An evening at Mahakal from Indore is the easiest Jyotirlinga darshan after a working day: leave Indore at 3:30 pm, sit for Sandhya Aarti at 6:30 pm, walk the lit Mahakal Lok, stand for Shayan Aarti at 10:30 pm. The catch is the way back. The last train to Indore leaves Ujjain at 10:45 pm, before Shayan Aarti ends.
From Kartik, which begins around 27 October 2026 after Sharad Purnima, the temple switches to its Kartik–Phalgun timetable. The evening aartis move earlier than in summer, so a plan copied from a monsoon visit has you arriving after the lamps are lit.
| Evening ritual | Kartik–Phalgun (winter) | Chaitra–Ashwin (summer) |
|---|---|---|
| Sandhya Pooja | about 5:30–6:00 pm | about 5:00–5:30 pm |
| Sandhya Aarti | 6:30–7:15 pm | 7:00–7:45 pm |
| Shayan Aarti | 10:30–11:00 pm | 10:30–11:00 pm |
| Temple closes | about 11:00 pm | about 11:00 pm |
Travel guides disagree by about 15 minutes on the Sandhya slot, and the committee posts changes on its portal. Check the timetable on the morning you travel; only Shayan Aarti stays fixed all year.
Since February 2026 the temple committee sells a seated pass for both evening aartis at ₹250 per person. Booking is only on the official portal, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. There is no counter, and nobody at the gate can sell you one.
Sandhya Aarti: booking opens at 12:00 noon on the same day.
Shayan Aarti: booking opens at 4:00 pm on the same day.
Seats go first-come, first-served, and you carry the ID you booked with.
Pass holders enter through Gate 1. For Shayan Aarti, be there by about 10:00 pm.
Without a pass you still see the aarti. The free chalit (moving) darshan line keeps running through both aartis, so you pass the lamps rather than sit before them. Read our Mahakal timings and Bhasma Aarti pass guide for the morning equivalents.
Indore to Ujjain is about 55 km, and a taxi takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the traffic on the way out of the city. Work on the six-lane highway is still on. An August 2026 report promised a 40-minute run once it opens, but plan on the longer figure.
Leave Indore by 3:30 pm. That puts you at the Mahakal Lok parking by 5 pm, with time for the locker, the shoe stand and the walk to the gate before Sandhya Aarti. Our road, rail and bus guide for Indore to Ujjain has the full comparison.
Buy the ₹250 Shighra Darshan ticket for a close darshan before the aarti. On busy days it cuts a 3 to 5 hour queue to under an hour.
Sandhya Aarti ends around 7:15 pm and Shayan Aarti starts at 10:30 pm. Three hours is enough for the three evening sights that belong to the temple, all within about 2 km of the gate.
Shipra Aarti at Ram Ghat: held at about 6:30 pm for the last 11 years, so it overlaps Sandhya Aarti. Most Yatris choose Mahakal and walk to the ghat afterwards. In August 2026 the temple committee and the ghat priests disputed who conducts it, so ask locally whether it is on.
Mahakal Lok corridor: open till about 10:00 pm, lit after dark, and photography is allowed here, unlike inside the temple. The 8 to 9 pm hour has the best light and thinner crowds. Our Mahakal Lok walk guide maps the route.
Harsiddhi Mata temple: the Shakti Peeth beside Rudra Sagar, with two deepstambhs carrying 726 lamp holders. The evening aarti is around 7:00 pm. The lamps are lit on festival evenings and when a Yatri sponsors the lighting, so do not count on seeing them lit on an ordinary day.
Kal Bhairav is 5 km away and closes between 9 and 10 pm, so it fits before Sandhya Aarti, not after.
| Option | Leaves Ujjain | Reaches Indore | Works after |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranthambore Express (12466) | about 7:20 pm | about 9:05 pm | Sandhya Aarti only |
| Vande Bharat (20912), not on Monday | 10:45 pm | 11:50 pm | Sandhya Aarti and Mahakal Lok |
| Virbhumi Express (19315), Monday only | 11:55 pm | 1:35 am | Shayan Aarti, Monday only |
| Private taxi | when you walk out | about 1–1.5 hours later | Everything |
Train times are from aggregator timetables; confirm on IRCTC for your date. Ujjain Junction is about 2 km from the temple, a 10-minute auto ride.
The taxi is the only option that lets you stay for Shayan Aarti on six days of the week and be in your Indore bed by about 12:30 am. The driver waits through both aartis, so you leave on your own clock.
With elderly parents: book the ₹250 seated Sandhya Aarti pass at noon, skip Shayan Aarti, and return by taxi at 8 pm. Sitting beats a midnight drive.
On a budget: free chalit darshan during Sandhya Aarti, dinner near the corridor, the Vande Bharat home at 10:45 pm.
Want Shayan Aarti: book at 4 pm, enter Gate 1 by 10 pm, and have a taxi waiting at 11 pm. Avoid Mondays, when the Vande Bharat does not run and the temple is fullest.
Avoid: arriving after 6 pm in Kartik. The Sandhya Aarti lamps are already lit at 6:30 pm, and you will spend the aarti in the queue.
If Shayan Aarti is to be followed by Bhasma Aarti at 4 am, sleep in Ujjain. The temple's dharamshalas and the hotels around Mahakal Lok let you walk to the gate at 3 am. Our where to sleep each night guide compares Ujjain with Indore.
Landing late at Indore airport instead? See the late-night arrival plan.
Leave Indore by half past three and the whole evening falls into place, from the first lamp of Sandhya Aarti to the last of Shayan. Har Har Mahadev.
