Ellora Caves stay open 6 AM–6 PM daily except Tuesday, Grishneshwar runs 5:30 AM–9 PM with a lunch break, and Bibi Ka Maqbara is open 8 AM–8 PM — three very different clocks to work around in one day.
Grishneshwar sits barely 1 km from Ellora and about 35 km (roughly an hour) from the city centre, which is what makes a single, well-sequenced day actually possible here. Three days opens up Ajanta and a Jyotirlinga add-on; here's how to decide which one fits your trip.
Ellora Caves run 6 AM to 6 PM and close entirely on Tuesdays — plan around this date specifically if Ellora is your priority. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga opens earlier, at 5:30 AM, closes for lunch between 12 and 1 PM, and reopens until 9 PM, giving you two windows rather than one continuous day.
Bibi Ka Maqbara, inside the city itself, runs 8 AM to 8 PM with no weekly closure, which makes it the easiest of the three to slot in at either end of the day.
Ellora Caves: 6 AM–6 PM, closed Tuesdays
Grishneshwar: 5:30 AM–9 PM, lunch break 12–1 PM
Bibi Ka Maqbara: 8 AM–8 PM, open daily
Since Grishneshwar sits just 1 km from Ellora, both about 35 km (around an hour) from central Sambhajinagar, a single day covering both is genuinely realistic if you leave early.
Start at Grishneshwar before its lunch break, then cover the short distance to Ellora, spend the bulk of the day among the caves, and be back in the city with enough daylight left for Bibi Ka Maqbara.
Morning: Grishneshwar darshan before 9 AM, avoiding both the crowd and the lunch closure
Midday to afternoon: Ellora Caves — budget 3–4 hours minimum for the major caves
Evening: Bibi Ka Maqbara, open until 8 PM, an easy stop back in the city
This works well if darshan plus a serious look at Ellora is the goal — it does not leave room for Ajanta, which sits considerably further out. See our Ellora Caves guide and Grishneshwar darshan timings for the specifics of each stop.
A three-day plan solves the two biggest limitations of the single day: Ajanta's distance and the wider Jyotirlinga circuit. Ajanta sits far enough from the city that it deserves its own dedicated day rather than a rushed add-on, and the three-Jyotirlinga loop (Grishneshwar, Trimbakeshwar, Bhimashankar) genuinely needs 2–3 days of driving on its own.
Day 1: Grishneshwar and Ellora, exactly as the one-day plan above
Day 2: Ajanta Caves as a full dedicated day, given the extra distance involved
Day 3: City sights — Bibi Ka Maqbara, Panchakki and the fort — at an unhurried pace, or the start of a Jyotirlinga extension if that's your priority
Ajanta itself runs 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, closing on Mondays — the reverse of Ellora's Tuesday closure, which is exactly why the two need separate days rather than a shared one.
Entry costs ₹40 for Indian visitors, plus a mandatory ₹25 shuttle from the parking area to the caves, and it's roughly 100 km (about 3 hours) from the city — too far to combine with Ellora in a single day without cutting both short.
Ajanta hours: 9 AM–5:30 PM, closed Mondays
Entry fee: ₹40 (Indian visitors), plus ₹25 shuttle
Distance: ~100 km, ~3 hours by road
Full timings for Ajanta are in our Ajanta Caves guide, and the complete three-Jyotirlinga logistics are in our dedicated 3-day circuit guide.
| Plan | Covers | Skips |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Grishneshwar, Ellora, Bibi Ka Maqbara | Ajanta, wider Jyotirlinga circuit |
| 3 days | Above, plus Ajanta and city sights | A relaxed pace on any single site |
| 3-Jyotirlinga circuit | Grishneshwar, Trimbakeshwar, Bhimashankar | Ajanta entirely, needs its own trip |
On a tight schedule or a business-trip add-on: the one-day plan, timed around Grishneshwar's lunch break
First-time visitors wanting the full World Heritage picture: three days, with Ajanta as its own day
Pilgrimage-focused travelers: consider the dedicated Jyotirlinga circuit instead of splitting attention across caves and temples
Traveling with elders: the one-day plan is more forgiving than trying to fit Ajanta into the same 24 hours
Basing yourself in CIDCO puts you closer to the airport and city sights, while Khuldabad sits nearer the Ellora–Grishneshwar side if that's your main focus. Our where to stay in Sambhajinagar guide breaks down both areas.
