Kartik Purnima falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the day Pushkar Mela ends with the Mahasnan in Pushkar lake and darshan at the Jagatpita Brahma Temple. From Jaipur it is about 145 km and 2.5–3 hours on NH48 through Ajmer. Here are the dates, snan window, temple timings and an honest answer on the same-day return.
The Government of Rajasthan event calendar lists Pushkar Fair 2026 as 17–24 November 2026, and Incredible India carries the same window. Rajasthan Tourism had not published the day-wise programme when we checked, so treat the opening days as provisional and Purnima as fixed.
The religious part is the five-day Kartik snan. It begins on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Friday 20 November (Vaishnava families keep it on the 21st) and ends with the Purnima dip, which the panchang calls the Mahasnan.
| Day | Date (2026) | What happens at Pushkar |
|---|---|---|
| Fair opening (as listed) | Tue 17 Nov | Cattle fair and cultural programme begin; the town fills with traders |
| Dev Uthani Ekadashi | Fri 20 Nov | Five-day Kartik snan opens; Panch Tirth yatra begins |
| Tulsi Vivah | Sat 21 Nov | Second snan day; evening deepdaan on the ghats |
| Purnima tithi begins | Mon 23 Nov, 11:42 pm IST | Dips start right after midnight |
| Kartik Purnima — Mahasnan | Tue 24 Nov | Tithi ends 8:23 pm IST; the fair closes with the full moon |
As with the Falgun mela at Khatu Shyam, the last day is the heaviest. Older reports put the religious-day crowd at three to five lakh; the ghats are full well before sunrise on the 24th.
Pushkar lake has 52 ghats. For Kartik snan most yatris use Brahma Ghat (closest to the temple), Varaha Ghat and Gau Ghat, which is also called Gandhi Ghat because Gandhiji's ashes were immersed there in 1948.
What the ghats expect of you:
Footwear comes off well before the water, roughly 9 m back; carry a cloth bag for your chappals.
Photographing bathers is not allowed; keep the phone away on the steps.
Carry a towel and a change of clothes; changing rooms are few and full on Purnima.
The steps are shallow but slippery; hold the railing and keep elders between two people.
The Jagatpita Brahma Temple is a short uphill walk from Brahma Ghat. Winter timings listed by Incredible India are 6:00 am–1:30 pm and 3:00 pm–8:30 pm; Mangala aarti is before sunrise, Sandhya aarti about 40 minutes after sunset. During the mela the temple reportedly opens an hour or more early, and the crush lasts until about noon.
Householders take darshan from outside the sanctum, so the line keeps moving. Do the snan first, then climb to the temple; the Varaha temple near Varaha Ghat is the traditional second stop.
The drive is about 145 km on NH48: Jaipur to Kishangarh on the six-lane toll expressway (about 90 km, toll plazas at Thikariya and Bardagawan-Kishangarh), then Ajmer and the 15 km hill road to Pushkar. Outside the mela it takes 2.5–3 hours.
In mela week the last 15 km change. In 2025 the Ajmer–Pushkar road ran one-way for all five snan days, Ekadashi to Purnima, the first time it was five days rather than two. The town itself closes to vehicles from about two days before Purnima, except the outermost road.
For a car from Jaipur:
Leave Jaipur by 4 am on Purnima to reach the parking before the rush; by 7 am the Ajmer approach crawls.
Your car stops at the perimeter parking, roughly 500 m to 2 km from the ghats; everyone walks from there.
From the afternoon before Purnima the Bazaar Road is one-way on foot; budget 20–30 minutes from parking to Brahma Ghat.
The 2026 traffic order was not out when we checked; your driver gets the final diversions at the Ajmer police posts.
