Mahakaleshwar is about 1.5–2 km from Ujjain Junction, a 20–25 minute walk or a 5–10 minute auto, and the Mahakal Lok entrance where the general queue begins is a little further, about 2–2.5 km. Shared autos take ₹30–50 a seat, a reserved auto ₹100–150, and both stands run through the night.
This guide covers the fares, the cloak room on Platform 1, where the temple lockers are, and which trains land you at the right hour for darshan.
Railway listings give the temple as 1.6–2 km from Ujjain Junction (code UJN), and the Nandi Dwar of Mahakal Lok, where the general queue now begins, as about 2.5 km. On foot that is 20–25 minutes through the old city, with Mahakal Marg starting within about 700 m of the station.
Nobody publishes a turn-by-turn route, and the lanes are narrow and busy, so ask at the auto stand for Mahakal Marg and follow the flow of Yatris. The walk is pleasant before 7 AM and after dark; at midday most people take an auto.
Without luggage: walk, especially for the 6 AM darshan when the lanes are empty.
With luggage: reserved auto or e-rickshaw to the hotel first; the queue area has no space for bags.
Dewas Gate bus stand is directly opposite the station, so bus arrivals use the same route and the same autos.
Autos in Ujjain do not run on a meter, so agree the fare before you sit. Stands operate round the clock outside Platform 1 and Platform 8, which matters for Bhasma aarti arrivals at 1–2 AM. Expect to pay more before dawn, since nobody quotes a published night rate.
| Ride from Ujjain Junction | Typical fare (2026) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Shared auto, per seat | ₹30–50 | 5–10 min |
| Reserved auto to temple or temple-side hotel | ₹100–150 | 5–10 min |
| E-rickshaw | ₹10–50 depending on distance | 10 min |
| Cycle rickshaw | ₹15–25 | 15 min |
App cabs are the weak point. Local guides report that Ola and Uber do not operate reliably in Ujjain, and we could not confirm Rapido; treat the apps as a bonus, not a plan. A prepaid auto booth is listed at the station, but confirm it is staffed when you arrive.
Ujjain Junction has an Indian Railways cloak room on Platform 1. The rules are the standard ones: a valid journey ticket, a bag that locks, and a receipt you must keep.
Rates are set per station and are low, a few tens of rupees per bag per day; we could not confirm the Ujjain tariff or hours, so ask at the counter.
At the temple, lockers sit at Mansarovar Bhavan beside Gate 4 and at Avantika Gate 1, with shoe stands near the main gate. They have been free, but a July 2026 tender put locker services on a revenue-sharing contract, so a small charge may appear. Take only your wallet and a water bottle into the queue.
For general darshan the route on busy days runs Nandi Dwar near the Triveni Museum → Mahakal Lok → Mansarovar Bhavan → the tunnel → Ganesh Mandapam, with the exit near Bade Ganesh and Harsiddhi. Entry is free. On a normal weekday it takes 45–90 minutes; on Mondays and festivals, 3–4 hours.
Sheeghra darshan: ₹250 per person online or at the official counter, cutting the wait to under an hour on busy days. Buy only from official channels; a ticket racket was raided in June 2026. See is the ₹250 ticket worth it.
Bhasma aarti, 4–6 AM: online pass only, released about 30 days ahead; reporting at 1–2 AM, men in dhoti, women in saree. Our booking guide has the current rules.
Dress: shoulders and knees covered for general darshan. Full rules in the Mahakaleshwar logistics guide.
Road widening at the main Avantika gate, from 12 to 24 m, began on 30 September 2026 for Simhastha 2028. Expect dust and changed approaches on that side.
Ujjain Junction now has eight platforms for long-distance trains after the 2026 yard remodelling. The table shows the arrivals that matter for darshan timing; confirm on NTES, as these come from timetable aggregators.
| Train | From | Arrives Ujjain | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12914 Trishatabdi Exp | Nagpur | about 04:25 | 6 AM general darshan, too late for Bhasma aarti |
| 12961 Avantika Exp | Mumbai Central | about 07:30 | morning darshan |
| 12227 Duronto | Mumbai Central | about 08:40 | morning darshan |
| 69212 MEMU | Indore | about 09:45 | day trip from Indore |
| 12920 Malwa Exp | Katra / Delhi | about 10:15–10:30 | Bhog aarti hour |
| 12913 Trishatabdi Exp | Indore | about 22:00 | night before Bhasma aarti |
No train arrives between about 22:15 and 04:25, so a 4 AM Bhasma aarti means arriving the previous evening and sleeping near the temple. Departures to note: 12919 Malwa to Delhi at 13:45, 12962 Avantika to Mumbai at 18:50, 20911 Vande Bharat to Nagpur at 06:50. For the wider picture, see how to reach Ujjain.
Arriving at dawn, leaving by evening: cloak room on Platform 1, walk or shared auto, general darshan by 9, Harsiddhi and Bade Ganesh on foot, back for an afternoon train.
Bhasma aarti pass holder: arrive the evening before, hotel within a kilometre, walk to the gate at 1:30 AM. Autos exist at that hour but fares climb.
With elders or heavy bags: reserved auto or taxi to the hotel first, then the Sheeghra darshan ticket. Avoid the walk.
Changing trains, under 3 hours: possible only on a weekday with the ₹250 ticket; on a Monday the queue alone can eat the layover.
Avoid Mondays, Shravan and festival days unless you hold a pass, and avoid relying on the alternative stations: Vikram Nagar is about 4–6 km and Chintaman Ganesh about 6 km from the temple, with few trains.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
The station and the temple are close enough that you can stay near either. For Bhasma aarti, stay by the temple; for a late train, stay by the station.
Dharamshalas and Bhakt Niwas within a kilometre of the temple, roughly ₹100–600.
Basic hotels on Station Road and around Bada Telipura, a 5–10 minute walk from the platforms, about ₹500–1,200.
Mid-range near the station from about ₹2,000–3,500, with a few upscale options within an 8-minute walk.
Rooms within a kilometre of Mahakal sell out first for any Monday and all of Shravan.
Step off the train, leave the bag, and walk to Mahakal with nothing in your hands. Har Har Mahadev.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
