in the air, and with IndiGo and Air India together there are roughly nine or ten nonstops a day, from before dawn to late evening.
Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is on the Ujjain side of Indore, 55 km from the mandir, which is an hour and a quarter by taxi.
Fly when:
You have three days, not four. Morning flight, Mahakal darshan by noon, and the whole third day for Omkareshwar.
Elders are travelling. Door to mandir in under five hours, no station stairs at Nagda or Kota.
Kartik dates are waitlisted. November trains fill weeks out; flights do not.
The weak point is the last leg. Prepaid taxi counters at Indore quote widely, and a late landing leaves you bargaining at midnight.
The drive is 700 to 770 km depending on route, and 12 to 14 hours with meals. Two routes are used:
Via Jaipur, Kota and Jhalawar. The shorter and flatter route, mostly four-lane, about 700 km.
Via Agra, Gwalior, Shivpuri and Guna. Slightly longer, with a tiring two-lane stretch after Shivpuri. Choose it only if Gwalior is on your list.
Leave Delhi by 4 am to clear Gurugram and reach Kota for lunch.
Drive only as a group of four or five, or when you are adding Omkareshwar and Maheshwar; for two people the train is cheaper and arrives rested. Overnight sleeper buses also run Delhi to Indore, but at 14 hours or more they are the slowest option here.
The 4 am Bhasma Aarti is why most Delhi Yatris come. Passes are issued only on the temple's official portal, ₹200 per person, and the window opens about a month before the date. No hotel, agent or tout can book one.
Fix the aarti date first and build the train around it.
If the date is sold out, Mahakal still gives darshan: the ₹250 Sheeghra Darshan ticket takes a shorter queue through the day, and the evening Sandhya and Shayan aartis need no pass. The steps are in our Bhasma Aarti booking guide.

Day 0, 9:50 pm: board 12416 at New Delhi. Dinner before boarding; the pantry is basic.
Day 1: Ujjain 8:20 am. Check in near the mandir, Sheeghra or general darshan by 11 am. Afternoon Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath by taxi. Evening Mahakal Lok corridor and the 10:30 pm Shayan Aarti. Sleep by 11:30.
Day 2: Bhasma Aarti at 4 am. Breakfast, then leave by 9 am for Omkareshwar, 140 km, about 3 to 3.5 hours. Darshan at Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar, Narmada aarti at dusk, sleep in Omkareshwar.
Day 3: Early darshan, then Indore, 85 km, about 2 to 2.5 hours. Khajrana Ganesh on the way to the airport for an evening flight, or 12415 from Indore at 5:10 pm.
Our Ujjain to Omkareshwar guide has the Omkareshwar timings, and the Khajrana Ganesh guide covers that last stop before the flight.
With elderly parents: fly both ways, one taxi for all three days, sleep in Ujjain both nights and do Omkareshwar as a day trip.
On a budget: 12416 sleeper down, 12415 back, bhaktniwas in Ujjain. Travel under ₹2,500 a head.
On a tight weekend: Friday 12416, Saturday darshan and Mahakal Lok, Sunday Bhasma Aarti, 12415 home Sunday evening. Skip Omkareshwar.
Avoid Kartik Mondays and the Diwali week around 8 November 2026, and Kartik Purnima on 24 November 2026, when the general queue runs three to four hours.
Stay within a kilometre of the mandir so the 2 am walk to the Bhasma Aarti gate is short. The temple's bhaktniwas and the Mahakal Dharamshala are cheapest and fill with the aarti passes; book them the day your pass confirms.
Freeganj hotels are ten minutes away by auto, with AC and parking. In Omkareshwar, the sansthan dharamshalas and the hotels on the Mamleshwar side are the quiet choice.
Fix the aarti date, then the train, then the room, and Delhi to Mahakal becomes three calm days with two Jyotirlingas. Har Har Mahadev.
