Mahakal Lok is the 900-metre corridor from Nandi Dwar to the gates of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, and walking it is free. From Indore it is a 55 km drive of about an hour, so most Yatris see it on the morning of darshan. This guide covers timings, parking, the walk and how to fit it around the aarti.
Shri Mahakal Lok was dedicated on 11 October 2022 as the first phase of the temple's expansion. It runs about 900 metres along the Rudrasagar lake, from the arrival plaza to the old temple gates. The sandstone came from Rajasthan and the carving was done by craftsmen from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Odisha.
The numbers on the walk, as the tourism department lists them:
108 stambhs (pillars), each carved with a form or a dance pose of Shiva
192 statues, from the Saptarishis at the entrance to the Shiv Tandav group
53 murals telling the Shiv Purana, with a plaque under each
The two gates have names worth knowing. Nandi Dwar is the main entrance, with the bull facing the temple. Pinaki Dwar is named after Pinak, the bow that Vishwakarma made for Shiva. Yatris arriving from the Indore side come in through Nandi Dwar.
One episode made the news. In May 2023 a storm with 65 kmph winds toppled six of the seven 10-foot Saptarishi statues near the entrance. They were replaced, and the state later ordered stone versions carved by Odisha artists.
The corridor opens around 6 AM and takes its last visitors around 10 PM, before the temple's Shayan Aarti. There is no entry fee and no pass for the walk. Timings stretch on festival nights, and the gates close early only when the district administration restricts crowds.
The laser and light show on the Rudrasagar side runs for 25 minutes in the evening. It was free when it started and became a ₹100 per person ticket in July 2026. Show times move with sunset, so confirm the first show at the counter when you arrive.
From Indore the road is 55 km and takes 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi, longer in evening traffic. The main parking is the multilevel lot near the Triveni Museum at the Nandi Dwar end. Our guide on how to reach Ujjain from Indore compares road, train and bus.
| From Indore | Distance | Time | Where you get off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi | 55 km | about 1 hr 15 min | Mahakal Lok parking, Nandi Dwar |
| Train to Ujjain Junction | 55 km | 1 to 1.5 hrs | e-rickshaw to Nandi Dwar, about 2 km |
| Bus to Dewas Gate stand | 55 km | about 1.5 hrs | e-rickshaw to Nandi Dwar |
On Mondays and festival days the police stop cars well before the corridor. Then an e-rickshaw from the barricade is the only way in, and the walk from parking can be a kilometre by itself.
For elders there is an e-cart shuttle along the corridor. Reports differ on whether it is free or a nominal ₹20 for senior citizens, so ask at the help desk. Wheelchairs are reported free at the Gate 4 help desk.
Give the walk 45 minutes to an hour if you stop at the plaques. Start at Nandi Dwar and read the murals in order; they follow the Shiv Purana from creation to Tandav. The second half is the pillar avenue, with the temple shikhar at the end of it.
Carry: a water bottle, a cap in the afternoon, and the ID that matches your darshan pass.
Leave in the car: large bags and anything you will not take into the temple.
Shoes: stay on for the corridor and come off only at the temple shoe stand.
The corridor ends at the temple gates, where the free darshan line begins. On a normal weekday that line takes 1 to 3 hours to the sanctum view, much longer on Mondays and festivals. The ₹250 Shighra Darshan pass is the shorter queue; our Mahakal darshan timings and pass guide explains every slot.
The temple itself is open roughly 4 AM to 11 PM. Bhasma Aarti is 4 to 6 AM on a ₹200 online pass, and Sandhya Aarti moves to its winter time of about 6:30 PM in the last week of October. Mobile phones and bags go into lockers before the darshan gate, so finish your photographs in the corridor.
First visit, one day from Indore: leave at 6 AM, park at Triveni, walk the corridor at 7:30 and be in the darshan line by 8:15. Lunch in Ujjain, home by 3 PM.
With elderly parents: come on a weekday afternoon, use the e-cart, take the ₹250 pass. Our yatra with elderly parents guide covers the steps inside the temple.
For the lights: reach by 6 PM, walk at dusk, catch the laser show, sleep in Ujjain and take darshan at dawn.
Avoid: a Monday evening in November or December. Kartik Sawari and festival crowds fill the corridor wall to wall; the crowd calendar lists the dates.
If the corridor at night and Bhasma Aarti at 4 AM are both on your list, sleep in Ujjain within a kilometre of the temple. The 1 AM reporting for Bhasma Aarti is then a walk, not a 55 km drive. Rooms near the temple sell out about two weeks ahead for Mondays and festival dates.
For a plain day trip, stay in Indore near the Junction or on the Ujjain side of the city, which makes the 6 AM start easier.
Walk the 108 pillars slowly, and the darshan at the end of them feels earned. Har Har Mahadev.
