The Mahakal Sheeghra Darshan ticket costs ₹250 per person and puts you in a shorter line that reaches the Nandi hall in roughly 30 to 60 minutes on a normal day. The free line the same day runs two to five hours. It is worth it for almost every Yatri who has a single day in Ujjain.
The Sheeghra Darshan ticket is the temple committee's official paid queue. It is not a tout's "VIP pass" and it is not a Bhasma Aarti seat. You pay ₹250 per person, including children who need their own ticket in the line.
What you get is a shorter, barricaded path that joins the mandapam closer to the Jyotirlinga. You still stand outside the sanctum, as everyone does. The general line and the paid line both end at a railing, not at the Shivling.
What it does not include:
No garbhagriha entry. Sanctum entry is closed for general Yatris since July 2023, whatever ticket you hold.
No Bhasma Aarti. That is a separate, free, pre-booked pass with its own 4 am reporting time.
No sandhya or shayan aarti seat. Those evening aartis carry their own ₹250 booking since February 2026.
If your aim is darshan plus one evening aarti, budget two tickets. If you only want to see Mahakal and leave, one ₹250 ticket is enough.
You can book the ticket two ways, and both are legitimate.
Online, on the committee's portal. The official site of the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee sells the ₹250 ticket against a photo ID. You pick a date and slot, pay, and carry the e-ticket plus the original ID.
Counter, on the day. Counters near Gate 4 on the Mahakal Lok side issue the same ticket. On weekdays this works fine. On Mondays, weekends and festival weeks the counter queue itself becomes a 30-minute job.
Book online if you are arriving on a Monday, a Saturday, in Shravan, around Mahashivratri or Nag Panchami. Buy at the counter if you are arriving mid-week and your plans may slip. Third-party sites that charge ₹500 or more for the "same" ticket are adding a service fee; the committee price is ₹250.
| Situation | Free line | ₹250 line |
|---|---|---|
| Plain weekday, 8 am | 1.5 to 2 hours | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Weekday afternoon | 2 to 3 hours | 45 to 60 minutes |
| Monday or Shravan | 3 to 4 hours | 60 to 90 minutes |
| Mahashivratri week | 5 hours and more | 2 hours and more |
The free-line figures are what Yatris report, not a committee promise. Read our guide to Mahakal on Mondays and in Shravan before picking your day.
Most ticket holders are routed through Gate 4, the entry on the Mahakal Lok side near Nandi Dwar. Some days the ticket directs you to Gate 1 instead; follow the gate printed on your ticket, not a guide's advice.
Here is the sequence on an ordinary morning:
Reach Mahakal Lok, leave shoes and phones at the locker counter. Phones are not allowed past the security line.
Show the e-ticket and original ID at the Gate 4 scanner.
Walk the barricaded paid lane. It bypasses the long switchbacks the free line uses.
Reach the mandapam, take darshan from the railing for about half a minute, and exit by the marked path.
Leave 90 minutes for the whole thing, including the locker and the walk back. Our free versus paid queue guide has the locker and dress rules in detail.
The paid line is faster on every day, but it is not immune to the calendar. Expect it to stretch past an hour on:
Mondays, every week of the year.
Shravan, especially Shravan Mondays and the sawari days.
Mahashivratri and the Shivratri week.
Nag Panchami, when the Nagchandreshwar temple on the top floor opens for its one day.
The days around Diwali, Kartik Purnima and Simhastha preparations.
On those days the committee also changes gates and sometimes suspends counter sales. Check the committee's notice board the evening before, and book the earliest slot you can.
With elderly parents: buy the ₹250 ticket for everyone. An hour of standing is manageable; three hours is not. Ask for the wheelchair at Gate 4 if needed.
On a tight budget, mid-week: the free line at 5 am, right after Bhasma Aarti, is often under 90 minutes. Save the ₹250.
On a tight schedule: book online for the first morning slot, and plan Harsiddhi and Kaal Bhairav after. You will be out by 9 am.
Coming for Bhasma Aarti anyway: you do not need this ticket. The aarti pass gives you darshan in the same visit. See what you get without a Bhasma Aarti pass.
Avoid buying from anyone outside the gates who offers "guaranteed" entry. The only sellers are the portal and the committee counters.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
Stay within a kilometre of Mahakal Lok so that a 6 am ticket slot does not need a taxi. The lanes around Harsiddhi, Begumbagh and the Mahakal Lok parking have dharamshalas and small hotels at every budget. If you are coming from Indore for the day, leave by 5 am and you still make the first slot.
Buy the ticket, take the early slot, and spend the saved hours at Harsiddhi and on the ghats instead of in a line. Har Har Mahadev.