There is no direct Jaipur–Pushkar train. Pushkar Terminus (PUHT) sits on a 26 km branch from Ajmer served by one passenger train five days a week. Trains therefore mean Jaipur to Ajmer Junction (AII), then road.
| Train | Departs | Arrives | Days | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12195 Agra Fort–Ajmer Intercity | Jaipur 10:25 | Ajmer 12:45 | Daily | Cheapest reserved seat |
| 12015 Ajmer Shatabdi | Jaipur 10:45 | Ajmer 12:50 | Daily | Chair car; dear for two hours |
| 09607 Ajmer–Pushkar passenger | Ajmer 09:30 | Pushkar 10:40 | Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun | Return 09608 leaves Pushkar 16:00 |
The problem: both morning trains reach Ajmer when the temple's morning slot is nearly over, and the Pushkar passenger has already left. From Ajmer the last leg is 15 km: an RSRTC bus for around ₹15, or a taxi to the mela parking.
Buses are the fallback. Over 400 buses a day run Jaipur–Ajmer (RSRTC from about ₹165, 2–3 hours), and RSRTC runs direct Jaipur–Pushkar services (about ₹120–160, 3.5 hours) to the Pushkar stand, roughly 2 km from the temple.
Yes, but only by private car and only if you leave Jaipur at 4 am. The timeline that works:
4:00 am leave Jaipur; reach the Pushkar perimeter parking by 6:30–7:00 am, before the Ajmer approach jams.
7:00–8:30 am walk in, snan at Brahma Ghat or Gau Ghat, change into dry clothes.
8:30–11:00 am Brahma Temple queue and darshan; Varaha temple on the way back.
11:30 am walk out, eat on the Ajmer side, leave by 1 pm.
4:00–5:00 pm back in Jaipur, ahead of the evening crowd leaving Pushkar.
By train it does not work: the 12195 reaches Ajmer at 12:45, the temple shuts at 1:30, and the evening slot leaves you chasing a late train home. If you want the Purnima deepdaan on the lake at dusk, book a bed.
Pushkar rooms in mela week are the dearest of the year, and the good ones go 2–3 months ahead. Ajmer, 15 km away, prices like a normal November, but you cross the one-way road at dawn with everyone else.
| Option | Fair-week rate (indicative) | To the ghats | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pushkar guesthouse or budget hotel | ₹2,500–5,500 | 5–15 min walk | Pre-dawn snan, elders |
| Pushkar mid-range hotel | ₹6,000–12,000 | 10–20 min walk | Families wanting a bath and rest |
| Swiss tents near the fairground | ₹8,000–15,000 | 20–30 min walk | The mela atmosphere |
| Ajmer 3-star near the station | ₹3,500–5,500 | 15 km by road | Budget, train arrivals |
Rates are from travel-trade guides and listings seen today, not a tariff card; confirm before you pay. One rule holds: if the dawn snan is the point of the trip, sleep inside Pushkar on the night of 23 November.
With elders: private taxi, leave Jaipur on 22 or 23 November, sleep in Pushkar within walking distance of Brahma Ghat; snan at first light, temple before 9 am.
On a budget: train 12195 to Ajmer on the 23rd, an Ajmer hotel, RSRTC bus to the mela parking at 5 am on Purnima; back by an evening train.
On a tight schedule: the 4 am taxi day trip above, home by 5 pm; skip the deepdaan.
First time, want the whole mela: arrive 22 November, bathe on the quieter Ekadashi-to-Trayodashi days, keep the dawn dip for Purnima.
Avoid: arriving in Pushkar between 9 am and 1 pm on the 24th by any mode. The approach road is slowest then, the temple closes at 1:30, and you get neither snan nor darshan properly.
Yatris who know our Khatu Shyam and Salasar Balaji plan from Jaipur will find Pushkar easier on the road and harder on foot. The same full moon brings the Somnath mela; that guide is for yatris starting in Gujarat.
Book by the ghat you plan to bathe at. Guesthouses around Brahma Ghat and the Varaha Ghat lanes put you five minutes from the water, which matters at 5 am in November cold. Hotels on the Ajmer road side mean a 20–30 minute walk through the one-way bazaar.
If Pushkar is full, Ajmer's hotels near the railway station are the practical second choice; your driver takes the one-way road before dawn. Skip tents far out on the fairground side unless the camel fair is your reason to come.
Reach the lake before the sun, and Jagatpita Brahma's darshan follows without a fight. Jai Brahma Dev.
