Yes, Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar fit comfortably into three days from Ahmedabad, and the easiest way in is through Indore. The overnight Shanti Express reaches Indore by dawn, IndiGo flies it in about 75 minutes, and from Indore both Jyotirlingas sit within 80 km. This plan gives you Bhasma Aarti on day two and Narmada darshan on day three.
Three ways work, and each changes how your first day looks.
Train 19309 Shanti Express: departs Ahmedabad Junction around 7:10 pm every day, passes Ujjain near 3:45 am and reaches Indore around 5:45 am. Roughly 10.5 hours.
Flight: IndiGo runs about two daily non-stops, Star Air one more. Flying time is about 1 hour 15 minutes, so a morning flight lands you by 9 am.
Road: about 390 to 400 km via Godhra and Dahod on NH47. Count on 7 to 8 hours with halts, which eats most of a day.
For most families the train wins. You sleep through the distance, arrive before the heat, and still have the whole day. The return 19310 leaves Indore at 11 pm and reaches Ahmedabad around 8:20 am, so day three can run until evening.
Indore sits between the two Jyotirlingas, which is why it works as the base. Ujjain is 55 km north, Omkareshwar about 80 km south, and the two temples are about 140 km apart.
| Leg | Distance | Road time |
|---|---|---|
| Indore station or airport to Ujjain | ~55 km | 1 to 1.5 hrs |
| Ujjain to Omkareshwar | ~140 km | 3 to 3.5 hrs |
| Omkareshwar to Indore | ~80 km | 2 to 2.5 hrs |
The order matters. Do Ujjain first because Bhasma Aarti is at 4 am and you want to be sleeping within walking distance of Mahakal the night before. Omkareshwar follows, and the drive back to Indore is the shortest leg, which is kind on the last day.
Our two-day Jyotirlinga itinerary from Indore shows the same loop compressed, if your leave is shorter.
Arrive Indore by train at dawn or by flight mid-morning. Your taxi takes you straight to Ujjain, where you check in near the temple and rest until noon.
Afternoon: general darshan at Mahakaleshwar. The temple is open from about 4 am to 11 pm. On ordinary weekdays the queue is 45 minutes to an hour.
Sheeghra darshan: a ₹250 ticket from Gate 4 cuts the wait on normal days. On the heaviest days the temple has halted the paid line, as it did on 13 October 2026, so do not count on it during festivals.
Evening: walk the Mahakal Lok corridor, then Kal Bhairav and Harsiddhi if energy allows. Sleep by 9 pm.
Carry a dhoti or saree for the morning. Men need a dhoti or sola and women a saree or salwar suit for Bhasma Aarti, and phones and leather items stay in the free lockers.
Report at the temple by 3 am with your pass and the ID you booked with. The aarti runs roughly 4 to 6 am. After it ends, most Yatris take a second, calmer darshan and breakfast near Mahakal Lok.
Leave Ujjain by 9 am. The road to Omkareshwar runs back past Indore and then south, about 3 to 3.5 hours in total. Reach by early afternoon and check in on the Omkareshwar side of the river.
Omkareshwar temple is open from about 5 am to about 9:30 pm.
Jalabhishek is allowed in the morning window; the afternoon is for darshan only.
The ₹300 Vishesh Darshan ticket is sold at the temple counter and online, but online booking is not available for Saturdays, Sundays or the same day.
Take evening darshan, then sit on the ghat for the Narmada aarti. Shayan Aarti is around 8:20 to 9 pm.
Start with Mangal Aarti at 5 am if you can. Then cross the bridge to Mamleshwar, about a kilometre away on the south bank. Many Yatris consider the Jyotirlinga incomplete without it.
If the family is fit, the 7 km Omkar Parvat parikrama takes about three hours. Elders can skip it and take the boat round instead. Lunch by 1 pm, then the 80 km drive to Indore. You have the evening free before the 11 pm train, or you can fly out from Indore airport.
Flying both ways compresses this to two nights, the same way our Mumbai and Pune weekend plan does.
With elderly parents: train in, taxi throughout, Sheeghra darshan at Mahakal, boat rather than parikrama at Omkareshwar. Add the Vishesh Darshan ticket at Omkareshwar on a weekday.
On a budget: sleeper class on 19309, dharamshala near Mahakal, bus from Indore to Omkareshwar. Expect to lose half a day to connections.
On a tight schedule: fly in on a Friday morning, Bhasma Aarti Saturday, Omkareshwar Saturday evening and Sunday morning, fly out Sunday night.
Avoid: driving from Ahmedabad in your own car on day one and attempting Bhasma Aarti the next morning. Nobody gets up at 3 am after 8 hours on NH47.
Sleep in Ujjain on night one, within a kilometre of Mahakaleshwar, so the 3 am walk is short. Night two is Omkareshwar, on the temple side of the Narmada, which saves crossing the bridge in the dark for Mangal Aarti.
Indore is for arrival or departure only. If your train lands at 5:45 am and your pass is for the following morning, a half-day room near Indore Junction lets everyone wash and rest before the Ujjain drive. Our guide on Mahakal darshan timings and the Bhasma Aarti pass covers the booking steps.
