Harsiddhi Mata is the Shakti Peeth most Mahakal Yatris walk past without going in. It stands about 600 m from the Jyotirlinga across Rudrasagar, roughly 55 km from Indore, with two 51-foot lamp pillars in its courtyard. This guide gives the darshan hours, both aartis, how the lamp lighting works and where it fits in a Mahakal day from Indore.
The temple opens for darshan at about 5:00 am. Morning aarti runs 7:00 to 8:00 am, and the evening aarti 6:00 to 7:00 pm; closing time is quoted anywhere between 7 and 9 pm by different guides, so treat 7 pm as the safe last entry and ask at the gate for the day's hour.
There is no ticket. Darshan is free, there is no paid fast lane, and on an ordinary weekday the queue through the sanctum takes 15 to 30 minutes. Weekends and Mahakal's Monday sawari days push that past an hour, because the same crowd walks across from the Jyotirlinga.
Inside, the sanctum holds a Shri Yantra, with Annapurna, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati worshipped alongside Harsiddhi. Photography is not allowed in the garbhagriha; the courtyard and pillars are fine.
The two pillars in the courtyard are about 51 feet tall and carry roughly 1,100 lamps between them; local reports put a full lighting at around 60 litres of oil. Tradition credits Emperor Vikramaditya with raising them, and the present temple structure dates from the Maratha period.
A devotee, usually in thanks for a fulfilled wish, sponsors the oil and wicks for both towers and the pujaris light them at the 6 pm aarti. Booking is through the temple office in person, and Ujjain papers report a waiting list of about three months. Only the temple staff climb; Yatris watch from the courtyard.
During Navratri the pillars are lit every night without a sponsor, and one guide lists Kartik Purnima among the lighting nights. A fire in one pillar this year broke several lamps, and the temple was reported to be lighting lamps at the base while repairs went on. Check with the office whether full lighting has resumed on your date.
Harsiddhi is counted as the 13th of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the spot where Sati's elbow fell. For Ujjain's own tradition it is the Mahakal Yatri's second stop, the goddess who guards the Jyotirlinga's western side.
The legend ties it to Vikramaditya, the king of Ujjain's calendar, who worshipped Harsiddhi as his family deity. The temple sits on the far side of Rudrasagar from Mahakal, about 600 m or a 10-minute walk, with the Mahakal Lok corridor running along the lake between the two.
Indore to Ujjain is about 55 km, around 1 hour 30 minutes by the Indore–Ujjain road. Our guide to reaching Ujjain from Indore has the road and train options; the question here is which end of the day to give Harsiddhi.
Evening plan (best): leave Indore by 2 pm, Mahakal darshan 3:30–5, walk to Harsiddhi for the 6 pm aarti, back in Indore by 9:30.
Bhasma aarti plan: after Mahakal's 4 am bhasma aarti (see our Mahakal timings and pass guide), reach Harsiddhi for the 7 am aarti; the courtyard is nearly empty.
Seven-temple day: Harsiddhi is the second stop in our Ujjain beyond Mahakal day plan, which adds Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath.
Parking for Harsiddhi is the same lot Yatris use for the Mahakal Lok side, so one stop covers both temples.
| Occasion | 2026–27 date | What changes at Harsiddhi |
|---|---|---|
| Kartik Purnima | Tue 24 Nov 2026 | Lamp lighting reported; Shipra ghats full from the afternoon |
| Chaitra Navratri | Spring 2027, nine nights | Pillars lit every night; sanctum queue over an hour |
| Mahakal Monday sawari (Kartik–Agahan) | Mondays to early Dec 2026 | Crowd walks across after the procession; evening aarti packed |
| Ordinary weekday | — | 15–30 minute darshan; lighting only if sponsored |
If the lamps are the point of your visit, a sponsored weekday evening beats a festival night: the pillars burn the same, and you can stand close enough to feel the heat instead of watching over a thousand heads.
With elders: the evening plan. The courtyard is flat, the walk from the Mahakal Lok parking is short, and the 6 pm aarti means no 3 am start.
On a budget: darshan is free at Harsiddhi and the walk from Mahakal costs nothing; the only spend is the drive from Indore.
On a tight schedule: the bhasma aarti plan puts Mahakal and Harsiddhi both behind you by 8 am and the car back in Indore by 10.
Avoid: arriving at 7:15 pm expecting the lamps, and Monday sawari evenings in November if you want a quiet darshan.
Most Indore Yatris go home the same night, and the 55 km drive makes that easy. If you stay, a room on the Harsiddhi side of Rudrasagar puts both the 7 am Harsiddhi aarti and Mahakal within a 10-minute walk, which is the only way to do the lamp aarti and the bhasma aarti without a 2 am drive.
Mahakal guards the city and Harsiddhi guards Mahakal. Jai Mata Di.
